The Book Corner / Kindle Unlimited
« on: December 08, 2017, 09:34:51 AM »
I would like to hear from people who have signed up for Kindle Unlimited to hear your thoughts? Do you find that you pick up a lot of books you really don't have interest in? Are there enough books you really want to read that make the cost worth it?

Fire Talk / Trouble Shoot Kindle Fire
« on: December 05, 2017, 12:04:34 PM »
I have just gotten rid of my old stack of Kindles and am waiting for my Oasis 2 to arrive. In the meantime, I dragged out my 6" Fire to bring it up to date. The Fire has never been used in my current house. I connected to wifi easy enough, and in Settings it verifies that wifi is connected. However, the little wifi symbol at the top has an X. It won't download any of my current books in the Cloud. I think I am updating right now, which may solve the issue. Any ideas?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Kindle and iPad Kindle App not synching
« on: December 03, 2017, 12:28:17 PM »
I have long gone back and forth reading on my Kindle (voyage) and my iPad. I have never had trouble synching automatically between the two. Lately the sync has not been happening. Is there anything I can do?

Lately, and quite suddenly, my iPhone6 and iPad Mini have stopped synching mail (gmail) with my MacBook Pro. Generally, I read my email on my MacBook in the morning and delete most of it. Later in the day I usually check email from my iPhone or iPad. Lately, those two devices are still showing all my latest mail and do not even show my latest messages as READ, much less DELETED. I have done nothing in settings and wouldn't even know how to. Other people do not seem to be complaining about this, so I assume it is not an update problem. If I cannot solve it soon I will make an appointment with an Apple Genius.

Anything Else Amazon / ECHO Prime Music Unlimited
« on: July 14, 2017, 09:48:00 AM »
Now that I have Echo, Dot, Tap located all over my house  ;D I have renewed interest in Prime Music Unlimited. I realize I can get a free trial for a month. From what I read, it looks like I can only enable it on one device. Does that mean one device at a time, or one device period? If I enable it on the Echo, does that mean I cannot use it with the Tap?

Anything Else Amazon / Prime Day
« on: July 10, 2017, 09:06:40 AM »
I must the only one on the planet who does not "get" Amazon Prime Day.   :(  I know the basics....items come up with great prices. However, I am not one to sit at the computer and wait for alerts that such and such a gadget has a good price for a few hours. For those of you with experience, how do you navigate with sanity through all the offerings?

All of a sudden the book I am reading on my Voyager has stopped showing the progress at the bottom. It has been set to show the percentage of the book I have read. I can't find the setting that turns it back on. This happened one time before with another book. I like to see how far along I am. Any suggestions?

Let's Talk Kindle! / Kindle Voyager Frozen
« on: February 22, 2017, 05:05:39 PM »
Oh dear, my Kindle Voyager seems to be frozen on the page that I close up last night. I have put it on the charger just in case a low charge is the problem. I can't even power off. Any suggestions?

Anything Else Amazon / Difficulty with TAP finding audible books
« on: January 25, 2017, 01:10:41 PM »
I just downloaded a book to my Kindle and added the Audible. I anticipated that I could read the book from the Kindle or listen to the book using my TAP. However, the TAP cannot seem to find the book. Is there something else I need to do? I am giving the command "read Crime on the Fens by Joy Ellis." The immediate response is "finding your book in Audible", then "I'm sorry, I am having trouble getting the book." I have checked, and it is listed in my Audible library. Any thing else I should be doing?

ETA: I just asked my Echo the same task and got the same response. "Sorry I am having trouble getting the book."

Not Quite Kindle / Quilters and Sewers
« on: July 17, 2016, 01:33:03 PM »
I know we must have some experienced quitters around here, besides the famous BetsyTrue. I have a Bernina 1530 bought in the early 90s. It is a true workhorse. It has been idle for a few years and is at the Bernina shop now getting a good spa treatment. In the meantime, I have been thinking of getting a lighter weight mechanical machine to cover when the Bernina is gone and to drag to classes/retreats. I have looked at Janome, Brother, Singer for ideas. Any recommendations? I would like to stay under $500. I don't need anything fancy, since my Bernina has way more than I can imagine using. I mainly do quilt piecing (and send it out for the quilting), pillows, bags, etc.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Why doesn't my Voyage show reading progress?
« on: June 10, 2016, 08:28:56 AM »
Lately my Voyage is not showing my reading progress at the bottom of the page. I like to see how far along I am in the book, even if it is only the percentage of what I have read. Lately I have not been able to do this. I have gone into settings, but don't even see the setting to turn on reading progress. Was this changed in an update?

Anything Else Amazon / What Echo skills do you use?
« on: May 14, 2016, 07:19:03 AM »
I enabled Kayak today in the app today, thinking it might com in useful. However, there are 90 pages of skills. I would love to hear what other recommend. I don't want to scroll through 90 pages.

Not Quite Kindle / Acorn TV
« on: February 26, 2016, 11:30:16 AM »
Has anyone subscribed to Acorn TV? It offers streaming of a lot of BBC productions. I just heard of it, but maybe it has been out for a long time.

Not Quite Kindle / Tell me about Chromebooks
« on: September 19, 2015, 08:32:42 AM »
I have been a happy Apple user for over a year. MacBookPro, iPad Mini, iPhone 6. I am basically retired, but I have a small private contract for consulting with a school district. The district uses PCs and recently changed over to Google Drive. The students all have access to Chromebooks. Whenever I send in my invoice (monthly) I have to  first convert it to a Word document so that my secretary can read it. Not a hard task, but I wish the district computers could read Pages documents. I am thinking of buying a Chromebook just for work. I would not need much storage because I would store any documents in the Cloud. Will my Pages documents that I store in iCloud talk to my Google Cloud? Buying a Chromebook seems like a fairly inexpensive way for me to be able to  use a PC to write and share Word documents. Any comments? Any suggestions on which Chromebook to buy?

