Writers' Cafe / Quality or Quantity?

Firstly, can I say I'm not judging anyone here... but I can't help notice some authors have 'loads' of books out there. Are they any good? Maybe I'm a slow writer but I have just taken 7 years to write a trilogy. First book took me 2 yrs research, 4 weeks to write, then 6 months to edit. Second was quicker, then there was a gap while I did other stuff and then spent a year or 2 writing the 3rd one, which I've just released a week ago.

So, can I ask - do writers churn out books in the hope that one will be a best seller, or is it a numbers game where people think if they sell a few of each title they'll amass lots of sales overall?

Here in Wales, I'm seen as prolific!  Why?  Because I might produce more than one book a year!  Interesting to see what others are doing.
