Let's Talk Kindle! / Only Military Time Available on Device (Oasis 2017)?
« on: January 21, 2018, 11:18:46 AM »
I've looked through the threads here and in Tips & Troubleshooting, I've searched through my User Guide, and I have looked through all the Settings options I can find on the device, but have found no option to return it to Standard Time (which I really thought it had until looking at the time late yesterday).

I understand Military Time, I can translate it in my head, but it is certainly not my preference.  All of my other devices allow me to show a.m. and p.m. with Standard Time.  Am I missing something or do I just need to deal with it?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Additional Apple Settlement Credits Being Applied!!
« on: October 18, 2017, 09:25:17 AM »
I was visiting with my sister this morning and she was excited to receive an e-mail from Amazon that she had an additional $2.86 credit from the Apple e-book Settlement that eligible people received over a year ago for purchases made in 2010-2012.  This one expires April 20, 2018.

Anyway, I quick checked my e-mail and didn't have a letter yet, so I went to the previous settlement page on Amazon to check and I have an additional $69.08 in credit. WooHoo!!  Below is a link that should take you to your settlement page if you haven't gotten the e-mail yet.

Anything Else Amazon / Amazon Discussion Forums Closing
« on: October 02, 2017, 11:00:44 AM »
There is a banner flashing in and out on various visits to Amazon this morning, so I don't think it has propagated to all the servers yet.  This is what I was able to copy the last time I saw it:

"The Amazon forums are retiring October 6, 2017.
Amazon would like to thank the members of this community for contributing to the discussion forums. As we grow and evolve, we encourage you to explore Goodreads Groups for books and Spark for other ways to engage with your interests."

I'm not overly surprised as they have been removing various functionality tools over the last few months.  Hopefully we will see a surge in new KBoards' members still wanting to talk about books and bargains.

Just in case anyone here still has credit from the 2016 e-book settlement (*giggle* *snort* *guffaw*), the credits do expire this coming Saturday, June 24, 2017.  I believe the link below will take you to your settlement page to check whether you still have a balance.  I think my fairly healthy balance was gone in about 2 weeks!

I maybe should have posted this in Anything Else Amazon since it applies to all product reviews, not just books, but I think it's particularly important to book reviews so chose the Book Corner.

It would be nice if someone with screenshot posting skills would show what comes up now when you get to the write a review box.  I don't think this is beta testing, I think it has been changed for everyone.

There is also a dropdown link at the bottom of the review box with review tips "things to consider" when writing a review which seem to be good general guidelines to me.

Hopefully this will eliminate some/most of the "Great", "Haven't read it yet", etc. reviews that show up when some folks think they have to respond after receiving an Amazon review prompt.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Voyage Problem, Could Ember Bold be to Blame?
« on: March 03, 2017, 04:03:16 PM »
My Voyage has served me faithfully since October 2014, heavy use but well cared for.  No problems whatsoever.

Sometime in the last couple of weeks I finally got the over-the-wifi update from last year that gave me the Ember Bold font option and I am at  I switched to it and my lousy eyesight appreciated the extra bold font so have left it there since.  I also have every-page refresh set as I have since my first Kindle in 2008. So far, so good.

Last night while reading V'ger decided to reset herself for no apparent reason. When the boy-under-the-tree screen came up, my screen looked like it had been dusted with glitter, particularly obvious in the all black sections of the restart screen.  Literally dozens of "pinholes" are now across my screen that I don't believe were there before she reset herself.

I haven't yet but will contact CS before ordering another Voyage even though this one is obviously out of warranty.  It is still readable in the meantime.  My question for the KB Kindle gurus is this - do you think the "extra" e-ink of using a permanently bold font plus the every page redraw of the pixels makes pinholes more likely to occur?  Does that work the e-ink process too hard and the magnetism or however it technically works is more likely to fail creating all these little spots where the e-ink will no longer adhere?

