Fire Talk / Re: Silk Browser Share function on Kindle
« on: March 20, 2018, 06:13:46 AM »
You don't give,a lot to go on, like , what model/ age, when it stopped working and if you installed anything about this time.

BUT if i had to hazard a guess, Pinterest has its own share function and may well have overridden the other functions to promote its self.
SO,,,, either use the Pinterest function to share you stuff, or remove Pinterest and see if the general function returns

If it does turn out to be Pinterest, there may be a setting with in that, to change priority, but i don't use it, so you will need to explore that yourself

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Connecting Paperwhite to Internet via a Mac's WiFi

I haven't connected to a mac, but have to multiple of other hot spot devices and ut seem a relatively fool proof process! Turn on your hot spot, click on it on the kindle and enter password. You are using the correct password, always worth checking before you go further

There is a,rather obvious question of why if you have,a router and home internet, you don't just log on to that and not the mac?

Simple problem solving would suggest that you should log the kindle on to another connection and log another device on to the mac, to see which if either is giving the problem.

I'm aware that kindles don't work optimally on 5ghz WiFi, but they do work generaly, perhaps that is part of the issue?

What happens and what notifications occur when you try to connect

That message generaly means your password is incorrect or not there at all, that's what mine says if i try and connect to next, doors wifi :D it is your wifi your connecting to , isn't it? Maybe the update has cancelled from the memory

Have you gone as far as re entering it into the kindle? .  That should sort if  out . If not then log onto another wifi, public access, your friends, make a hot spot on your smart phone, to see if it works elsewhere, which will then point the finger at the router

always worth turning your router on and off, as like all computers its,a good idea every so often to reset them

Just to add, its sensible to buy an " exspebsive battery from a known distributor, in person or through their web site and not a,cheap one from the unknown source that frequenting eBay ect,
There are two reasons for this, one, the fact that lithium batteries have an unfortunate habit of bursting in to flames, the only thing stopping this from happening is the quality of the control circuits abd the batteries them selves, lithium batteries are fairly cheap, good quality batteries and , good quality control circuits are not, AND far more commonly, there is a tenancy to massively over state the capacity of the battery, which is very difficult to verify with out test equipment. A half or even a quarter of the claimed out put is quite likely.

Even with major retailers there is commonly an over statement of capacity, they quote an output in mh based on3.6 volts but give an actual output of 5volts, this effective makes the real capacity about 25%less

Anything Else Amazon / Re: Kindle App run on Nook?
« on: February 07, 2018, 07:06:30 AM »
Anyone know if the Kindle app will run on a Nook? My pen name has readers asking if her books come on Nook, but they don't because they're in Kindle Unlimited. I would love to be able to tell her she can just run the Kindle app.

I don't know, but they should, if both items are android. Just as google apps will run on a kindle, though just like google apps on an Amazon product they may not run as well or have the exact functionality.

Only one way to find out!

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Oasis 2 battery life
« on: February 06, 2018, 11:02:42 AM »
I'm not sure a reset, will help with battery life! It's a,simple product of the the mw/ hours of the battery minus the mw/ hours your use extracts from the battery. As above blue tooth and WiFi will run a battery down very quickly, indexing a lit of matterial will have an effect, as will lamp brightness. Actually turning off between use will extend it quite a lot. That said once a week for charge doesn't seem unreasonable and batteries tend to get better after a few charges, so it might buck up in a week or so

Batteries come in more or less the following " sizes" 2500 mw/h, 5000mw/ h and a 1000mw/h ( give or take a few MW) as a rule of thumb 2500 will charge a phone battery once, from empty to full. 5000, will charge a kindle once to full and a phone twice. Therefore it follows that a 1000 will charge a kindle twice.

However if your kindle battery is jiggered, it may well lose charge almost as fast as it gains it and you may need a,1000 mw/h just to keep up.

There is not really a Great difference in price from the bottom to the top, it really just the physical sieze that you need to carry with you that's the deciding factor

I discovered,, by accident, that,a,crisp ( chips as the Americans call them) packet is exactly the same, size as a 7'  fire, so that it fits, snuggly inside, giving abrasion protection when carrying. Alternatively they fit quite well in a jiffy bag if you want to impact protection

« on: January 16, 2018, 06:33:40 AM »
I have been noticing that my Voyage battery was needing to be charged too often.  Then I turned on Airplane mode.  I think the reader goes out to Goodreads, etc if you have Airplane turned off which uses up a charge.  It is much better now - altho I decided to trade it in for the new Oasis.

I think the batteries are a bit underspected for them to be honest, but then they are for the vast majority of devices, they keep making them smaller and lighter and cheaper and something has to give.

Your right about airplane mode, it will make a notable. Difference to battery life, but every thing you have turned on runs down the battery, even having auto rotate enabled bites in to battery life. Particularly you have to watch the number of apps running in the back ground, which seems t be most of them, even the kindle installed apps are buzzing away taking charge, for no good reason, even more so if you have a,selection of self installed apps, and more so again if these are side loaded or google apps. If you let it get out of control the thing can go flat in a couple of hours with out use

Thanks Jobo.  I just thought I was missing a setting or something.  I like the ease of es player fine, just missing the album art.

Yes i use it a fair bit, but am slowly being converted to the vcl player, as it has better picture/ sound quality and has in screen adjustments for sound and brightness, plus a much easies. Fast forward/ back function

Nb, there is really no need to go back to factory settings unless there is a,serious software  problem, you can get the same result, by getting rid of  hungry apps that run in the background  and running one of the many utilities that clean unwanted clutter off the device

Um, we do pay more. We purposely paid for a subscription to let us upload our songs. We didn't expect anything for nothing. We paid for that feature. I have no clue what you even go on about.

