Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Kindle Paperwhite 4 rumor!!

Hmmmm. Interesting. I've never had a problem with the whiteness of the screen but, whatever.

I guess we'll see in a few months!
I never really had a problem with the tint of any of my Kindles either... currently using the Oasis 2. But I do have the nook Glowlight 3 with blue light filter and I use the filter on the auto setting. This slowly reduces blue light throughout the day. By 5 or 6pm it's completely sepia. Or almost Orange. I like the effect. Its comforting and they say it's better for sleep paterns but I dont know how true that is. I DO get a good night's sleep most of the time but that remains true whether I use my Oasis, nook or iPad.

I'm all for changes to the Kindle that may make it healthier to use, but skeptical, also, that it might just be a gimick...

My hope is really for a substantially thinner design. I'll probably get one no matter what though... just to test it out.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Oasis 2 doesn't want to sync

Isnít there an option to display downloaded content only, and one to display all content... could you possibly be displaying only whats already downloaded? Hmmm... I also had the problem a few times where I go to sync and it gets stuck on ďconnectedĒ and doesnít sync but a restart fixes it every time... anyway, try and see if itís set to display all items or just downloaded ones and then set it to all and tap them manually to install them... hope that helps. I think the option is in the upper left corner of your library screen. Also are these books or magazines/newspapers or what? If not books that could be an issue also...

Looks like Merlot is the only one sold out. The rest can be ordered it seems. [emoji16]

I was on the website today and saw all the variations of the leather and the waterproof cases available to order if Iím not mistaken...

I have the Saddle Tan leather case and actually I really love it! At first I didnít think the stand feature was working very well but itís growing on me... I tried it again a few times and as long as Iím careful not to bend it too far or not far enough it works reasonably well... that was my only complaint with the case initially and now that Iíve gotten used to how that feature works, I really have no complaints.

I have not found that the magnet is too weak, and the Oasis 2 has not fallen out once for me. I do think that everyone has a right to express their opinion and those reviews/reports do help people make good buying decisions but I also think itís a shame that Amazon had to stop selling the covers for whatever reason... I hope they fix whatever issues were going on for some people and start selling them again. In the meantime if you want the case now Iíd try the B.B. website.

Okay, I guess you could say my last post was true first impressions as I'd only had the O2 for an hour or so, but I thought now that I've had it a few days, I'd do a more thorough job.

I'm still enchanted. The screen is perfect. One of the things I didn't much care for on the Voyage was the blindingly white screen. The softer cream tone of the O1 is much better for me, and this O2 is like that too. The extra size of the screen is wonderful and to me seems more than kinda sorta or slight. I get an extra 2 or 3 words per line and an extra 3 lines per screen, and I keep mine at the middle setting for line spacing.

I love that there's a setting to make the font bigger on the Home screen (and give the battery as a percentage).

My Fintie case only came today, so I used the O2 without a case for several days and had no trouble holding it, although I can't hold any Kindle for long periods any more. It seemed as if for someone whose hands aren't a problem it would be quite comfortable. Didn't seem either cold or too slippery for that to me.

Where it did seem too slippery was when I put it down anywhere except on a totally flat surface like a table. I have a bad habit of putting mine down on the arm of my recliner, and the O2 reacted as if on a ski slope when I did that.

The buttons don't seem loud to me. I held it right to my ear and could hear a faint click on the upper button, nothing on the lower. Admittedly those are my Donald Duck ears, but I had my hearing aids in. :)

The auto light adjustment works, which it never did for me on the Voyage, but I've turned it off. It seems I like to rest a hand every so often on the upper right-hand corner where the sensor is. I tried turning it upside down so the sensor was at the bottom, but that put the sensor into the stand I use so it couldn't work. Now that I have a case, I may try that again and see if the case holds it high enough in the stand that the sensor is clear.

Another half dozen swipes to wake will undoubtedly have me forking over the extra $20 to get rid of the SO. I shouldn't have even pretended to myself I'd be able to stand them for long.

The audio stuff is of no interest to me, so I have no opinion there. Ditto Goodreads integration. I tried the reverse screen just to see what it looked like, and it looked clear and well done, but it's not something I'd ever use either.