One screen "failure" out of 1 original Kindle, 2 Paperwhites, 1 Kindle Keyboard, 1 Basic, and 1 Voyage over almost ten years is not too bad of a record, but I'd like to avoid it in the future if permanently using a bold font could be the cause.

Anything Else Amazon / Add-on Items
« on: November 27, 2016, 12:33:51 PM »
Is there an easy way to check on add-on items when you have a qualifying order?  I wish (and have sent feedback to Amazon) that part of the checkout process included a pop-up or reminder that you have a qualifying order to get add-on items.

I don't do it often enough that I just "remember" to check on add-ons.  I think I would use the option more if there is an easy way to check what is available when I do order enough stuff to begin with.  Aren't grocery items frequently available as add-ons? Am I missing a drop-down or search function specifically for add-on available items?

Am I correct that you can have multiple add-on items in a single order if the initial order qualifies?  I did finally remember on my last of 8 separate orders over the last 3 days (any one of which would have met the requirement) when a Nerf gun I was looking at was only available as an add-on.  I then added that, some Barbie clothes, and a 10-pack of capacitive touch styli (only $2.36 for all 10, pretty colors!).

I already have the email that all 9 items on that order will be here on Wednesday, so I guess I answered my own question about multiple add-ons in one order.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Using A Stylus With a Touchscreen E-ink Kindle?
« on: November 22, 2016, 08:14:37 AM »
I have a hard time moving up and down a page when there is a touch bar within a menu instead of a page turn (same thing in the Kindle Store from the Kindle), I think because dry hands/fingers don't register the touch.  Does anyone use a stylus and does that work well/better?  Is there a specific type of stylus I should try?

I posted this comment and question in the update thread, but haven't received any responses so thought I would try a new topic.

There is no problem with my Voyage, DH and DS have no problem manipulating the screen, it's just me :P  Most of the time I don't have a problem when only a tap is required, it's just scrolling/swiping or fat fingers trying to get specific letters/numbers when using the onscreen keyboard.

Suggestions, Comments / Changes in the KBoard's Header?
« on: September 30, 2016, 04:20:29 PM »
Obviously the header and dropdown menus changed today.  I'm not one to go clicking around on new icons until I know where they are going to take me.

Are the circles on the right what are going to get us to PMs and into chat?  Messages are still available from a dropdown under My KBoards, but I don't see an indicator anymore that we have unread messages waiting?

The Book Corner / July 2016 Kindle First
« on: July 01, 2016, 06:38:04 PM »

We get to choose one of six books from Kindle First this month.  After several months of not being interested in any of the offerings, I am trying to decide between the Contemporary Fiction, Historical Fiction or Legal Thriller.  I am leaning toward the Historical Fiction, I think.

I know we have quite a few Nero Wolfe fans here who were quite excited as the Rex Stout books started being enkindled in 2010 and Gertie started this thread:,21461.msg401395.html#msg401395

Since then I think all of the Rex Stout Nero Wolfe books and novellas have come to Kindle and I continue to add them to my Kindle when there are sales or I feel like splurging for full price (I'll still never get rid of my paperback copies, some of which were found after many years of searching in used book stores).

What do the other Wolfe fans think of Robert Goldsborough's novels?  Have you continued your love of Nero and Archie with Goldsborough? Personally, I think his voice is pretty darn spot on for Rex Stout.  I was disappointed in the last two releases which seemed more dated to me than the others and the plots a little thin.  I didn't think Archie acted like Archie in "Archie in the Crosshairs".

While browsing Amazon this morning I discovered Goldsborough released a new Wolfe book in March.

Reviews seem to indicate our beloved Archie and Nero are back in true form in the latest release!  I haven't broken down to the $9.99 price yet, but am likely to splurge soon.

Suggestions, Comments / Randomly Being Logged Out?
« on: April 25, 2016, 12:07:06 PM »
Just checking to see if this is happening to anyone else.  Even though I am logged in "Forever", multiple times in the last 3 days I have been randomly logged out after reading a thread and using the "Go To" to refresh the forum page I am on or to jump to another forum within KB.  The reason I notice it when the page refreshes is because there are no longer "new" icons and when I check the top, I am a Guest.

