Title: Ordering a a Next Gen Oasis? Whatcha gonna call it?
Post by: Ann in Arlington on October 13, 2017, 10:45:18 AM
Amazon isn't very creative; they'll give it a name like <your name's><nth>Kindle.

Is anyone going to change it to anything more meaningful, useful, helpful, or more readily identifiable?

Yeah, mine says 10th kindle right now.  ;D

I'll name it when it gets here. Something gaelic or such thing. They all have such names now.  8)

I don't know for sure, but I think I pleaded my case sufficiently to DH that a new Kindle will be headed my way for Christmas. ;D

I'm likely to choose something that connects it to the song, Midnight at the Oasis, as that has run through my head every time we discuss them since the original Oasis was released.  So, "Midnight", "Mr. Camel", "The Sheik" (being an HR fan, this name is calling to me already) are all possibilities!

My current Oasis is called Macrath. I also have a Seathan, Lachlann, Sebastian, Rourke, Faelen, Dageus, MacIain, Iain...........

I think I need a Derek Craven.  ;D. I'll know when I look it in the eye, um screen.  :P

Since it's waterproof, the first thing I thought of was Nautilus from Jules Verne . . . .  But my Voyage is already called that. Any other literary submarines anyone can think of?

;D

There's also "Yellow" which isn't exactly a literary submarine, but it is musical. :)

And then there's Red October. . . . . .

You could always go with Greek or Roman mythology--Poseidon or Neptune?

Good thoughts! Lots of other mythologies to look at as well . . . . thanks!

Hmmm.... My white PW3's name is Fang (White Fang) and my Voyage is Trixie. I'm not sure about my O2. :) I might have to ponder this awhile.

It bugs me that Amazon uses the same product name for different products.

I've been naming my most recent kindles after people in my family who have died. Might have to change one of the others to another name so I can call this one Paul, Russ or Eleanor.  Maybe I'll call it Harold after my great uncle, a wonderful man (we lived in his house) who passed in 1983. Or Wilbur after my father.

Gee, I never thought about giving my Kindles a name. I just went into my account to check my device names. I've only given them generic names like Roseann's 3G Kindle (my Voyage), Roseann's Fire and Roseann's Oasis. Not very creative...I'm going to have to come up with something a little more creative for the O2...this is something fun to think about while I await its arrival. :D

Since I can never remember when I bought mine I usually call them something like Brian's 2016 Paperwhite. Works for me. :)

I'm always intrigued by people's need to name inanimate objects, like cars for example, and by the names they come up with.

I've got quite a few Kindles, I think if I named them, I'd probably forget which one was which - likewise if I left them as Linda's 4th Kindle etc. So I just change mine to whatever model they are, like PW2, Voyage, Fire HD 10 etc. That way I know exactly which one I'm sending stuff to.

I recognise that that's probably boring - but hey, it works for me!  ;D

I don't think I ever named a car. Well one I kept calling POS. But that was because I had to catch the steering fluid in a small bucket under the car every time I parked and had to pour it back in before driving again. And it had leaky T-tops. Among other things.

Kindles are the only thing I name. I don't know why.  ;D

I've not named inanimate objects until Kindles and GPS systems in the car.  With my original Kindle (when it was the only one on the account) it was fun to pair it with the "Send to ..." when buying a book by calling it Radar O'Reilly's Hometown ;D With additional Kindles it became just further personalization of multiple Kindles on one account.

They could still be "son's name paperwhite", "husband's name paperwhite", etc., but we all kind of think of them as our personal librarians, so they get their own names instead.  Same thing with GPS system in the car, "Gertrude" talks to me in her obnoxious voice, "recalculating..." so I really needed a name to use when I talk back to her.  :P

Gertrude  ;D. I knew a few of those back in the day. Minus the "e" though, Gertrud.

I never used a GPS. They wouldn't work for me as I refuse to drive on highways. So I have to do it old school, print out google maps and write down lane left, turn right at CVS, stay in left lane, etc. As I live in San Antonio, pretty big city and anyone that knows it, we have 2 rings around our city. 410 and 1604. So in theory everyone that drives here at some point has to go on one of them to get around. I will not. So I have to drive backways. Which can be quite interesting.  :-X. But GPS stuff always uses the highways, even if you tell it like google maps not to use highways, then they'll use the side roads along the highways. I don't like those either much. Especially when they split from one to the other and suddenly there are like 8 lanes, 5 flying overhead and another few coming in sideways.  :o

I have to know which lane to be in long before the GPS tells one to get in. My husband has one so I know how they act. I'd never be able to make it. Crossing lanes in super traffic. People here are all me me me.

I miss the Autobahn. There was order and it didn't matter to me how fast I went.

I don't name inanimate objects in most cases. But with Kindles, I needed a way to know which was which. And the name has to be connected, somehow, to which device, or else I won't remember that either. :P But, like, the one that is my husband's is called "Ed's kindle". :) I never did come up with a good name for the first Oasis so it's just called Oasis. Really, right now, it's only my Voyage which has another name: Nautilus.

Oh, yeah! I remember there was a whole thread with creative names to call the kindle for the "Send to"

Send to. . . .

The Back of Beyond
Left Field
Outer Space
The Deep Blue Sea

etc.

I don't feel a need to name mine, but Amazon names them and I see that name on it, so might as well give it a better name.

My current Oasis is called Artfool Ei. I changed the new one to Ei 11:11 (That’s my angel numbers) but will probably stick with Artfool Ei

I’m not very creative.  I named my current Oasis Darla’s Oasis and the new one Darla’s New Oasis.

Thought of Serenity but currently it is names Oasis7 as the screen size was my motivating factor in ordering it.

I just named my new Oasis (coming tomorrow) Paul after my late brother. Had to rename my fire KDX 8.9" from Paul to Wilbur.

I have come up with names for my Kindles. My Voyage is Spok (to boldly go...), my Oasis 1 is Scout (after my favorite literary character) and my new Oasis will be dubbed Sheldon (because being the latest and greatest he knows everything!).  :D

I changed the name of my PW to Soon Come, a Jamaican phrase, because I won't be using it as much. My new Oasis is now Wondrous Oblivion, after a movie I really liked and how I feel when reading.

I just named her MOAB, for "Mother of all books".  She's big and beautiful and shiny, and I love her.  I'll love her even more when she has a nice case to keep her warm and snuggly.

Charon or Kharon is the ferryman of Hades.  Being waterproof a reference to something having to do with boats and water seems appropriate.  Could also be Jason or Argo for Jason and the Argonauts.  Cannot get much more classical than references to Greek legendary stories.
