Writers' Cafe / Genre question - Fiction or Non-Fiction
« on: November 24, 2017, 04:32:22 PM »
Yes, I know the difference between fiction and non-fiction except this book is going to be part fiction and part non-fiction.

A Slice of Life is contemporary romance and it revolved around the writing of a cookbook. The original book contains fictional bios of people who contribute recipes to this fictional (at the time) cookbook. I received several requests through reviews and many more through emails to write the cookbook. My cousin the chef even said I should and contributed some recipes of his own.

I'm now gathering and testing recipes and I've already written fictional bios to go with each of them. The introduction will make it clear that the bios and accompanying photos are fictional. I'll be putting out the cookbook separately as well as in a bundle with the original two books (fiction)

So, is the book fiction because of the bios or non-fiction because it's an actual cookbook?

Clear as mud?

Writers' Cafe / Any problems with Babelcube these days?
« on: October 21, 2017, 07:45:16 PM »
It wasn't too long ago that authors were complaining about not being paid by Babelcube so I put translations to the bottom of my to-do list. Any change with that? Better or worse?

Raven's Witch - a novella

Man or familiar, Allan soon realizes it is up to him to rescue Rowena from the two hundred year old legend that keeps her spellbound.

Not Quite Kindle / DWTS Season 24
« on: March 16, 2017, 07:52:58 PM »
Sorry I'm so late with this but I just found out tonight that Season 24 will begin this Monday, 3/20.

Here's a link to the stars and pros.

Heather Morris is a professional dancer and we should see some good routines. Nancy Kerrigan as a pro skater should also do well. Two gymnasts, and they always do well. Then there's Charo. She should be fun.

Kym Johnson is now married to Robert Herjavec. Their romance was pretty obvious.

I'm looking forward to Monday!!

Has anyone gotten a 1099 from ACX? I haven't gotten a paper one or a notice that there's a downloadable form on ACX.

Kindle Accessories / Easel Back Case for Fire HD 8 2016
« on: January 05, 2017, 10:02:47 AM »
Amazon replaced the first HD 8 that wouldn't charge. My new one keeps randomly shutting down. I finally discovered the problem is the Fintie easel back case and the problem stopped when I removed the case.

I was looking for an Amazon case but couldn't find one. I'm reluctant now to buy something not made by Amazon unless I get a good recommendation from somebody here. Anyone have any luck with a case for this Fire?

Anything Else Amazon / Amazon Pop-Up Store
« on: November 05, 2016, 02:01:45 PM »
I was watching Project Runway and they did a show in a pop-up store. I'm really behind in this sort of thing so I had to look it up.

Surprise, surprise. Amazon has pop-up stores for their Fire products.

Not Quite Kindle / Anybody else in the "eye" of Hurricane Matthew?
« on: October 05, 2016, 05:22:35 PM »
I live on the Treasure Coast and as of now, it looks like Hurricane Matthew is going to make landfall within 50 miles of me. In other words, I'm right in the middle of the possible landfall. We're as prepared as we can be. Plenty of food and water, although we still need to put up our shutters and Mom's shutters. One of my neighbor's is going to help with Mom's house. GS and I can easily do our house.

Good luck to everyone.

Not Quite Kindle / Project Runway - Season 15

Started two weeks ago. Anyone watching?

I caught up last night and I guess there's another episode available tonight on Hulu.

There are some really good designers on this season and I think it's going to be very interesting.

Not Quite Kindle / DWTS - Season 23
« on: September 06, 2016, 04:27:42 PM »
Sorry I'm late with this folks. I was picking up a magazine with Derek, Cheryl and Maks on the cover and the checkout lady and I went into ecstasy over Derek coming back. She told me the new season starts this Monday. BTW, all three pros are returning. Yay!

Here's the lineup.

Amber Rose                Model & actress                    Maksim Chmerkovsky
Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds    Singer            Allison Holker
Calvin Johnson    NFL wide receiver                    Lindsay Arnold
Jake T. Austin    Television actor                           Jenna Johnson
James Hinchcliffe    IndyCar driver                           Sharna Burgess
Jana Kramer    Country music singer & actress    Gleb Savchenko
Laurie Hernandez    Olympic gymnast                    Valentin Chmerkovskiy
Marilu Henner    Actress                                            Derek Hough
Maureen McCormick    Actress (Brady Bunch)    Artem Chigvintsev
Rick Perry    Governor of Texas (2000–15)             Emma Slater
Ryan Lochte    Olympic swimmer                            Cheryl Burke
Terra Jolé    Reality TV star                                    Sasha Farber
Vanilla Ice    Rapper                                            Witney Carson

I just finished reading it. Good story but being written in play form was a bit difficult to follow at times.

The sheer number of scene changes makes me wonder how they performed this on stage. I hope they publish the DVD soon.

BTW, if you haven't been to Pottermore lately, JKR's been writing about the American School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (Ivormorney) since January. All new houses to be sorted into.

Writers' Cafe / Audiobook Series - Different narrators?
« on: May 25, 2016, 07:25:01 PM »
Let me explain.

I have a three books series which is going to be my next audio project. The first two books are about the same woman in different phases of her life. She's a strong but quiet widow who works for her church and raises her daughter on her own. The third book is about Lena's daughter who has an entirely different personality. To give you an idea, the title of the third is The Bold Heart. Jackie is more of a damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead kind of gal.

I know when I listened to The Good Earth trilogy, Anthony Heald evoked the exact feelings I had when reading the first book. The second and third books were about the next generations and they used a different narrator. I understood why because the successive generations were entirely different from Wang Lung, but it did throw me at first. That's why I'm concerned about using a different narrator for the third book.

It's possible that I can find a narrator who can do both personalities, but I think it's a long shot.

So, what do you think about changing narrators for the last book?

The Book Corner / The Soul Identity series
« on: March 21, 2016, 09:05:03 AM »
Many, many moons ago, Dennis Batchelder was a member of this board. I remember his first book, Soul Identity, sold for $0.01. Unbelievable, right?

Anyway, I loved Soul Identity and it's sequel, Soul Intent.

Finally, the next book in the series is available for pre-order.

The first book is free and you should read it first.