It is easy enough to log back in and then everything is fine, but I thought I would mention it anyway.  It is happening in different browsers as well and it's not something I have encountered since joining in 2009.  Maybe the gods are trying to tell me I spend too much time on KB!

Anyone received official word of this announcement yet?  It says we will no longer be able to download books from the Cloud to older e-readers from the K1 through the Paperwhite 1st generation unless we get or manually download this update.

My Kindle Keyboard is with my MIL in Florida until the middle of April and while I tried to explain and write down directions for her, I'm not sure she knows how to connect to the community Wi-Fi there.  I presume she isn't downloading any new books if she hasn't figured out how to connect to a new wi-fi anyway, but guess I'll have to wait to update it for her when she gets home.

Anything Else Amazon / Talk to me about Prime and "Two-day Shipping"
« on: December 22, 2015, 06:22:00 PM »
I have been an Amazon Prime member for almost a year now.  I really have no complaints, but didn't have any luck looking for an explanation or FAQ section on Amazon about the free two day shipping benefit.

I ordered a puzzle this morning, 3rd party seller but fulfilled by Amazon, prime eligible, listed 'in stock', and I bought it with one-click.  The order listing says two-day shipping, but an arrival date of Wednesday, December 30th.  Is that something you would question (by calling CS)?  I don't need it by a specific date, it isn't a gift, but I am disappointed it will take over a week to arrive when the only non-business day in there is this Friday and Sunday.

Those of you who have been longer term Prime members, is the 2-day shipping from whatever date it eventually ships, not from order date?

Suggestions, Comments / "Intenal Error" in Header for Chat
« on: November 16, 2015, 06:12:47 PM »
ACK!!!  Can't get into chat.   :(

What's an "Intenal Error"?  The server doesn't use spell check?  ;)

Let's Talk Kindle! / New way to purchase books in a series at Amazon!
« on: December 04, 2014, 12:56:19 PM »
There is a thread in the Writer's Cafe about a book series being "involuntarily bundled" by Amazon.  When I went to check the link, it takes me to a series page instead of an individual book link page where you can buy the complete series of individual books with one click!  It isn't a sale price, it is the price of all the books individually!  I have seen book bundles the author creates before, but I have never seen the buy individual books in a series all at one time before.

Because I already owned 2 books in the series, above my one-click-to-buy button, I told me I could purchase the remaining 3 books for $5.98.  I one-clicked, got a thank you for 3 purchases in one, and watched the 3 books download individually to my Kindle.

I love this!  I hope if this is in a testing phase, that it is something Amazon keeps for books in a series.  If I go back to that same link now, it tells me I already own all the books in this series.  8)

eta:  Maybe this belongs in the Book Corner instead.  Mods please move it if you think it should be.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Tips on Cloud Searching?
« on: November 15, 2014, 05:58:02 PM »
I've read the Voyage User Guide, I've played around with my device, but I'm not coming up with an answer for how to search within the Cloud if I'm not really sure what I am looking for.

When we had the "Content Manager" on the K1, and then the "Archives" on the K2-KK, I could search, for example, for all books beginning with the letter M or authors whose last name starts with B and then page through until I found the author whose full name I couldn't remember or the title I only sort of remembered.  Now if I go to the cloud and type just M into the search while having it set to "author", I get 250 pages of results for first names beginning with M and even then all of one author name are not listed together.  I might have Mike Hicks on page 1 and then a different Mike Hicks book on page 9.  Maybe at some point in those 250 pages it switches to last names or a different letter, but I haven't looked that far.

What am I doing wrong?  How do I search for a book or an author if I'm pretty sure it starts with a certain letter but don't remember a whole name?  ???

