Tips, Tricks, and Troubleshooting (Kindle) / Re: Convert from PDF
« on: January 15, 2018, 10:35:56 PM »
Unfortunately I didn't have time to try any more conversion experiments before going away on holiday. I ended up switching to landscape view, which made the pdf text a bit easier to read.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Tips, Tricks, and Troubleshooting (Kindle) / Convert from PDF
« on: December 26, 2017, 01:11:51 AM »
I have some software manuals in PDF format that I am trying to convert to a suitable format for a Kindle reader. I have tried 2 online converters so far (pdf2kindle and online-convert) and they both give similar results. The text in the PDF is on 2 columns on each page, but the converter has ignored the column structure and has alternately read a line from each column. How crazy is that! Is there a better converter somewhere?

By the way, I wouldn't care too much if the converter ignores images and just ends up with the text in the resulting document. But the text needs to be decently formatted and legible.

Mispronouncing words because you've only ever read them.

Here's a comedy sketch on that theme:

Did you recently order a new device?

I haven't ordered any new device.

I've now been through the tedious process of deleting the unwanted items one by one.  I hope they don't return.

Suddenly my Kindle library now contains 17 additional items, Kindle Guides in different languages, all apparently added yesterday.  Why?

If I delete them, will they return or not?

The problem came back again today, but this time a reboot didn't fix it.

It would be useful if there was an option to turn off hyperlinks in the device settings.

Rebooting fixed the problem.  Thanks.

Forum Announcements & Tips / Re: Reading Page won't accept ASIN

...ASINs are assigned consistently across Amazon's country-specific domains - but a publisher can evidently choose to not set them up that way... ...some titles can be available in one region and not another...

I looks as though this must be commonplace.  It applies to 4 of the 12 Kindle books that I have purchased so far.

Maybe there should be something on the product page to indicate that different versions of the product will be displayed according to the user's location.  Users who post links to a webpage normally assume that everyone can see what they see.

Note that, currently, the Kindle PaperWhite is NOT available unless you get the more expensive model that includes 3G as well as WiFi...

Maybe they are not available from Amazon, but they are still around.  My non-3G Paperwhite was purchased within the last month.

When you put the PW to sleep the light should go out.  If it doesn't, do a restart; that will likely fix it. (menu/settings/menu/restart OR hold the switch for 30-40 seconds until you see it reboot.)

Thanks, I'll try that when I get home.

...are you holding the power button down for about 30 seconds? I think that's the only way to shut it off.

A few seconds, maybe 4 or 5.  Certainly nothing like 30 seconds.

After 3 weeks of use, my Kindle Paperwhite now won't power down properly, i.e. the light stays on after turning the device off.  Instead of turning it off I now just leave it on all the time and activate the screen saver when it is not in use.  A permanent blank lit screen would probably drain the battery as well shorten the life of the device.

Thanks.  These work in the Reading Page, although  I get nothing when I search for those ASINs for the site.  The cover designs are completely different too.  They look similar to the hardback editions.

Where does it say that that these books are unavailable?  The "Buy now" button is displayed on the page in both cases.

The only alternative editions listed are hardback, paperback, audio, etc., i.e. not Kindle.

I purchased them both from the US site earlier this month.

I'm trying to create a Reading Page, but it won't accept some of the ASINs, e.g. B007UK83S4 and B00ABLJ0WW.