It's fast. It seems to me not only faster for things like page turn but that books download faster too, which has to be my imagination because that's up to the wifi, right?

I like the buttons more than those on the OA1, which always seemed unnecessarily high to me.

It is noticeably heavier than the OA1 and the Fintie case makes it even more so (I'm going to report on the case in the Accessories thread), but since I don't plan on hand-holding it often or for long that doesn't matter to me. I've always been so worried about losing a Kindle if I take it out and about I've never taken my newest and favorite out with me, so the OA1 will now be the one that goes places anyway. I traded my Voyage to Amazon before ordering the OA2.

The original partial charge already on the device when I got it did drain fast, but since then (after a restart and complete charge where it sat for a couple hours after 100%, it seems good to me - better than my OA1 in its cover, but I never timed either one and can't be sure. Maybe if the OA1 didn't start complaining about low battery when the device itself still has hours of charge, that wouldn't be true.
Nice review!! I think there are two ambient light sensors one on the top of the two page turn buttons and one on the bottom. But I know what you mean. I was always covering one or the other by accident so stopped using that feature on the Oasis 2...

Let's Talk Kindle! / Re: Oasis 2 vs. Nook GL 3... (impressions)
« on: November 12, 2017, 08:19:21 AM »
Yeah, I was very tempted by the Aura One when it first debuted last year and I'm sure it's more premium than the Nook Glowlight 3 from what I've read about it and seen in videos. I was most interested in the Aura One for it's 8" screen and night-mode features as opposed to the waterproofing although waterproofing IS always nice to have just in case... My main reason for not getting the Aura One last year, in addition to it always being out of stock I've heard, is that I already have an extensive nook and Kindle collection and I didn't want to complicate things with yet another account to manage and device to carry around. Now that my Kindle Oasis is 7" and my nook has night-mode, I have even less reason to go for the Aura One. But you're right, those two (the Oasis 2 and Aura One) are probably a more appropriate comparison in terms of being a better match against one another.

Probably my favorite aspect of the new Oasis is it's design and build quality... especially it's design though. I've always liked asymmetrical designs on electronics and with the original Oasis having slim bezels on three sides and the Oasis 2017 having even slightly thinner bezels, I have been very impressed with both! Also the new Oasis's metal design and the fact that they ditched the mandatory cover is a big plus. I was a fan of the battery being in the cover but it was also a pain not being able to use third party covers or use the Oasis without a cover at all for very long without sacrificing the majority of the battery life in the process...

I was also very tempted by the Aura One for another reason too... the Overdrive integration that I think you were referring to when you mentioned "one touch book rentals" from libraries. I have used Overdrive to borrow ebooks for my Kindle through my Amazon account and linked to my library card but it IS a roundabout process to say the least. Also I'm not a fan of how the ebooks I have borrowed stay visible in my Kindle library even though they are irretrievable without borrowing them again from the library. I wish they were listed in their own separate section on the Kindle as opposed to mixed in with all my other "All Items" ebooks cluttering everything up with ebooks I can no longer access. Maybe this is handled differently on Kobo?? That would be good...

As far as ecosystem is concerned, I can't speak for Kobo but I find the Nook ecosystem to be pretty good actually. When I'm looking for a particular book it's usually available on both Amazon and Barnes and Noble's websites. Where I find B&N lacking is in their collection deals, ie. buy 20 books for $2.99 kind of things... LOL... I have many a collection from Amazon that I got for great prices that way and nook just doesn't seem to offer that kind of deal very often. But usually the popular books I'm looking for show up on both websites when I'm checking for the best price and I try to go for whichever site has it for less money.

Let's Talk Kindle! / Oasis 2 vs. Nook GL 3... (impressions)

I got the Oasis 2017 on the 31st of October and the Nook Glowlight 3 on the 8th of November (both on their respective release days). Now that I've had time to run them through their paces, I thought I'd share some first impressions of how they compare to one another. If anyone has any questions about either device or your own thoughts on them let me know.

