These are my picks for who I consider to be the top ten science fiction authors of all time.  Who would you add to the list or even take off of the list in your opinion?

I'd have to include Edgar Rice Burroughs. It's hard to imagine the world of Science Fiction without him.

To me, it depends on how you define "best". For example, Arthur Clarke would make my top 10 list of most influential SF writers, but not my best writers of SF list. (Even Asimov might risk toppling off the "best writers" list, though I think I'd keep him in there just for the impact he made on me in my early SF-reading days.) If it's not a "most influential" list, then I would have to find places on it for Roger Zelazny and Iain M. Banks (purely on my personal tastes, if nothing else).

I'd have to include Edgar Rice Burroughs. It's hard to imagine the world of Science Fiction without him.

If it's a "most influential" list, then without a doubt. :)

This is all personal taste, but I feel Gibson should have made the top ten purely on the strength of Neuromancer, which created new words in the English Language and a new subgenre, and can still be found in any decent bookshop decades after it first came out.

    James Tiptree, Jr.

It could be her body of work isn't large enough for her to be considered when people make these types of lists, but she'd be in my top 10.

Yes, Gibson would be on my list.

    Also Philip K. Dick.

But any list is personal taste and value judgment.

    Just my 2 cents.

Vernor Vinge has always been one of my favorite sci-fi guys. He's a super speculator.

No argument from me. I'd say the ten you mentioned plus the honorable mentions (plus some suggested above) would encompass most of the SF greats. And if it's a personal list based on taste, who can argue anyway? ;-)

Related to the post is an inforgraphic on the best-selling (note: not necessarily the best-written) Sci-Fi books of all time:

As for the OP, I found the post to be conservative (in terms of taste, not politics). Lots of interesting writers in the field right now writing science fiction including:

    Ted Chiang
    Ken Liu
    Kelly Eskridge
    Kij Johnson
    Maureen McHugh
    Nalo Hopkinson
    Samuel Delaney

If you want older work, there's the likes of Sheri Tepper, CJ Cherryh, Joanna Russ, Kate Wilhelm, Leigh Brackett, Octavia Butler, etc.

These authors wouldn't squeeze out any on the list, but they made a big impact on me when I was younger.

James P. Hogan, doesn't get a lot of attention, but he's one of my favorites. He wrote the Giants trilogy, The Proteus Operation, and The Two Faces of Tomorrow.

Joe Haldeman wrote one of the all-time best novels, period, in The Forever War.

Harry Harrison is an undersung author who cranked out The Deathworld trilogy and Make Room! Make Room!, which was the novel basis for the movie Soylent Green.

Larry Niven wrote some major science fiction classics like Lucifer's Hammer (with Jerry Pournelle), Ringworld, the Known Space collection of books, and Footfall (with Jerry Pournelle).

I'd love to see Niven on that list -- he sure influenced me!  But he was inspired by Heinlein, and Heinlein made the list, so I can live with that.  :)

In no particular order, my list would run:

    Isaac Asimov
    Philip K Dick
    Ray Bradbury
    Brian Aldiss
    William Gibson
    Douglas Adams
    A.E. Van Vogt
    Harry Harrison
    Frederik Pohl
    Mary Shelley

Phillip K Dick would have to be on any top ten list of mine, purely because he's the sci-fi writer that had the most impact on me growing up. Also Larry Niven. And Kurt Vonnegut.

    James Tiptree, Jr.

It could be her body of work isn't large enough for her to be considered when people make these types of lists, but she'd be in my top 10.
Far too many of such lists leave Tiptree off, but she was one of the best and most influential SF writers of the last century imo. I wonder if she would be left off if the secret of her gender hadn't been revealed.
