Writers' Cafe / Does fast release work mid-series?
« on: October 27, 2017, 03:45:55 PM »
I'm about to wrap up the first arc of my current series. When it launched earlier this month, I dropped book two after seven days and book three after 18 days. This book will be about a month out.

The first major arc wraps up on book four. Has anyone experimented with holding back on publishing a mid-series book, then using a rapid release schedule? Or is it more important to keep the existing books floating by releasing as soon as books are ready?

For reference, I'm roughly taking six weeks to complete a book right now (that may slow over Christmas as we are movingn, but will pick up when school starts at end of January)

Writers' Cafe / Please show me how to be wide AND in KU!
« on: September 28, 2017, 02:30:50 PM »
Sound like a scam? I thought so too, but there are people now claiming to teach a method to both reap the benefits of select and also enroll in non-Amazon platforms.

Of course, it's all 'proprietary' info. No peeks behind the curtain here. Is it outright lies? Are they classing 'wide' as bookfunnel only (who claim you can sell via them while under 90 day contract, sounds sounds just as bogus)? Are they scheming preorders and timing contract expiries, then ripping down books and re-enrolling?

This thread is either a huge warning to people shelling out mega bucks for bad advice, or an info thread where someone can tell me yes, this is a thing, and here is why (if not how) it adheres to terms. Because if Amazon is not explicitly ok with this they can cancel our entire account.

So, what gives? Legit, or giant bowl of nope?

Writers' Cafe / Word Tracking Apps: what do you recommend?
« on: September 14, 2017, 02:40:52 AM »
I'm after something that fills the following criteria, and I can't find ANYTHING!

IOS compatible (and available on the AU store, so Fox's app is out)
Allows 'total project count' entries, rather than 'words this session'. I write in Docs and I don't want to mess around with a calculator to figure out my daily or session count
Tracks chains, and shows me at a glance how may words I've been doing on previous days

Ideally will also:
Show me how many words I need to average to reach goal
-but also, not force me to set a goal
Sync between phone and ipad
Not crash!

Let's Talk Kindle! / Login for kids?
« on: May 23, 2017, 11:56:04 PM »
If I get my kid a kindle or a tablet and the app, is there a way that he can have his own 'account' so my books don't show up, while still letting me control it and use my own payment details? He's six, so I don't want him one-clicking the world or reading my PNR books 👀

Writers' Cafe / Dragon mic help!
« on: February 07, 2017, 04:41:48 PM »
I've traveled through the old threads with no luck. Can anyone recommend a mic that:
Is for laptops (Bluetooth available)
Is NOT a standalone like a yeti
Is <$85
Is wireless (Bluetooth or wifi)
Does NOT rely on a headphone jack
Preferably has both ears and will work with my iPhone as well.

I do NOT have Dragon pro, so I have to do all my dictation while connected to laptop. I also move around a lot so a static mic won't work. I'm currently looking at Plantronics or Jabra.

The Book Bazaar / Gorgeous free Gluten/Dairy free cookbook
« on: October 08, 2016, 03:31:34 PM »
Hey guys! Just teamed up with a friend to create this beautiful breakfast cookbook. Right now it's only available on Instafreebie but will move to Amazon (as a paid product) in a few weeks.

Writers' Cafe / Cowriting payments in different countries
« on: October 03, 2016, 06:04:16 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm an aussie, co-writing with someone from the US. He will pub our book under his account and pay me my cut, but what do we need to know about taxes?

Australia is a tax-treaty country. Zon hold 5% of my earnings, D2D and Kobo do not. I have an ABN and can invoice him. What do we need to know? An accountant will be involved but I want to make sure all the right questions are covered.

Writers' Cafe / Formatting: recipe book with images?
« on: October 02, 2016, 10:07:48 PM »
Hey guys. I need to convert a word docx file to ePub, and its image heavy. I asked before, then derailed the conversation assuming I could use PDF instead of ePub, then found out that won't work.

I can't afford to buy software and I'm on PC, not Mac. There are online sites that claim they'll take a PDF and covert to ePub - will one of these work?

Otherwise if you want to quote for a 48 page book formatting job, pm me :) we've used a template so the word doc includes a ton of text and image boxes, if that makes a difference.

Writers' Cafe / Cookbook formatter
« on: September 24, 2016, 10:32:34 PM »
Hey guys! I need some advice on creating an image heavy (photo per recipe) cookbook into ePub format. It's not for sale, we want to shovel it through Instafreebie so I don't think size is an issue. Any idea? I use scrivener for most things but am not sure if it'll add the pics, or if there are better or easier ways. Free or cheap, if there's a hefty price tag we'll just pay a formatter (feel free to send your rates if you do this).

Writers' Cafe / Managing similar-but-not-same genres
« on: September 22, 2016, 03:59:41 PM »
I've been hit by a little overwhelm at what's to come so thought I'd ask advice here.

Right now I have one name. One series. One genre.

I'm about to have two names (though linked), two series in different genres AND am launching a totally related online business.