First of all, the new nook's page turns feel painfully slow compared to the new Oasis. It's not a deal breaker but it's a definite advantage of the new Oasis. It makes me really appreciate that aspect on the Oasis...

Secondly, in the nook's favor, it has a night mode with a blue light filter that's almost completely orange by default but can be adjusted and can be set to either auto or manual. I have it set to auto and it gradually gets more and more orange throughout the day. By 5pm it seems completely orange.

Then there's the auto brightness on the new Oasis... which can be calibrated. I'm using that feature and I love it!! I wish it had a blue light filter but the ambient light sensor is a nice addition nonetheless.

The size of the New Oasis: 7" is a plus in it's favor over the Glowlight 3 IMO... more words fit on each page and that's great... less page turns/more reading...

The Glowlight now has page turn buttons which is great but the overall construction of the buttons as well as the rest of the device is inferior to the Oasis. While the new Nook has a matte finish which repells fingerprints and does a good job of it at that, it's still plastic and not waterproof and a step down even from the 2015 Glowight Plus also from Barnes and Noble...

And last but not least, the design of the new Oasis wins hands down IMO... I love that asymmetrical design with the larger frame on one side for the page turn buttons and the thinness of that screen on it's thinnest point.

Overall I think the Oasis 2017 wins it, by a large margin but keep in mind that it's over double the price of the Nook GL 3... I'm not sorry I bought the Nook though. Half my ebook collection of over 200 books is on nook so it's really a necessity and the last nook, the Glowlight Plus was released in 2015 I believe, and getting a little long in the tooth...

Oh let me not forget battery life: both devices are performing admirably.... and screen uniformity does not seem to be an issue on either device, at least not with my units...

hello - has anyone noticed that the e-ink on the newest 2017 oasis is rather light, in comparison to the voyage?

i have the older oasis at home as well, so i will compare later when i get the chance.

but man it's been like russian roulette with these devices. idk how many returns and refurbs i've done trying to get that perfect kindle

i just got off the phone with amazon kindle support - he says their specialists says that this is the intended design  :( hazy gray ink?? ??
Have u tried the new feature that lets you increase the boldness?

Well it's been about a week now since I got my Oasis 2017. I just wanted to update my original first impressions.

I had reported to you all that in the first hour of using my new Oasis there was one time that I had hit the page forward button and nothing happened. I'm happy to report that it never happened again and I have been putting this thing through it's paces all week!!! Id say I've averaged 2 or more hours a day of reading this week but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Battery is holding up great!!! Just recharged it for the first time since the initial charge. I started using auto brightness on the second or third day I had it but I calibrated it like I learned on this forum... my low is 15 and my high is 18. I like the screen to be fairly bright...

I've been using it mostly with the cover on but sometimes I take it off and lay it down next to me especially if I want to flip the Oasis upside down and don't want the Amazon logo/name in the corner of the cover to be upside down on the back.

So I have been using the new Oasis exclusively for this past week and it should be my daily driver for the foreseeable future as far as Kindles are concerned but as I stated previously half my ebooks are on nook so I plan to buy the new Nook Glowlight 3 on Wednesday this week and then start catching up on my nook library as well as reading more on my new Kindle...

Hmm. Might have another battery problem here. Charged my new Oasis all the way and left it for three hours in Airplane mode. Just turned it on and the battery is at 78%. No books are indexing.

Any ideas? Anyone else having this issue?
Might it have been doing the update? I know when any of my devices do updates it makes the battery drain a bit but then it usually goes back to normal afterwards...

I am at 83% after about 2 days worth of heavy use. But I started at 100% and had already setup the entire thing and did update while it charged.

