Writers' Cafe / Numbers from a Select Free Run
« on: January 30, 2014, 06:21:33 AM »
This past week I ran IT'S IN HIS KISS for free figuring I was probably taking my books out of Select when they finished this quarter. After my free run, that's a definite.

KISS had been selling about 1 book every other day. Not a big seller. It was free Saturday - Tuesday.

Saturday it went free. It climbed fairly quickly and then maintained between 220-400 as it's rank. I never did scratch the magic top 100 (thanks to everyone here who tried to get me there).

I was pleased with the rank and have already started receiving some lovely notes from readers.

WEDNESDAY: Initial rank 262k... yes, 262,580 was my new rank.

BUT! Don't panic, right? There's always that initial really bad rank after a free run and then it adjusts.
So mid-day Wednesday it adjusted.... to 258k --- my free run punished my rank by roughly 200k. Kind of surprised by that.

I'm not rank obsessed, but I had hoped for a high enough rank to scratch onto the bottom of one of my sub-categories. This was quite a surprise.

Luckily, overnight 4 people bought the book and brought my rank down to 52K -- which is just about where I started with 1 book in 24 hours v 4 books in 24 hours.

So, take from it what you will. I'm just reporting.

If your point of free is to get reviews and hope to find new readers, I'll say this: In 4 days I gave away 44% of the books I gave away last year in 2 and still had pretty good showing on my sub-categories. We all knew Select was a different animal. If your point is to get a bump, not sure this is the tool for that any more unless I'm a really odd outlier.

Writers' Cafe / Are your select free days smaller?
« on: January 25, 2014, 02:36:25 PM »
I'm midway thru my first day of a few day run of free on my short story It's in His Kiss and my giveaways are at about 9% of the one I did a year ago. I'd hoped for a bit of a better run keeping in mind that my Bria readers know my Caitie name now but a ton of them are tweeting me that they already bought, is it just me with lower numbers on a free day or is it across the board free days are smaller?

My rank isn't horrible, but I'd love to see it jump more even though my downloads are slowing down.

Writers' Cafe / Let's Talk Goodreads!
« on: November 26, 2013, 11:02:21 AM »
No - not reviews and if you should respond or not. We have enough threads about that.

Let's talk events! Anyone do Goodreads events? What did you do? Was it successful? Do you wish you'd done something differently?

Writers' Cafe / PAN Membership
« on: November 18, 2013, 07:59:00 AM »
There's a half-way decent chance I'm going to become RWA PAN eligible this year with Secret Girlfriend *crosses fingers*

As someone who RWA has had a profound impact on my writing and writing life this is a huge deal to me. I know to others it may seem like a little thing, but this is definitely a milestone for me. I hit my 30-day cliff and am still selling fairly well, so that $$ threshold keeps inching closer!

So, for those of you here who have applied as an indie - did they ask for anything specific or did you just do screenshots? How long did it take?

Yes, I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'm really hoping people keep buying Secret Girlfriend so it earns its way in!

Writers' Cafe / Goodreads Reviews
« on: November 06, 2013, 11:49:21 AM »
I typically stay out of the way of readers and away from reviews, but since the new book just came out, I went in yesterday morning to see that it was showing up correctly and then just now again to see if anyone was reading it.

And here's what's weird: A previous book has lost a few reviews and its rank dropped. Is Amazon hitting GR reviews now?

I will say this, I scanned them just to make sure everyone's playing fairly and no one I know has pulled a "defend and destroy" on readers. So, I know that there was nothing questionable in my reviews.

Am I the only one - is anyone else seeing more GR reviews disappear since the Great Deleting of 2013?

Writers' Cafe / What happens if you "de-list" a book on Kobo?
« on: October 31, 2013, 11:44:31 AM »
Some of you may have seen this because part of it played out on Twitter, but I'd like to take my books off Kobo.

If you "de-list" them, does this delete them, or just take them off sale?

Writers' Cafe / Issue solved
« on: August 01, 2013, 05:27:18 AM »
Soooo... something happened to my stylesheet. I honestly don't know what. But, I've gone through and looked at every font size and none of them are wacky. Can anyone here tell me how to fix this: (1/2 way down. You'll know it when you see it).

All the suggestions I've gotten so far haven't helped me locate the issue. If you're someone who knows how to fix it, but needs to see it - let me know and I'll mail it to you in notepad.

Writers' Cafe / What's your return percentage?
« on: July 27, 2013, 05:01:01 PM »
My returns have jumped. The books that used to have 1-2% return rate are now double digits.

So, what are your return rates and genres?

My Adult Rom Coms are about 28% and my YA is at 16% - this seems huge to me.

At RWA they said, "more sales, more returns" -- I completely agree. But the jump in % with the same average number of sales has been taking me by surprised for the last 3 months.

What are yours?