My big question is how to organise my UF and SF personalities. I'm using my initials for the SF so I can split my author page for clarity's sake, but all the work will feed from one website. I'm pretty active on Twitter and FB and currently have a mailing list of 3000.

Any tips for branding that clearly shows both genres? Should I make a new FB page for the new name (I barely keep up with the one I've got)?

My ML is through mailerlite and I'm hoping someone can clarify - I believe they delete repeat names, does this mean I can't have one person on both my SF and my UF lists? How can I separate or segment them, or should I even bother?

Finally, any tips or tweaks for yang multiple Twitter and Insta accounts? This is more for the side project as I don't want to link that to my fiction brand. Logging in and out is a pain and I've got stuff linked for cross posting that I don't want to break (some natively, some through IFTTT)

Writers' Cafe / Format for assisted reading?
« on: September 16, 2016, 01:40:47 AM »
I have a reader who says none of the available platforms work with her screen reader (text to speech). She REALLY wants me to put my book on smash words but only as a four book set (not planning on that til Xmas).

Is this a legit complaint and if so and I decide to send it to her as a freebie, would PDF downloads be best?

Writers' Cafe / Cross-Promo Master List?
« on: September 11, 2016, 06:03:51 PM »
Is there a post or thread containing all the current x-promo opportunities, like CJ Brightly and Patty Jansen and Roz Marshall's? There are others but I only track the UF ones:D Trying to hunt down any I may have missed, as I've done Patty's, Roz's is 99c (I'm free) and CJ pulls for mailing list rather than downloads.

The Book Corner / I'm bored but I don't know what I want.
« on: August 18, 2016, 12:13:02 AM »
I don't often stray far from my usual fantasy, some UF and more recently, selected SF books. I've been thrown a few curveballs in the last year, though - all the birds in the sky, the silence of all things and Ancillary Mercy were all just far enough outside my sphere of 'normal' that I now want more.

On the flip side I find a lot of popular stuff pretentious. I hate romance. Some deeper themes call me while many are repellant. Leviathan Wakes bored me (why? It was a good book).

What do you suggest and more importantly, why? What made you love it?

In the books I love it was mostly the characters. I fell in love with Breq and Awn, Auri, Patricia and Whatshisname. I thought the concept of Breq/JoT was incredibly well done. I adore Rothfuss's complete disregard for plot. ATBITS had an ever changing voice and such honesty.

What would you recommend this fussy reader? (Low priced ebooks preferred!)

Writers' Cafe / Aussie Accountant - need a recommendation!
« on: July 01, 2016, 02:49:58 AM »
Who do you use and what do you pay? I'm after someone familiar with our business setup, will work remotely and doesn't cost the earth.

Also: I plan to ask when I find someone but would love to know how foreign payments are counted. I get paid into Payoneer, in USD. Do I have to translate that to AUD, and does it go by the exchange rate when I do my tax or when it gets paid? Is there an easy to use, free/very cheap accounting software I can use to track everything for this financial year, that allows the weird USD/AUD, pending payments kerfuffle to be easily tracked?

Writers' Cafe / Writing software - twig my brain?

I'm sure I saw a cloud based scrivener clone that also included tags in the outlining function for pinch points etc. can anyone tell me if I dreamed it or it exists?

Writers' Cafe / Late Payment Reports?
« on: June 19, 2016, 01:59:20 PM »
Hey guys, anyone had payment reports show up really late before? Mine are normally in by now, but I see nothing for April. I sent a ticket to Amazon who replied that Royalties don't get paid until EOM, which I already know, but they didn't address the question. I've resubmitted but heard nothing, assumedly because it's still the weekend there.

Just wondering if I should panic :) Planning to use the money on promos, and I don't want to be held up booking them.

Other Support / Changing from to .com
« on: June 14, 2016, 04:49:29 PM »
I use the Aussie store to buy and read and I have an author account attached to this as well. However, I was gifted four books that went to the .com store. I returned two for a credit but support said I'll need to swap my account over to use it.

Do I have to use a fake address to do this? I don't want to break anything trying to swap my account over, ten back again, for sake of $6!

Writers' Cafe / Review Thresholds
« on: June 09, 2016, 03:22:38 PM »
I've hit 21 reviews with a 4.5 average. Does that get me in with all/most of the promo sites? (I know Bookbub *might* consider it but can't afford them anyway, and will hopefully get more after some smaller runs)

Writers' Cafe / Hey, Data People...
« on: June 02, 2016, 03:33:14 PM »
I just saw VEVO's old list of authors who sold over 50k books, and I'm familiar with authorearnings. However, is there an up to date list of, say, "how many authors are making $2k/month"?

Im so sick of defending my career choice to others, especially close family. I'm sick of being told that only a tiny handful of authors can do this sustainably. I'm sick to hell of being told I may as well get a job stacking shelves because this will never pay off. All my answers are met with screams of bias and rose tinted glasses.

How many authors are doing it?