Got mine yesterday afternoon. I like the new Oasis and all it has to offer...but I like the first Oasis a little better..I think it's the feel of the device in your hand. The 1st Oasis has a solid compact feel and this feels lighter, looser. I'm not complaining because it's lighter which is a good thing....I'm sure there is a learning curve and I will get used to it. The thing that does bother me is that I read during lunch break at work and I stand up the device on my desk. I was using my Voyage at work that has the origami cover and when I stood it up it would stand level...I got the cloth cover with this Oasis and when I stand it up it goes a little I'm reading down hill. Not very pleasant to me, it's distracting...not sure if it's because the magnet isn't very strong to keep the cover in place...I'll wait a bit and see what the secondary covers offer....or I'll use my credit card credits to get a leather cover....if anyone has the leather cover could you please let me know if the Oasis sits level when you stand it up. Thank you.
I have the leather cover (Saddle Tan) and I can tell u right now, the stand feature of this cover is basically useless to me... not sure what you mean by "level" though. Do you mean level as opposed to crooked or level as in straight up vertically?? Either way, the thing doesn't stay upright for me... it's a little crooked but the main thing is that it doesn't really feel secure. It moves a little into itself on the table and I'm afraid it will fall. Not gonna use that feature at all personally. It's a shame... I liked the one on the Voyage...

I set up my New Oasis last night but didnít get to read anything until I woke up in the middle of the night and couldnít resist! I read three chapters in this book Iím in the middle of and that took about an hour... then this morning read for about another hour in Starbucks... two more chapters down. So far so good... my initial impressions are these:

-front light is exceptional! SO even and uniform! And nice and bright at 17 with auto-adjust off.

-the design is great too... I wouldnít have thought they could improve on the premium feel of the original Oasis but IMO they have! Excellent job Amazon! The full metal frame I think is what makes the difference. And I love the cold feel of metal on electronics.. I may be in the minority there but I do....

-the leather cover in Saddle Tan is great and I havenít had any problems with it coming loose or slipping around at all yet. The magnet seems very strong to me. And Iím loving the suade feel of it. Itís very slightly worn looking but much less so than I think the walnut cover was on the original. At least from the pictures and videos I saw of it. I had the black cover for my original Oasis.

-battery only took about an hour to fill up, plus was setting up and own downloading books onto the device most of that time... after two hours or so of actual use so far it hasnít seemed to deplete much, if at all from what I can tell from the battery meter but time will tell.

-one gripe: at one point I tapped the page forward button (top for me) and it definitely clicked (both audibly and tactile wise) but didnít turn the page.... I then clicked it again and it turned immediately. Not a huge deal and probably a one time occurrence, hopefully anyway. But thought Iíd report it to you all and see if itís happened to anyone else. It doesnít really bode well on a brand new device. But we shall see...

I plan to make this my daily driver so expectations are high but Iím confident that this is a Winner! [emoji16]

For those of you moving on to the new Kindle and also own the older kindle, i'm curious if it'll become your daily driver. I own a 5" Sony and an 8" Kobo and they have become readers for specific occasions and not the main machine. This, however, is an Amazon product so i'm interested to hear if it can completely replace your 6" (or your Voyage or Paperwhite for that matter) and actually become the main reader for all of you. Anyone have any initial thoughts on how they plan to use their new Oasis?
I plan to use the new Oasis as my only Kindle for the foreseeable future, if it lives up to my expectations that is...

BUT, since the other half of my ebook collection is on nook, I guess I'll either be using my phone for nook books as I have been for a while (Galaxy S8+ w/6.2" screen)... or I may also get the new nook that's rumored to come out this Thurs. According to

I have not been using my nook Glowlight Plus that much since I got the S8+ but sometimes I switch it up for variety sake... the new nook sounds pretty awesome though...

But as far as kindle goes, this new Oasis will probably be my only device and I will keep my Voyage and Oasis 1 as backups on the shelf...

Just read that review and this caught my eye:

The other thing to note about the Kindle Oasis is that there's no "special offers". Lower tier Kindles get these adverts in exchange for a slightly cheaper price. On the Kindle Oasis you're spared that option.

I don't think that's true. The one I ordered I expect to come with Special Offers; I could have paid $20 more to get it without. Maybe the difference is they're a UK reviewer?
I don't know... I have to admit I didn't even read the review yet. But maybe they got a reviewer's edition and didn't know about the option.

interestingly I don't think same day shipping was an option. I'm sure I would have picked that if it had been. Lol... I guess it doesn't matter though since it would still be coming on the 31st most likely... just thought it was interesting.
