Writers' Cafe / Re: Is Nook worth it anymore?
« on: February 02, 2017, 07:37:16 AM »
Nook sales are steady for me.  Not large, but steady. It's worth it for the few minutes it takes to publish there.

Curious about the connection here, as I used expanded distribution but rarely get a sale through it. Why did expanded distribution effect your Amazon sales? Your Amazon price doesn't change when you add expanded distribution, does it?

The minimum price you can charge goes up when you enable expanded distribution.  I dropped out of this and lowered my print costs, immediately stimulating sales.  I can still offer a 40% discount to bookstores and drop ship direct from CreateSpace, but my books are no longer available through expanded distribution - which was only netting me about $500 a year anyway.  I did more than that in additional sales the first month on Amazon when I lowered the price.

I have set up several book stores, as well as two chains in Asia, with returns on CreateSpace published titles.

They have a contract with my publishing company. They order through me. I drop ship from CreateSpace. They can return my books (covers only) within 90 days if they wish.

I've not done this with any US based chains yet, only independent stores.

In 3 years I've not had any returns, and sales are slow, but steady.  I did this because expanded distribution through CreateSpace resulted in such a small profit for a reasonably priced title to make it not worth doing, and I had no desire to use Lightning Source/Ingram directly.

Just FYI

Writers' Cafe / Re: Help! My Amazon ads are slowing down
« on: January 24, 2017, 08:53:50 AM »
Mine have all died, after running at 300-400% ROI for months. My daily total is up, but not remotely consumed. Bids are high - much higher than they were before - and not being used. Impressions are way down and of course clicks too...

I think it's broken.

I can't get them to even take my money any more for sponsored product ads.

Writers' Cafe / Re: How long is too long for a novel?
« on: January 19, 2017, 07:33:29 AM »
Mine are typically 160-180k words. Epic fantasy.

One of them is 270k words. It's really too long logistically but the readers love it.

My novella is 38k words...

Novel length is genre dependent as well.

Your Admin Team / Any way to block posts from a specific user?

Is there any way to block posts from a specific user that I just don't care to see all the time?

Don't chase them. Don't worry about them. Just keep building your lists. Unsubscribe are normal and you cannot control them.

Writers' Cafe / Nook Press interface is broken? Changing?
« on: January 12, 2017, 02:19:31 PM »
Is anyone else having problems with the Nook Press website?

Seems there is a new interface in place, and all my books have disappeared along with their sales data...

Writers' Cafe / Re: Google Play price matching?
« on: January 07, 2017, 01:07:41 PM »
I have another question about Google Play.

GP has linked my book to another author's book. So, when I find my book's listing on GP, there's a prompt over on the right of the screen "More from Author", except that's not my book they're advertising. And when I click on my name, it shows my book and this other author's book. Is there any way to fix this? I know how to fix this problem on Amazon and on Goodreads (make author profile, claim titles), but no idea how to Google Play.

*I am using StreetLib as my distributor to GP.
*My book just went live there in the last 24 hours.
*This is just my first book that is going wide. More will follow so I want to get this sorted now before it is a bigger problem :)

StreetLib will have to contact them on your behalf and correct this.

Writers' Cafe / Re: Why won't Amazon price match to free?

They won't care about Inktera, Overdrive or Smashwords. They do care about iTunes.

You should ask them nicely however and not simply report a lower price.

AMS doesn't post sales data for 3 days, so ...

I just can't legitimately say I don't do other things in my office space. It's in my home and we wander in there all the time. Heck, I journal at my desk when I'm feeling antsy and stare out the window thinking about what to buy friends for Christmas.

Then there's the time I watched a whole bunch of Castle DVDs on my computer as a way to avoid the open document hiding behind the video.

If I thought for a moment I didn't use the space for personal stuff, I'd deduct it in a heartbeat. But I just can't say that and not be lying at least a little bit.
Business use does not have to be exclusive, only primary.

I won't harp on it, but I will say again if you have an accountant who is telling you NOT to take a deduction you are legally allowed, you seriously should be talking to another accountant.  I will take every legal deduction - that's why they exist after all - and expect my accountant to tell me what I'm forgetting to take, not to tell me not to take something I'm allowed.

I've have run a number of side businesses as well as been self-employed in the last 40 years, and have no fear of the IRS.  They have a set of rules they follow, and they are clearly published. Hire the right professional help and do the right thing for record keeping and even an audit is not an issue.

Do what you are comfortable with, but don't operate out of fear and simply give the government more than they are due.

Enjoy tax season.

My CPA refuses to deduct my office. He says that is an automatic IRS audit.

Change accountants.

Seriously.  Home offices are perfectly legal deductions and your accountant should not be afraid of you taking your legal deductions.

I've taken a home office deduction for more than 25 years and NEVER had an audit as a result.

Writers' Cafe / Re: Facebook blocked my author pen name account
« on: January 06, 2017, 06:35:25 AM »
Elizabeth Ann West has it exactly right.

Though anecdotally, people "get away with it," the Facebook TOS says you will only create an account with the name that everyone calls you. It doesn't have to be your real name, but it would have to be the name you were known by.

So. My real name might be Bartholomew, but everyone calls me Fred. I could have a Facebook account called "Fred" but I could not have an account called "Jessip."

Your Author Page is a page.

No, you cannot Join anything from a Page, but this is where we need to push Facebook, so that Author Pages have more interactive capabilities and not to support fake accounts.

The dog and cat accounts do get caught regularly and removed, though there are certainly plenty of them still out there and I am actually pleased that Facebook doesn't make this removal their highest priority...

Put up another credit card, they will usually bill that immediately.

Writers' Cafe / Re: $9.99 Fiction eBooks

Ive bought a dozen eBooks priced at $9.99 or higher.  All non-fiction.  I would really have to love an author and be committed to a series to spend that on fiction.

Writers' Cafe / Re: Some Perspective on the Trad/Self Gulf
« on: January 05, 2017, 06:32:21 AM »
What is the point of having a traditional publisher if authors feel like they have to hire their own separate proof readers?

Not all trade publishers are created equal.

Just like not all deals will make the author any money, not all publishers will do what it takes to make the author successful.

There are plenty of stories - and not the exception - of people getting their rights back and changing from trade to self published before actually being successful.

No one cares more about your success than you do, and that applies to anyone - trade or self published.

A few people mentioned that they used the 'automatic' keyword targeting (keywords determined by amazon) and then used these keywords to get ideas for manual targeting.

I tried this, but I can't find the keywords that amazon is using in my 'automatic targeting' campaign. The keywords tab that I have on the manual campaigns does not exist on the automatic campaign. Where did you all find the keywords amazon uses?
I don't believe you can see the keywords in automatic placement.

I like the Google store, but the thing about it that earns my eternal enmity is their idiotic (and occasionally random) discounting.  Also, how hard would it truly be for them to put an extra box in their author section letting us know "Your price" vs "Customer price" before we hit publish?
I've never seen their discounting change, so just entering the elevated price always works for me.
