Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / OSX El Capitain install found
« on: September 30, 2015, 11:53:53 AM »
I still don't know exactly where it is located on the App Store, but about 2:10 PM EST I found an article on saying that it had officially been released and containing a link to click to start the download.

I Opened the article up in Safari on my Mac Mini and clicked the link. It switched to a page on the App Store describing El Capitain and I clicked the download link around 2:12 EST.

The download started and was a little over 6 GB. It finished around 2:24 and brought up the Install screen. By 2:26 I had closed all the other programs I had running and the first boot started.

It is now around 2:53 and the screen says there is 7 minutes remaining.

Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / Watch OS2 and iOS9 available?
« on: September 16, 2015, 10:02:38 AM »
Both Watch OS2 and iOS9 are supposed to be available for download at 1PM EST on September 16th.

I plan to try to install both today and will try to keep you updated.

At some time in the past, I started to read and listen to The Kill Artist and then got interrupted. It was long enough ago that I want to start over again at the beginning.

I have tried opening the audio book and then going to location 1. After that I opened the Kindle book and then going to location 1.

If I then press the play arrow at the bottom of the Kindle book, the audio starts up somewhere in chapter 41.

How do I set the furthest page read to 1 a cross all my devices so they are back in sync?

Fire Talk / Oberon Design Now has Covers Available for the Fire HDX 8.9
« on: December 03, 2013, 05:07:33 PM »
I have been checking almost every day since I received my Fire HDX 8.9.

Today I finally found that they are available.

The covers are not cheap. The one I ordered is $132, but the ones I have ordered for my previous kindles were all such works of art, that I think they are well worth the price.

I received my Fire HDX 8.9 just after 2 PM EST.

After plugging it in and powering it up, it took around 45 minutes before it had downloaded and installed all updates.

It then took me about another hour to get everything configured the way I thought it should be.

At that point, I tried to open one of my previously purchased books for immersion reading.

After the audio portion was downloaded, I pressed the Play button and the narration began.

However, there was no corresponding highlight following the text as it was being read.

I searched around in the various Settings and set up other apps for about another 2 hours, but when I tried immersion reading again there was still no highlight, so I decided to try the Mayday Button.

The gentleman who answered the request was vary polite and tried multiple settings, but the problem was not solved when the Mayday window was closed.

At that point, I started to change back to the Sepia background that I prefer while the narration was still playing.

Just as I pushed the Back arrow to apply the changes, I noticed that the highlight had started to appear. However, when it changed to Sepia, I had lost the highlight again.

I am not sure what I did next, but I got kicked back to the Carousel while the narrative continued to play.

When I pressed the book in the Carousel to return to it, it opened up and the narrative continued to play with the highlight now showing.

Fire Talk / Dropbox and 1Password Reader for Fire?
« on: November 07, 2013, 03:35:38 PM »
I started trying to download the apps I had previously purchased for my Fire HD 8.9 to the Fire HDX 8.9.

So far I have found two important ones that do not seem to be compatible.

1. DropBox
2. 1Password Reader

As long as a WiFi connection is available, I can find my DropBox contents using Silk, but without the DropBox app I won't be able to access them with WiFi.

Fire Talk / HDX 8.9 Watch Thread
« on: November 05, 2013, 03:01:51 PM »
I received an e-mail at 3:53 PM stating that my Kindle Fire 8.9 was being shipped on Nov. 5th and an iMessage at 5:23 PM showing it's UPS tracking number.

Interestingly, looking at My Orders on, it still shows as Pre-Ordered, but when I click on the track button, it also shows it has been received by UPS.

At the worst, it should arrive on Nov. 7th as promised, but I will hope it gets here sometime tomorrow.

Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod...) / OSX Mavericks is now available
« on: October 22, 2013, 02:21:18 PM »
Mavericks became available in the Support, Downloads portion of at around 2PM EST on October 22, 2013.

While I am downloading it, I thought I would post a message here in case anyone else is interested.

I caught most of the keynote address streamed live that announced it's availability.

There were two important things that I noticed:

1. Mavericks is available for free.

2. If your Mac is currently running Mountain Lion, it is capable of running Mavericks.

I started the download of IOS 7 to my iPad4 at around 1:10 PM EDT and it completed the download, check and install at around 1:45 PM.

While it was downloading, I signed onto the Apple Support forums and found that many other people were having problems.

After playing around on the iPad4 for a couple of minutes, I started downloading IOS 7 to my iPhone 5. It completed the download at around 2:45 PM, but soon after it started the install, it returned the error message "Software Update Unavailable".

I tried to update the message I had posted earlier showing my status on the Apple Support forums, and a page was displayed stating "We'll be back shortly. We are busy updating Apple Support Communities for you and will be back shortly".

Anyway, at this time it doesn't appear to be possible to update an iPhone 5 to IOS 7.

I don't remember exactly when my iPhone 5 upgraded to IOS 6.1.4, but I discovered a problem earlier this week.

My battery kept draining in about 4-5 hours.

When I investigated, I noticed that on the home screen "Searching..." was being displayed instead of the normal cellular signal strength bars. Also, whenever I selected the Phone app, it asked me to re-enter my voice mail password.