Let's Talk Kindle! / New Message on e-book Pre-orders?
« on: October 16, 2014, 07:31:55 AM »
Maybe it has just been a while since I pre-ordered a Kindle book and everybody else has already seen this, but it is the first time I recall seeing a "why?" link on the confirmation e-mail beside the price which said "6.99 or less".  When I clicked the link, I got this Amazon message:

"'s price for not-yet-released items sometimes changes between the time the item is listed for sale and the time it is released and/or shipped.

• For Physical Items:
Whenever you pre-order a physical item displaying the “Pre-order Price Guarantee” message on the product detail page, the price we charge when we ship it to you will be the lowest price offered by between the time you placed your order and the end of the day of the release date.
• For Games & Software Downloads, Kindle Books, and Amazon Music:
Whenever you pre-order digital content, the price we charge you will be the lowest price offered by between the time you placed your order and the time the content is released."

I think most of us were aware that Amazon guarantees the lowest price on pre-orders, but it was nice to see a confirmation of the policy as it relates to e-book pre-orders.  I know there have been some who cancelled and re-ordered when they saw a price drop on a pre-ordered book before release just to make sure they got the lowest price.  This confirms that is not necessary!

Have I mentioned lately how much I love Amazon?  :)

Suggestions, Comments / Will someone explain the Buddy List to me?
« on: October 06, 2014, 04:54:57 PM »
I realize I could just add some names to my "Buddy List" and see what happens, but I'd rather have some idea first what its advantages might be.  I know how the ignore list works...

Suggestions, Comments / Chat links broken?
« on: June 12, 2014, 07:38:20 PM »
I see the word "chat" right above the home button in the headers is now a live link.  As of 9:30 Central time, neither that link nor the dropdown from Social is accessing Chat.  :'(

Last night I went to the last page of my Home screens to open my next read (currently using a Kindle Keyboard).  This is how I choose my next read 99% of the time.  However, this time the last item on my Home pages is "Archived Items (2,055)" and it is clickable!  I don't have to use the menu to "View Archived Items", I can get there from my Home pages.

It doesn't really save a step because I still have to get to the last page (it doesn't move to the first page after you open it from there), but you don't have to click the menu and then click down to View Archived Items.  I have honestly never noticed it before.  Has it been there all along?

Here's the story.  I have a 3-year old grandson who visits and stays with me frequently.  Whenever he leaves my house, we have a good-bye litany that started with "See you later, alligator" and "After while, crocodile".  He came up with and added, "See you soon, you big baboon!" and I added "After dark, aardvark".

Now I am hearing "More, G-ma!", but I am not coming up with other silly little good-bye animal rhymes to add.

I know all you witty folks can come up new ideas for me.  He knows pretty much any animal there is, so the field is wide open.

Rhyme away!  ;D

Not Quite Kindle / Classical Pianist Van Cliburn, RIP
« on: February 27, 2013, 12:42:16 PM »
"Van Cliburn, the internationally celebrated pianist whose triumph at a 1958 Moscow competition helped thaw the Cold War and launched a spectacular career that made him the rare classical musician to enjoy rock star status, died Wednesday after a fight with bone cancer. He was 78."

:'(  He was magnificent.  He won that competition before I was born, but my parents listened to him all the time.  Thank goodness his genius will remain available to us forever.

Suggestions, Comments / Can Anyone Confirm How "on-line" Status Works?
« on: October 13, 2012, 11:18:37 AM »
My understanding is that even if I have my log-in set to "forever", after 90 minutes of inactivity I would show as "off-line".  Is that true or can someone always show as on-line even if they haven't been here in a long time?

Under our profiles there is a specific date and time of "last active".  How is that determined?  Just moving around reading posts?  Actually posting?

I'm just curious as to whether the last active and on-line status of profiles and avatars in past posts is a way to know if a member is truly here in a given timeframe even if they are lurking.

Not Quite Kindle / Andy Williams Has Died
« on: September 26, 2012, 07:40:23 AM »
I can't get the link from Drudge Report to work today, but singer Andy Williams has died this morning at the age of 84 after a long battle with bladder cancer.   :'(

Moon River is one of my all-time favorite songs.
