The Book Corner / Re: Time travel novel suggestions

I would guess it's because not everybody is familiar with every book published every year.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm surprised (or missed) why no one mentioned "All Our Wrong Today's" by Elan Mastai one of my favorite books from last year.

Try turning your Fire off then back on to "clear" memory before installing. May or may not help.

One of the first things I tried.

Fire Talk / Latest Kindle App Issue
« on: November 05, 2017, 04:40:32 AM »
Is anyone else having problems? The latest Kindle App will download, but then fail to install. I've tried about 6 times over the last several days.

If you like Douglas Preston. (Pendergast Series) This is available for 2.99 for a limited time. New addition with over 100 photographs.
His "Lost City of the Monkey God" is also excellent. These are true modern adventure  stories with lots of history.

Fire Talk / Re: Kindle Fire 7 vs 8 HD
« on: July 05, 2017, 04:24:11 PM »
I've purchased 3 HD8's in the last 6 months, that replaced older Fires. Everyone really likes them. We all have laptops that are our primary workers/surfers. I use mine for USA Today and the Washington Post. I guess I'm in the minority in that I prefer reading on it compared to my Voyage. My wife does Facebook, and FB games, and it is her only reader. I've streamed video/TV shows on it and was impressed with the speed and image. If all depends on your needs.

To add to the above:

After reading through the 28 pages on the XDA forum it appears that the app should update itself.
I used the original files from the links. (Did not use the newer versions)

When I downloaded the files I copied each one in a separate folder labeled: 1 Google Account Manager, 2 Google Services Framework, 3 Google Play Services, 4 Google Play Store, so as to not confuse myself when installing the files in the correct order.

I then copied the folders as per gmercator's instructions (didn't use any file managers). Then open each folder in the Fires Docs app to find the apk files and
continued following gmercator's instructions.

I opened Play Store, signed in and downloaded Total Commander for future use.

The whole process was fairly simple.
Thanks again gmercator.

I'll post back with any issues and if/when it updates.

Thanks for the good instructions.

I haven't tried it yet, and have a few questions. When downloading the 4 apk files did you use the latest's ones or the exact ones linked on the first page? Two (2) of the files say there is a newer version available. Are the 4 files related (I know they all work together but I mean like in a certain version that needs to stay together)?

Note: when files are copied to folders they may be rearranged, so the first file copied may not be the first listed in the folder.

So, in a couple months when all the apk files have new versions, what would be the upgrade path? Delete everything from the Fire and start over?

I'm still reading through the pages of the XDA forum so if I find out any answers I'll post back.

Fire Talk / Re: Cases for new Fire HD 8" 2016?
« on: December 05, 2016, 04:19:47 AM »
I just bought an "All-New Fire HD 8" (2016 6th Gen).
I picked up a Fintie Folio case for it. While it is nice I would prefer one that would stand up in portrait mode like this one I had for my old Fire.

It doesn't appear that Marware make one for the newest Fire. Anyone else find a portrait case that they like?

I recently got a Voyager and was wondering the same thing. You might get a quicker answer in the "Lets Talk Kindle" forum. Another problem I have is when I go to use the dictionary the type is so small I can't read it.

Voyager 50 off . Picked one up after missing the sale earlier this year. Paperwhite and the newest Kindle are also on sale. Looking forward to reading on a dedicated e-reader again. I've been reading on my Fire for the last 2 years after getting rid of my DX.
But now the Finte case someone recommended is not available.

Does anyone remember if any Kindles (E-readers or Fires) were on sale last year on primeday?

Ann, if you haven't read it, you would probably love "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr.

One of my favorite reads this year.

This will also be in the new book "The Bazaar of Bad Dreams" out November 3rd. A collection of short stories.

Sorry, I was in rush when I posted, couldn't remember the name of the author and didn't have time to look it up. It's the one by Michelle Paver; set in the far north of Norway deep in the Arctic Circle. Here's the link to the US Amazon kindle version (though it's pricey for an e-book):
Thank-you, but now it shows it's not available as a Kindle e-book.

I found The Historian genuinely creepy in parts, and loved Dark Matter- the sort of story that made me reluctant to turn off the bedside lamp.
Which Dark Matter do you mean? Peter Straub?

I use the app everyday, on my one hour commute home, and haven't had any issues with it.

By the way, I see that the late Sir Terry Pratchett's Night Watch is on that list. If for some reason I could only have one Discworld book for the rest of my life, this is the one I'd choose; so anyone who's at all interested but doesn't yet own it: buy it!  8)

I know nothing of Discworld. Can this be read as a stand alone book or is it  part of a series?