I thought about it a bit and remembered threads I had read on KB about how fast the kindle would drain the battery when it couldn't make a cellular connection.

Crossing my fingers, I held in the power button to shut down the iPhone and then pressed it again to power it back on.

After the boot completed, the normal cellular signal strength bars were shown on the home screen and 3 messages were downloaded.

After 24 hours, the Boost Magic app says around 77% of my battery charge is remaining.

Not Quite Kindle / Brief Amazon Tracking Problem
« on: March 18, 2013, 11:57:10 AM »
I wanted to mention this in case anyone else has a similar problem.

Around 2 PM EST on March 18, 2013 I was having the following problem:

1. I logged into My Account on

2. I selected My Orders

3. I clicked one of the Track Order buttons and received an error message

4. Since this was an order that I had just received an e-mail stating that it had been shipped, I then tried the Track Order button on a different item that I have already received. That showed the same error message.

5. I then went back to the e-mail and tried the web address that showed to track the order. That worked.

I then contacted amazon by chat to report the problem. As usual the person from amazon was very polite, although it took me awhile to explain that I just wanted to report it in case there was a problem with their web page which might give other people problems.

As soon as I ended the chat, I tried clicking the Track Order button again and this time the tracking data was returned as it should be. This was around 2:20 PM EST.

Oberon Design now has covers for the Kindle Fire 8.9 HD.

They call them Large Tablet Covers and they are also supposed to fit the Nook HD+.

They can be found at

It should be easier to insert and remove your device from this cover than the design they used for previous Kindles or the iPad.

The new design uses elastic straps for the two bottom corners and bungee cords for the two top corners, while the older design used leather straps on three corners and a bungee cord on the fourth.

Fire Talk / Wi-Fi Analyzer Installation on Fire 8.9 HD - Solved
« on: November 17, 2012, 12:15:50 PM »
I had problems getting the Wi-Fi Analyzer App to install on my Fire 8.9 HD, so here are the steps I followed in case anyone else has a similar problem.

1. Purchased the app on the amazon web site using my Mac. The description page showed that it was compatible with both my first generation Fire and Fire 8.9 HD. After I clicked the Purchase button, it said I should go to the Store on my device to download the app.

2. On my first generation Fire, I selected Apps, then Store and searched for Wi-Fi Analyzer. It brought up the description page and the Purchase button had now changed to Download. After clicking the Download button, it downloaded and installed with no problems.

3. I then tried to do the same thing on the Fire 8.9 HD. There the description page had not changed to Download, it still showed Purchase.

4. Since it was a free app anyway, I clicked the Purchase button. After a bit, it brought up a window stating that the App had already been purchased and telling me to go to my Library and select it to download it.

5. I selected Library, but the app didn't show in either the Device or Cloud list of apps.

6. Next I held in the power button to shut down the kindle and then pressed it again to make it perform a re-start. I figured this might work, since a re-start seems to solve many problems.

7. After the re-start had completed, I tried step 4 and 5 again, but nothing had changed.

8. I figured it was time to call Kindle Customer Support and see whether they had any suggestions.

9. After I had described the steps I had taken, they couldn't suggest anything other than that the app might not be compatible with the Fire 8.9 HD.

10. Since the app was free anyway, I asked whether they could delete it from my Cloud App Library so I could try to purchase it again directly from the Fire 8.9 HD.

11. I was told I could do this myself on the web by going to Your Account, Your Android Apps & Devices. After doing this, I found the Wi-Fi Analyzer in my list of Apps, clicked it's Actions button, and selected Delete this App from the drop down list.

12. After the web page had refreshed, I then went to the App Store on the Fire 8.9 HD and tried to purchase the app again. This time it downloaded and installed with no problems. I thanked them for helping me solve the problem and ended the call.

At this point, the Wi-Fi Analyzer is installed and works fine on both the original Fire and the Fire 8.9 HD, but it does not show in my list of Android Apps & Devices.

Hopefully, this might help someone else solve a similar problem.

This morning when I looked at my MacMini it showed a Notification that it had pending updates.

When I opened the App Store and checked for updates, it showed that there was one to update Mountain Lion to 10.8.2 and another to update iPhoto to 9.4.

I made the mistake of clicking the Update All button. It said it downloaded and installed the 10.8.2 update and then errored during the iPhoto download update, saying that it could not be installed on this version of Mountain Lion.

Since the Mountain Lion update had said it would require a re-start, I then tried that and the App Store still showed that neither update had been installed.

I then clicked just the button to install the 10.8.2 update. When it said it had been installed, I then performed a complete shutdown.

When I powered it back up, it then showed that it was actually performing the Mountain Lion update.

After the boot was complete, when I went into the App Store again, the only update it still showed left to do was the one for iTunes and it was able to complete that one as well.

I just thought I would mention this, in case anyone else is having a similar problem.

This afternoon I purchased an audio book for my Kindle Touch.

1. After about 50% of the audio book was downloaded, the Touch went into a reboot loop. (It would show the tree, the progress bar would appear, the home page would appear, and then after around 5 seconds it would show the tree again.)