So yes, you are still not getting it, sorry.

Just look at the maths, Amazon sell you a,speaker that should cost say200 dollars for 100 dollars, they then need you to buy 100 dollars of content before they make a profit, you paying 26 dollars a year to play our own content and not buy Amazon content doesn't make any sence to them. It will take them four years just to break even and that's with out the cost of the cloud service to them

They have clearly sold the device. With this promise and are now taking it away to max their profits.

That is sharp practise, or a bad miscalculation in the first place, but its what they do to some extent on all their devices

Buying Amazon devices only makes sence if you don't want to play your own content or you are techy enough to get round the restrictions. People who want point and play of their own content need to pay 300 dollars in the, first place to get the google device and avoid all Amazon product

Anything Else Amazon / Re: Amazon music storage bad changes....

I don't think you are understanding my post. Its not about not losing the songs. I have them backed up. Course I could lose all those if all my backups break down.
Its about playing it easy off my playlists, mixed in with my purchased stuff. The amazon player has whatever sound that comes through my receiver. I listen via my stereo and my fire TV using Alexa. I don't listen to music on portable devices. Just my big speakers. If I can't play those songs along with my other songs, it ruins my music experience. So yes, its stupid of them to stop that service. Especially the not telling any of us subscribers about it. Its more than 250 songs now, some of the "songs" are actually ripped full LP's that are also not available in the US or not available at all anymore anywhere.

I think you are misunderstanding mine! Amazons business model is to sell these devices at a lot less than their competition, some of these things are sold at less than it costs to make them. And then to make their profit from selling services, such as music or films or books. The. Echo is a third of the cost of the google version.

The cost of the cheap device is that you are largely tied to Amazon content, or that using non Amazon content is varrying shades of awkward, so awkward that you give up and use th Amazon content. There is no profit to Amazon if every one up loads there mp3s they got from elsewhere and most people won't throw out there echo and go and play three times more for another player, so they have. Got you hooked !

There, are a numbers. Of ways to consider this, strategy

1) decided that Amazon is unfair and pay more for your equipment to get the the option of using your own content

2) take the model at face value and find another way of playing your songs

3) or take the, cheap equipment and put some time and where effort in to defeating amazons restriction

What you can't do is take advantage. Of the subsidy AND have the same convenience of use as if you had paid far more

Amazon would just go bankrupt is they keep selling devices at a loss with out selling you content

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: How Long Do Your Kindle Ereaders Last?
« on: January 12, 2018, 05:34:29 AM »
The answer to the question is it depends on usage, all the components are tested and guaranteed for so many cycles or hours of use, and once you exceed that, they will most likely soon lose efficiency or just stop working.

Think its fair to say that Amazon haven't used d the best quality components, certainly the battery, sound card/ speaker, screen and cpu are substandard when compared to high end devices.

The more you use them or the harder you use them the sooner they will reach the point of unreliability. If you use them mostly for low resource tasks like book reading, then you should get many years out of them, if you are constantly playing vids or music, then the screen will loose resolution, the cpu will lose efficiency and the sound card may pack up in not that long .

Batteries are temperamental, they can quickly loose efficiency and not give the required voltage, though still maintaining a charge, that will slow everything down. It's much better for battery life if you avoid leaving them on charge for hours/ days and do not make a habit of running them to flat

It's the McDonald's app, it's very good, gives really good deals. I've been using it on my Fire for quite a while, saved a lot of money with it, gotten a lot of free stuff. But my Fire is two years old, was getting gummed up (wouldn't load my Kindle books anymore) so I did a factory reset which worked great, sped the Fire back to good as new. But when I re-loaded the McDonald's app it now won't detect my location which is necessary for it to show me the deals available. So it's hopeless? Just 'cause the Fire's two years old I can't have my McDonald's app anymore? Dang. :'(

If you had told me that . Yesterday, you may well have. Had a free burger or two by. Now.

You need to turn on , location based services, which are under the wireless, settings

Why would they do a stupid thing like that. I have a bunch of song stored on there I like to play all the time via the Fire TV and my stereo. I do pay for the 250000 song plan, although I don't have even close to that many. Just more than 250. I am confused, so will it stay there for me if I keep paying the fee or go away regardless in January 2019.

And where else am I suppose to put my music now.

I have songs that cannot be purchases on Amazon. They just aren't available, not really on any american service.  :(

Unfortunately everything on that link above is way above my paygrade and for geeks. I need plug and play. I don't have any clue about a server and I don't have a computer to keep on all the time anyway which is needed for that. I can't get plex to work if my life depending on it, I have tried for years on roku. I don't even see it on the fire. And I don't have a google home and don't want to . I have an Echo and dot already.

Its not even about the money, if they had all that stuff on the amazon music thingie I would do it. But the stuff I uploaded is just not available. Those are my german CD's, german 80's mp3s and such. They do not exist in the american music market period. There are other obscure things that were never available on the american market on my account. Now I got to figure out how to download all that rare stuff and were to download it too.

Think you are being a might over,dramatic!250 songs is only a gig or two of storage, you can store them on an SD card or a memory stick or your kindle, or an mp3 player or all four, if you want to make sure you don't lose them

The real issue, is you will have. Difficulty playing them on the Amazon player, which isn't that big a deal as its not got that good sound qualify. Another blue tooth speaker, a music player, play them through your TV or head phones and your fine

Nb i think you can blue tooth or hard wire them from your kindle to the dot speaker? It's he echo that awkward
