George Saoulidis and George Donnelly (that's George2 for short) are putting together a mosaic science fiction novel project in order to apply for a BitTorrent marketing grant.

The idea is to create an awesome group project that BitTorrent will give us a ton of money to market. We retain ownership and will devise a profit-sharing arrangement.

The project structure is similar to George R.R. Martin's Wild Cards.

We're looking for 8-15 authors to produce a chapter of 8,000 to 10,000 words each in a shared universe with some shared characters.

The exact story concept will be revealed in a private forum but it's going to be a bit cyberpunky, super-heroish and revolves around a Mass Super Empowering Event. We're going for themes BitTorrent might like, such as decentralization, liberty and fighting the man.

George Saoulidis is taking the creative lead and George Donnelly is taking the administrative lead.

To participate, please email me@georgedonnelly.com and/or glowleaf@gmail.com with the subject "Mosaic Novel," your name and author website URL by Sep 1, 2016.

We'll be looking to publish probably in December and would need the chapters by late November, giving you almost 3 months for this.

Feel free to ask us any questions. We're psyched about this!

George(s), I'm throwing my hat in the ring. I've been looking for something new to work on to snap me out of a creative funk with Book 3 and this sounds perfect. I'm preparing the e-mail.

Sounds fascinating, George! I've never done anything like this, so it intrigues me a lot. Not sure I could pull it off, so I'm going to think on it a while. I could do short, I know that much.

I think a Facebook group is probably the easiest, real-time way to interact.

This seems like a fun and interesting idea, but how are rights handled? Like, if I entered this and wrote a short story for it, would I retain all rights to that story or would someone else own it instead?

I'm asking because you say in the first post that "We will retain ownership," but I'm not sure what that means, exactly, unless that's just your way of saying that each participating author gets to keep ownership of their individual contribution, that is.

Like an anthology, individual authors will keep ownership/copyright but give the project editor first publication rights and there will almost certainly be an exclusivity period of, say, a year, during which this project would have exclusive use of the story. How does that sound?

If we go for a novel-type narrative, would the stories even work outside of context?

That's a great question. I think they could yes, they should be able to. Because the chapters will need to work as self-contained stories with 3 acts, etc.

I'm excited about this too! And we're almost full...

Seven of us just did a two-hour hangout about this. What a blast.

JT, did you email me? Sorry if I missed that. If you are still interested there is still a brief window to get in on this. Email me.
