Not Quite Kindle / Labradoodles & Goldendoodles
« on: December 29, 2017, 07:13:00 PM »
Anyone have one?
We lost our dear dear Golden Retriever of 13 years old last April & are finally beginning to think about another dog. Very sadly I cannot convince my DH to take a chance on a rescue dog, so we are looking for a puppy.

I'd love some advice about choosing a 'doodle, if anyone can share.

The Book Corner / Cataloging Kindle books
« on: December 26, 2017, 06:49:29 AM »
Hope this hasn't been posted before - the thought of searching "cataloging" kind of overwhelmed me.

Anyway, I currently have 1,676 Kindle books listed in my Content section at Amazon (yes my TBR 'pile' is ridiculous & yes I really should stop grabbing all those freebies). I didn't try to keep track until after I already had several hundred. In the past I have tried to: manually enter info into a spreadsheet-FAIL; begin to track them in Goodreads-FAIL; begin to track them in Airtable-FAIL; etc.

I would get so bogged down & never completed the project in any of these tools.

Does anyone know of any "quick" way to export one's book list from Kindle Content to something else that is more sortable & easier to search?

Not Quite Kindle / Air Fryers
« on: June 30, 2017, 07:51:01 PM »
I don't think there has been a thread about these. I think they've been mentioned once or twice in other threads. But please merge if I missed something.

Anyhoo. I'm thinking about getting one but don't want to spend a lot, not knowing whether I'll like it or not.
Of course, if you buy a cheap version of something & it doesn't work, then you don't know if it's because it's not your cup of tea, or it's just cheaply made.

Thinking of this one

and wondered what experiences other folks have had.

Not Quite Kindle / How do you manage & get the best out of Twitter
« on: October 09, 2016, 04:14:29 PM »
I have an account but really don't do anything with it. There is so much dribble that I have no interest in and I'm wondering if there are ways to be able to "hone" feeds & tweets but not be overwhelmed?

Fire Talk / Apps only for Kindle "Tablet"?
« on: April 12, 2015, 10:29:47 AM »
I've got an original Kindle Fire & several Android tablets & phones.
I'm going to a World Cup game in Winnipeg in June (YAY!  :P ) so I went looking for some Kindle books & apps.
I did find one Offline Map app that I could download, which I did.

But then I found this one. I could buy it with Amazon coins, but it shows as incompatible with every single one of my devices registered to Amazon. Why would I want to buy it if there are no devices it will work on?

Can anyone help me understand what device this app would work on?

Not Quite Kindle / UltraViolet videos & code redemption
« on: January 23, 2015, 10:31:03 PM »
So, I saw that the STARZ Outlander TV series is releasing the first half of Season 1 on BluRay or DVD on March 3. If you buy the BluRay version, you get an UltraViolet version.
I wasn't up on the recent evolution of UltraViolet, so I did some research.

Then I remembered that in mid-2014 I purchased a BluRay that had an UltraViolet offer. Went and dug out the case & saw that the code to redeem the UV version was stated to have expired on 10/23/2014. BUMMER!  But then I thought, well, what the heck - give it a try. The worst that could happen is that I get a message stating that the redemption code had expired.

So I signed up for a Flixter account & a UVVU account & went through the process of redeeming the code for the movie.
WOW & PLEASANT SURPRISE! The redemption code worked ! and now I have the UV copy.

Here's what I found out about the UltraViolet System:
"UltraViolet also allows users to share access to their library with up to 5 additional people, and 12 different devices, with up to three simultaneous streams"

So, if you have purchased a BluRay movie that had a UV offer but didn't redeem it, give it a try  ;D

Fire Talk / Finding free apps that also offer extra COINS
« on: January 12, 2015, 10:13:59 PM »
So, I found an app that I want; it costs 995 coins. I only have 791!
Anyone know of any other apps that are currently free that might offer extra COINS when I "purchase" a free app?
I know periodically there are some like this.

The Book Corner / Spiritual book recommendation for a clergy-friend
« on: December 15, 2014, 09:47:18 PM »
I'm not at all religious but would like to find a book to give this friend for Christmas/Yule/Hannakah/Kwanza.

Would welcome all suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Not Quite Kindle / Really need some TiVo help!
« on: September 22, 2014, 10:25:54 PM »
I had a Season Pass scheduled. Program is on CBS (The Good Wife).

Last night it was supposed to record the Season Premiere! Apparently there was something else immediately before the show that ran waaaaaayyyyyy over (about half- an hour; I'm guessing a sports event?). So, the recording missed the first 30 minutes of the Premiere - NOT GOOD.

Does anyone know of a way to prevent this from happening in the future?  I've got a TiVo Roamio.

Or am I missing something blatant?
I am a Prime member and have been able to watch Seasons 1-5 for free with Prime. I thought I recalled last year, about 1 week before Season 6 started that Season 5 became available through Prime. The AIV listing doesn't show Season 6 free on Prime.

Was some decision made or fallout between FX & Amazon?

Not Quite Kindle / Gift for a 14-year-old boy?
« on: August 10, 2014, 08:37:16 AM »
I don't know him very well. I was friends with his parents quite a while ago. They are from Morocco but are visiting in Orlando until Aug 22 & I want to send something to him.
I know he likes & plays soccer & his iPhone. He doesn't like to read. As with many his age, he's good with gadgets. He's said to be very "chatty" in school {wink}.

Hoping this great community can steer me towards an idea. Thanks in advance.

Your Admin Team / Stopped getting notifications by email ... again
« on: June 19, 2014, 06:27:37 PM »
Quite a while back I stopped receiving email notices & Betsy suggested that I clean out my list of notifications (I had a lot). Did that and notifications in email started working again.

