Writers' Cafe / Managing Pen Names
« on: April 17, 2017, 08:16:00 AM »
I'm half way done with the second book in my first trilogy (Dark/Epic Fantasy) and have the third well along in the plotting process. Now I'm working through my options of which series to start after these are done.

I have a Military SF and a Paranormal Romance both plotted and written to about the 10K stage, and I'm excited to start both. I'm leaning towards the Paranormal, both because it would be a shorter book (80K as opposed to the Mil SF's 100K) and quicker to write.* The SF, though, would cross over pretty well with the audience for my current books where the Paranormal definitely would not.

For those of you who write in two very different genres, can I ask:

  • Do you find using a pen name helps / not using one hurts?
  • Do you keep the pen name an "open secret" for Zon purposes and use a single website or duplicate up on everythiing?
  • How do you manage in terms of productivity? Does releasing only half as often for each pen name impact on reader engagement?

Being very new and very, very prawny, I'm inclined to spread my net as widely as possible to see where I might get a nibble.

*NB I'm not saying that Paranormals are easier to write than SF. In the case of these two books, though, being 10K into each I know both that the words flow faster and I need to do a lot less ongoing research.

Writers' Cafe / Question about cover art
« on: November 11, 2016, 06:19:18 AM »
I've just received my first proof for the cover art for my first novel and I love it. The feeling is exactly what I wanted and the artist is excellent.

I had a couple of specific issues, though, about elements that didn't match my story (image character is right handed, my MC is left, image character holds a sword, my story only has knives etc.). For those of you who have done this a time or two, how much deviation between cover and story are you prepared to accept? Is it an important issue or am I being pedantic?

Writers' Cafe / Noob question -- Character List
« on: October 23, 2016, 05:10:06 AM »
I'm preparing to launch my first novel next month, and it's currently with my editor for a final pass.

She's come back with a recommendation that I include a list of characters and also a list of world-specific terms. I can see the point of this in the print version, but I can't see how it would work when reading on a Kindle.

Any advice? Would this be useful, and if so should I include it at the front or the back?

Writers' Cafe / Blurb help please -- Epic Fantasy first release
« on: September 29, 2016, 12:09:24 PM »
I'm preparing to press the button on my first novel, a 100K epic fantasy, and all help will be very gratefully received. I can't help but feel that the blurb is very vague in terms of actual action points -- should I include more actual detail?

Breag will do whatever it takes to go home. Even if he has to take it from somebody else.

Forced into exile, Breag wanders the roads of the Tiarna Beo searching for a Lost Seed, the prize that will return all that was taken from him. But when he discovers that the girl he saved on a whim is one of the Seed, his only option is to offer her life as a ransom for his future.

Meanwhile Carad struggles to hold his place in the Brotherhood of the Lone Man, an organisation dedicated to the bloody annihilation of any they see as less than human. Carad has just one chance to belong, a brutal duty that will set him on a collision course with Breag and his companions. After a lifetime on the outside, Carad is not prepared to fail no matter what winning demands of him.

In a world ravaged by war, where blood and memory run deep and betrayal is an inevitability, how far will a man go to get what he wants?