($1.5-2k/month would roughly equal full time work when converted to AUD. Other wise I plucked it from thin air. Any kind of similar list would help)

My third book drops in a few weeks and I'd love some thoughts on maximising the launch while I can't afford to book any promo.

I have an organic list of 60 people.
I have around 250 from a FKG that are fairly responsive.
I've got about 750 followers on Twitter.

Book two is in select, but one is out and three won't be enrolled, so permafree is an option at some point. I was thinking about dropping the book and putting all three at 99c, and letting only my organis list know. Then, raising the last book and emailing the bigger list. I also have the option of using the first book as my opt-in.

I plan to hit all the no cost promo sites for the 99c special of book one, then hit them again when it goes free - I was thinking that would happen at about one month in (would also be the halfway point between books three an four release dates).

Any thoughts on the above? Especially in regards to timing, pricing, and what sort of rank goals I should have before changing it up.

Writers' Cafe / Sales have dropped. No $$ for promo. What to do?
« on: May 19, 2016, 04:16:09 PM »
Ok, so it's not as dire as it sounds but I have an irrational fear of my books plummeting to the depths of the algos and rotting there for eternity. After my 2nd book dropped, both tracked around the 50k mark for what felt like ages (2-3weeks), but page reads have disappeared and sales have flatlined for the last almost-week. Book three *could* be pushed out in 3 weeks time, depending on betas and editors, and I DO plan on having it out ASAP. I've also started #4 in series.

I know what you're all going to say: chill the hell out and sit the F* down. Why is that so damn hard to do!? Knowing patience is the key and actually having patience are not the same thing, apparently.

Seriously, though, my 1st book goes out of select in 5 days. Are there ways to leverage that to bump things up while I wait for book 3 to drop? I'm going to plop it straight into MC as my welcome gift and mention the freebie on my everywhere, but are there any little, free actions that people have taken that helped out?

So I've set up payoneer and there's now actual money in it (yay)! I've also ordered the prepaid mastercard. Am I able to draw money off the mastercard, into paypal, then drop that in my bank? I'm trying to avoid both the $50 wire transfer fee AND the minimum $200 withdrawal threshold if possible :)

Also for the aussies who have the card, roughly how long did it take to arrive?

Writers' Cafe / Serial Covers
« on: April 20, 2016, 02:29:31 PM »
How/where do you source them, knowing that a) money will be spent on more than one (I'm thinking closer to 4-5) before making a cent, and that you'll potentially need a LOT that all tie in together.

I know that the structure of serials means I can re-use the cover and just change the title, but I'm still going to need a bunch that tie in visually. I'm going with SF, so it'll probably be a spaceship, needed in various positions to be slapped on a background. I guess what I'm looking for is that magic combo of cheap, repeatable and reliable, without sacrificing too much quality (though a higher end redo would be looked at once the serial is funding itself).

Any suggestions?

Writers' Cafe / Does Amazon promote based on reviews?
« on: April 17, 2016, 05:56:52 PM »
This horrid meme keeps floating round and I'm 99% sure it's false, saying that at 50 reviews, Amazon will start 'promoting your book'. 25+ gets you in also boughts (which doesn't even make SENSE) and 50+ gets you spotlighted in emails.

I know it's wrong, but I'm a lone voice in a crowd of "It's a meme and MEMES ARE TRUE". Can anyone point me to some good links debunking this, and the idea that reviews factor into ranks?

Writers' Cafe / How far to FAST
« on: April 13, 2016, 05:14:13 AM »
I asked a variation of this question ages ago. How long did it take before you noticed your speed pick up? I think it's still a good question, because I was caught between wanting so much to be a speedster but not being able to write as fast as my head wanted to. I'm almost a year into my journey and have some great stats, so I thought I'd share.

April 2015. Set a camp nano goal of 30k words, made 16k. I was super excited to get 500 very messy words from a 20-minute sprint.

August 2015. Aimed lower for camp nano at 15k. Made 30k. Up to 600 fairly clean words in a 20-minute sprint.

November 2015. Working from an outline for the first time (about a sentence per scene). Made my 50k goal and reaching for 800w/20m. Much easier to write for longer stretches and when not in the mood.

This week: Discovered a new sprinting platform and teamed up with someone who's VERY close to my speed. Got a very messy 1000w/25 minutes, four times in a row (always over 1k by 6-12 words). Realised I'd not been pushing myself lately and have been averaging 2k/hour every session since then and in a week, I can already see it getting cleaner.

In a year, I've doubled my speed but also formed the stamina to write for longer as well. I've learned that I work best with some kind of competition, and graphs rock my world (the site I used was and it gives a real time word count, graph and star system to allow you to race others). I've learned I can increase my capabilities faster than I think.

I'm on track to rip out a good 80k in 37 days for this book, so I'm getting slowly closer to that illustrious one-a-month club, though we'll see how long the edits take on this one! If you'd told me a year ago I'd be knocking out this sized book in that amount of time, I'd have thought you were crazy.

If anyone else has some stats to share, please do. I'm always up for some inspiration!