2. I got it out of the loop, by holding the power button in for 20 seconds to make it perform a hard boot.

3. At that point it showed my home page, with the audio book at the top showing a status of pending, but it could no longer connect to WiFi.

4. I have two different wireless access points in my house and can normally see at least three of my neighbor's ones as well. At this point, the Touch doesn't see any WiFi networks at all.

5. I power cycled all my routers, network bridges and wireless access points. The Touch still didn't see any of them.

6. At this point, I called Kindle Support.

7. While on the phone, I followed instructions and basically did everything I had already tried a few more times. About the only thing extra we tried was to download version 5.0.3 of the Touch software to my computer, transfer it to the Touch via USB, and perform a software update.

8. The Touch still couldn't find any WiFi networks, so Kindle Support is going to send me a replacement.

I will start to delete all the books from the Touch in the meantime, so I won't go over the limit on the number of devices on which they can reside.

I just got a Kindle Touch, downloaded all my books, and imported my collections from my K4.

On my K4, all my collection names start with "{", so they will appear at the beginning when sorted by Title.

i.e., {{{Currently Reading}}}
      {{{To Read}}}
      {{Audio Books}}

On the Touch, the "{" appears to be ignored when performing a sort.

i.e., {Audio}
       {Audio Books}
       {{{Currently Reading}}}
       {{{To Read}}}

Does anyone have a suggestion what character I should use at the beginning of my collection names on the Touch so they will sort in the correct order?

Kindle Accessories / I almost panicked!
« on: February 14, 2011, 03:47:47 PM »
I had a meeting with my real-estate agent this afternoon and she was admiring my Celtic Hounds Oberon cover.

I wanted to show her more so I brought up my browser and tried to go to oberon's site.

When I got a page stating that this web address was for sale, I almost panicked.

Then I noticed that I had typed, instead of

Whew, now to wait for my pulse to slow before I have a heart attack.

Let's Talk Kindle! / This is a first
« on: October 11, 2010, 08:50:46 AM »
I just signed onto my account on and clicked on New Kindle Books.

The list of best sellers was still there as usual, but near the top of the screen was a message "Sorry we have no recommended books for you today".

I don't think I have every seen that before.

I wonder if this means that amazon is having problems with some of their servers.

The KBoards Photo Gallery / Is this legal?
« on: September 25, 2010, 08:27:14 AM »
I have used gimp to make screensavers from the covers of most my books.

The are not exactly 600 x 800, but most of them work well. I don't feel I will get into trouble using them on my kindle since I have purchased all the books.

Before I go through the work to make them available on kindleboards, are we going to get into trouble with the publishers or authors?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Suggestion for Creating and Maintainence of Collections
« on: September 09, 2010, 06:39:09 AM »
I just sent this e-mail to kindle-feedback.

Do any of my suggestions sound like something you would like?

For people like me, who have large fingers, the kindle 2, DX and kindle 3 keyboards are hard to use without pressing multiple keys at the same time.

I also had this problem sometimes on the kindle 1, but almost never used the keyboard on that model.

In my case, the main use of the keyboard on the K2, K3 and DX is for collections. Both creating them and adding/removing books to collections.

It would be nice if an application(s) could be developed for the PC/Mac that would allow the creation and maintainence of collections on the computer and then transferring them to the kindle via USB.

It would also be nice if this could be done on the Manage Your Kindle page on the web.

Since I keep purchasing additional kindles and adding them to my account, it would also be nice if there was an option on the Manage Your Kindle page to select all the books in your collection or multiple books in your collection and then download them to a specific kindle. AKIK, at this time the only way is to download them one at a time.

Thank you for a wonderful product that keeps getting better and better with each new model introduced.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Pre-orders?
« on: September 03, 2010, 05:07:49 AM »
I still have a couple of books on pre-order.

At the time I ordered them, I didn't have the K3 yet and I said to download them to my DXG when the became available.

Is there anyway to make them download to my K3 instead or as well?

Let's Talk Kindle! / When should I deregister?
« on: July 21, 2010, 12:35:06 PM »
I had a DXG replaced and just dropped off the bad one at UPS to be returned to Amazon.

Is it safe to deregister it now? Or should I wait until I receive an e-mail from Amazon saying that they have received it?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Damaged DXG Replacement Questions
« on: July 19, 2010, 04:27:00 PM »
I made the mistake of taking my DXG in it's Oberon cover to a baseball game Friday night.

Unfortunately there was a rain delay of over an hour and they both got wet.

I left it in the airflow from the air conditioner in my hotel room overnight hoping that it would dry out and still work, but it didn't.

Whenever I try to power it on, they only part if the screen that comes up black is a single line near the bottom of the screen.

Other than that, there is a very faint area about a half inch tall near the top of the screen. The rest of the screen alternating white lines about an eighth of an inch tall and very faint ones about a half inch tall.

It looks this way both when I make it reboot and when I just power it up.

I called Kindle Support Saturday morning and they promised to send me a replacement the next day. The support person must have almost as tired as I was.

I mentioned that I doubted they could get it delivered Sunday and we both had a good laugh. I told him I would be home Monday and it was waiting at my front door when I got back.