Not Quite Kindle / Buying Bed Sheets
« on: September 07, 2015, 09:06:11 AM »
We recently bought a new mattress set (Sealy Posturepedic) which will be delivered next week. We can't remember when we bought our current mattress and it is sagging on both sides, so we knew it was time to buy a new one. It is a pillow top and is deeper than our current mattress. Of course, this means we probably have to get new sheets with deeper pockets. We will need sheets with 18" pockets. I also want a roomy top sheet. Our current top sheets are not wide enough to tuck in the sides. The selection of Queen size sheets on the market is staggering. And costly. I want 100% supima cotton with 400-500 thread count. Has anyone bought sheets recently and are happy with them? Jane

I have both an iPhone4 and iPad Mini. I am quite sure the calendars have synced in the past, but now they don't seem to be syncing. Yesterday I entered some appointments on my iPhone calendar, but they are not showing on my Mini.

Not Quite Kindle / Buying a Mac
« on: June 02, 2014, 07:54:48 AM »
I know we have discussed this subject before, but I can't find the original thread. I have a Dell laptop that is aging. It seems every 3-5 years or so, I have to replace my laptop. I am thinking of jumping to a Mac this time. I have an iPhone and an iPad Mini (retina) that I like very much. I know nothing about buying a Mac, however. It looks to me that they have recently added some pricing for educators, which should work in my favor. I have browsed the Apple Store to learn more. Is the Apple Store the best place to buy? Does it really matter? I don't have an Apple Store within 150 miles of me. Any suggestions of where I should start my search, including helpful articles? I know this is a very broad subject, but thanks for the help.

The Book Corner / An Evening With Ivan Doig
« on: April 26, 2014, 07:51:31 AM »
Last night DH and I had the honor of sitting (with a few other people!) and listening to author Ivan Doig talk about his life, his writings, and being an author. He also did some short readings from some of his works. What a thrill to listen to a great author describe how he comes up with a character and brings that character to life over many years.

I usually listen to audible books on my iPhone. I tried to download the Audible app for android from the Amazon store to my Fire HDX, but it says it is not compatible. How do I listen to books on my Fire? Sometimes I want to purchase the whispersyn audible along with the book.

Not Quite Kindle / PC Backup
« on: March 20, 2014, 07:48:28 AM »
I have been using Dell Tech Concierge for my PC backups and maintenance. My subscription is due for renewal in a couple of weeks, and I have decided not to renew due to the expense. I think I will purchase another hard drive for backup. However, I have never looked into external hard drives, and have no idea what to buy. Any suggestions?

Not Quite Kindle / Dental Care for Dogs
« on: February 25, 2014, 08:17:23 AM »
Our Cavalier King Charles, Jack, just had his annual visit to the vet. Everything checked out fine.....except his teeth. The vet recommends a teeth cleaning and pulling 3 teeth. One is actually cracked, which isn't too surprising because Jack loves to chew on landscaping bark and rocks. The price for the procedure is not cheap, but I think we might be in for further costs down the road if we don't take care of the problem now. There is also some blood work that the vet likes to do before any surgery that adds cost to the bill. I am not sure what the recovery time will be. We have not made the appointment yet. Any experiences with teeth? Anything we can give Jack to help with teeth cleaning after the surgery? All our dogs eat is dry dog food and the occasional table snack (from DH, not me!). Are some dog foods better for teeth than others?

Fire Talk / Reading and Listening on Kindle Fire HDX 7"
« on: February 13, 2014, 12:10:53 PM »
I am going to be traveling soon, and I thought it would be a good (and easy) idea to load some books onto my Kindle and add the listening feature. I thought I would be listening to the books through audible.com, but Amazon says that the audible app will not work on my Fire. I would like to access my entire audible library on my Fire, but can't figure out how.

What does the reading/listening feature use for audible on the Fire? Is the fidelity good, or is robotic speech like in the old text to speech Kindles.

Generally I listen to audible books on my iPhone, but I can't figure out why I can't get an Audible app for my Kindle Fire since Amazon owns Audible. I think I am missing something that is right before my nose!

Not Quite Kindle / East Coast/MidWest Weather!
« on: January 03, 2014, 05:56:35 PM »
Here in the PNW our weather is mild and warm. We can't even claim a winter. However, I know many of you are suffering severe weather. I am hoping you are staying dry and warm, and keeping the electrical systems running. I am sending warm thoughts to you.   :-*

Fire Talk / Talk to me about renting Amazon movies
« on: December 07, 2013, 12:22:18 PM »
The week before Christmas we will be staying in Olympic National Park. No internet, no wifi, no TV. Lots of reading and knitting! However, I would like to download some rental movies to my Fire before we leave. However, they are 24 or 48 hour rentals. Does the time limit start when we start watching the movie, or when we download the movie? If the latter is the case, I guess we will have to wait until we can find some free wifi (about 45 miles from our destination) to download a movie.

Not Quite Kindle / Celebrating a New Crock-Pot
« on: November 22, 2013, 03:20:29 PM »
My purchase of the week is a new crock-pot. I have several crock-pots/slowcookers, but many have gone to good homes with the kids. With my Amazon points I bought this crock-pot, which is highly ranked by America's Test Kitchen.

This is my first fully programmable crock-pot. Recipe sharing appreciated.