Yesterday I realized again that I had stopped receiving these notices. I went in to my list of notifications and whittled it down to less than 10. That didn't help. There were posts in 2 threads today that I did not receive notifications for.
Looking at my email history, I haven't received notifications in threads since about June 4.

Any ideas?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Will Calibre do this or do I need another solution?
« on: November 12, 2013, 05:15:32 PM »
I got my first Kindle in 2009; I expanded from there, as many of us have  ;D and have 'delivered' my 1300+ "purchased" kindle books to somewhere between 5 and 10 Kindles and other devices since then. Some of those Kindles & devices are kaput. Back when I began getting Kindle books there wasn't even any Kindle Cloud reader as a choice for delivery.

I decided I wanted to 'catalog' my Kindle books; I began doing this through an Excel spreadsheet because I figured that Calibre can only work with books on devices that it has access to. I can't access all of the devices I've put my books on because some devices have died and some devices have been given to family members. But it's a very tedious process. I've found that going to Manage Your Kindle and pulling up my list of books, after I go through a couple of pages, the site will time out, I have to re-log in, then I have to page forward to find wherever I left off. I'm now up to page 30 and this is getting ridiculous.

Is there any way to export the list from Manage Your Kindle, or anyway to do something with Calibre for those books that are on a device that I don't currently have in my possession?

So, I have had the Kindle app installed on every one of my Android phones ever since Amazon released the Kindle reading app. It came pre-installed on the phone that I activated at the end of December 2012 and cannot be uninstalled, only disabled. This phone is an HTC Droid DNA.
All of a sudden, at the beginning of October, it started using HUGE amounts of data (which I didn't discover until yesterday, when I almost went into data overage on my shared plan).

I found one thread on Amazon discussions where 2 other people reported this same issue (beginning mid-September for them).
I contacted Kindle support (yes Kindle support and not Amazon suppport) and the person I got hold of had never heard of this problem but claimed that it would be reported. I called Verizon support and the tech support person I got also had never heard of this problem. I've googled the issue and only found that one thread on Amazon discussions.

As of right now I just cannot use this app on my phone. I've long since been a one-device-person and I find this development very disturbing.
Of course, I have the kindle app on several other devices, so I'm not completely shut out of my Kindle books, but I don't like not being able to use it on my phone.

Has anyone here noticed any similar issues? Any other thoughts about how I might trouble-shoot this problem?

Not Quite Kindle / looking for a new wireless router...again!
« on: February 12, 2013, 05:21:43 PM »
As the title states. Wonder what recommendations members might have this go round.
I posed this question a couple of years ago & got great suggestions, so I thought I'd come back to KB.
Don't currently have any devices that can take advantage of AC connection yet, but I suppose it's not out of the realm of future needs.

Let's Talk Kindle! / only 2.6 Mb space left on my Kindle Touch!
« on: January 17, 2013, 06:27:22 PM »
and I've got 51 pages of books listed from my home screen! I cannot see going through each book & deleting.
Do you thing the best way to free up space is to just reset to factory & only d'l the few books I'm actually reading?
(Obviously everything is still in the Cloud on Amazon's servers)

And it goes without saying that my Fire's carousel is out of control! LOL

Not Quite Kindle / audiobooks other than
« on: January 09, 2013, 12:15:03 AM »
So, I'm trying to find a source for audiobooks other than Audible, where:
1) you don't have to enter into a subscription! and
2) audiobooks might cost less than $10 per audiobook.

does anyone have any suggestions?

Not Quite Kindle / Bluetooth headset for Android devices
« on: December 31, 2012, 10:00:58 PM »
I am a rabid consumer of audiobooks and listen to them through whatever Android smartphone I have at the moment.
I am in the market for a new bluetooth headset that will allow me to pause/resume my audiobooks while listening to them on my smartphone.
I have a Plantronics M-50 that will play the audiobooks but it won't pause/resume them.

I also have these (which do pause/resume): but - I don't like wearing them when I'm driving.

It's this pause/resume feature that I most want, and a single-ear device is preferred (when I'm doing housework around the house, it's good if I only have one ear listening, when family wants to talk to me).

So, I'm looking for recommendations, and I'm hoping the fabulous techies here on KB will guide me to a possible perfect device.  ;D

Fire Talk / Sketching or Whiteboard app recommendations
« on: September 12, 2012, 07:41:13 PM »
I've got both a Fire and a Google Nexus 7 tablet. I'm taking a couple of classes at my community college where we have computers available throughout the class, so I take notes online. However, occasionally the instructors draw a diagram on a whiteboard and I pull out my pen/paper to capture this diagram. Then, if I want it with all my other notes, I've got to go back and scan/upload it.  >:(

Can anyone recommend a sketching or white board app that would do this?
I've tried several 'drawing' apps that I got either from Amazon or Google Play, but haven't yet found anything that works very well.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Not Quite Kindle / I want to learn HTML, PHP/MySQL, & Linux
« on: August 27, 2012, 07:25:39 PM »
I tried to register today for classes at my local community college (classes start this week).
I've waited too long and the classes I wanted are already filled.
I wanted to get started on something before next semester but I don't really know where to start.
Can some of the geeks suggest some decent website tutorials that might get me pointed in the right direction?

Suggestions, Comments / Not getting notifications for 2 threads
« on: May 22, 2012, 07:48:35 PM »
So - I'm getting notifications, as best I can tell, for all but 2 threads I've requested notifications on. For these 2 threads, I've gone in, unsubscribed & resubscribed with no positive results. It just seems odd that it's only these 2 threads, which are:
Special Offers list
Kindle Fire and the Free App of the Day

Any suggestions?
