Is it as slow as it seems to me?
« on: August 17, 2012, 06:33:12 am »
Got about 35 percent into Clash, and I felt it was slow and the story went nowhere. Anyone else feel this way?

It picked up steam at 48 percent. Just dragged until then. Ended up finishing it.

Who are your favorite characters? I can easily see a Robb and Dany fan being pretty frustruated with ACOK. Lots of Baratheon stuff early on, IIRC. Never fear, it picks up, boy does it ever!

I've got 200 pages left. Bran's my favourite character, not enough chapters. And I know he doesn't have any more until the end. :( Well, hopefully he has more in A Storm of Swords!

I was frustrated by the lack of Bran as well. It seems to be a running theme with Martin that there are always two types of chapters: The ones you can't wait to read and the ones you groan but start reading anyway. After talking with friends I have noticed that not everyone loves/hates the same point-of-view character chapters, so in a way I guess Martin is broadening the overall appeal of the story.  It doesn't make me feel any better when I turn that page and see the next chapter is a character I don't care about, though :)

There are honestly no POV characters that I don't like.  So I never had the "groan" when seeing who the next chapter is about.  However, I did miss certain characters more than others.  Wait until you get to "A Feast for Crows" - that might be your most challenging read because a number of the main characters have no chapters there at all!  :o

I have about 50 pages left now! :D

Yes, I miss certain characters while reading others, especially my favourites. But I use those to pull me through the other chapters, which are still good when there are some cool things happening. A Feast for Crows may be a tough read for me, but I'm sure the following books will be worth it. :)