Writers' Cafe / Accountants - How did you find yours?
« on: July 26, 2013, 06:38:41 AM »
The LCC thread has been great. Now, how did you find your accountant? Was there anything special you asked them?

Recommendations are out. I've tried that and none of my local friends use one.

Writers' Cafe / LLCs
« on: July 25, 2013, 05:48:45 AM »
At RWA people talked a lot about planning to be successful. One of the things that was mentioned was having an LLC. I was so busy live-tweeting that I wrote it down and then realized I didn't know WHY I might want an LLC.

Can someone tell me the benefits for authors specifically?

After the Amazon chat, I talked to Jon Fine about the first sale/return/pirate situation after he assured us that they watch chronic returners carefully.

I told him that we often see it most clearly with new writers posting that they just got their first sale... followed a few hours later by a return bringing them back down to zero then a pirated copy showing up in their alerts.

He said if we had enough posts for data he could look into it (honestly, Amazon was amazing and willing to discuss/look into just about anything brought up.)

So, if you were one of these threads or have a link to it, could you post it here.

Writers' Cafe / Ranking After Free
« on: July 04, 2013, 10:49:40 AM »
It's been two days since my book came off free and still not adjusted sales ranking. Anyone come off free lately and know the delay time? The book is selling, so it's not waiting for some sales.

Writers' Cafe / phone number for amazon???
« on: June 14, 2013, 08:15:58 AM »

Seriously - I SENT A FREAKING SCREEN SHOT. Does anyone have the number for authors to call?

When I press contact from KDP there's zero phone options. I don't want to just call the general customer service, but this issue is getting out of hand.

Writers' Cafe / Amazon Front Page Not Linking
« on: June 14, 2013, 05:37:02 AM »
Hi all,

Yesterday WRECKLESS went live. Unfortunately, if you search my name (bria quinlan) or the title from's front page, the only thing that comes up is the paper copy (and a bunch of star wars stuff... I am obviously in charge of star wars stuff.)

This wouldn't be a big deal if the paper and e-versions were linked. So far I've gotten 12 "complaints" from readers that I only put it out in paper. Obviously I send them the direct link to the kindle copy, but in the mean time I wonder how many people are just like, Well, screw it. And walk away.

I've emailed amazon who doesn't seem to see an issue (of course) bc, OH! LOOK! Here's a direct link. (Dear amazon, please send that to everyone in the world *snort*)  - next email: Well, EVENTUALLY the kindle and paper will link and then if people click the paper copy and go into it they can then look for the kindle copy then click on it and then buy it there *head desk*

Anyone else had this happen? Did it get fixed? Any magic bullet?

Writers' Cafe / I hit publish on my first full length
« on: June 13, 2013, 04:53:03 PM »
So, today my first full-length went live. It's a YA and I have 2 more coming out this fall.

I think someone should use me as a test case around the idea that the more words there are the higher my anxiety is.

*considers taking up drinking*

Writers' Cafe / CreateSpace Timing FYI 0.0
« on: June 08, 2013, 02:49:04 PM »
It took 45 mins... yes, minutes.

The rep I spoke with about something else said they're seeing faster times, that they've let Amazon know that the 5-7 days quote is throwing people off and they tell them weekly that writers want to be able to set things up for pre-order or AT LEAST an "available on <date>" line.

But, yeah. 45 minutes.

Writers' Cafe / Author Central
« on: June 08, 2013, 06:21:45 AM »
Hi All,

I'm trying to add the new pen name separately on author central, but under the same pen name. I followed the directions discussed here:

about hitting join/checking new/using the same address and not putting your password in

and it doesn't work for me. These directions are only from January.

Either I'm doing something wrong or Amazon has already changed the rules again and I can't find them. I really don't want to have to run around using a different email and going in and out of accounts just to check things out.

Writers' Cafe / Any advice?
« on: June 05, 2013, 12:28:51 PM »
I outted the 'other' me this week as my agent and I are rebelling and going completely indie. My subs are pulled, the first one is edited, formatted, and ready to go. The turn around time is short and so I'm curious what people have done to make their cover reveals special when they're not hiring someone to set up a whole tour.

The reveal is Monday (I've had 5 Awesome Revealers volunteer so far... 1 is someone I don't know and 2 are in different circles, so that's nice. Plus a book blogger) and then the launch is on the 18th (still waiting to proof the CS copy)

So, reveals - any advice?

or galleys... or whatever you want to call the copy you proof?

Liliana and I both have books on RT's Cheaper By The Dozen this week!!!

It's my 15 seconds of fame ;)

I'm curious what other people use. I've been following all the convos and know I'm horrible at coming up with these. Curious what other people come up with.

Writers' Cafe / Goodreads verification
« on: May 20, 2013, 09:34:27 AM »
Say you're setting up a new goodreads account... say you want to add a new book release under that new account, you know, just hypothetically.... How long does that "verification email" take if you've hit 'resend' twice in the last two hours?
