Need a new great book !
« on: January 15, 2013, 10:42:41 pm »
Can I ask this here? I hope so!? Lately I have been picking maybe one book out of 5 that makes me just not want to put it down and I would like to know some books that changed your life.. ok maybe not changed your life but that are your favorite books for the year, for your life etc.. Ok I know, I know what are my taste well I have lots of taste, from Dracula to The Help. The only thing I don't really like is Romance but that I love to read really, really good ones that do not have this perfect woman that has a flat stomach, perfect breast, every man is falling for her, smart yet seems to get herself in all sorts of trouble! lol. I guess I like more sweet romance? Is that even a real thing? Ok, so anyway I am looking for new books!

Sweet romance?  I like Jill Mansell's books a lot.  Her characters aren't always perfect and they make comical mistakes but there's always a happy ending.  They're enjoyable and quirky and not all about washboard stomachs and perfectly rounded backsides.  Her books don't change my life but they're consistently good so when I'm in a funk and can't find something I want to read, I often turn to them knowing I'll be sucked in and entertained for a bit.

This is definitely not a sweet romance, but it sure is funny and endearing. And it's a quick and easy read.

I love travel narratives and lighthearted memoirs so this one really captured me. I read the second one, Laughing Without an Accent, as well. Both are very entertaining non-fic pieces.

I am not normally into romance either but I did really enjoy the romance in this historical murder mystery series and it became one of my all time fav series:

This one also includes a bit of a romance but that is not the main theme - it was one of my fav reads from last year. It is not everyone's cup of tea because the first half is slow paced and it involves fortune telling (though again, I don't normally read "occult" novels) but I found it very moving and emotional:

Neither of the main characters in these are "perfect" or have men falling all over them.

I'm a King fan all the way through. The Stand was a powerful book with themes that affected me. Overall though I'd have to say the book that had the largest effect on me was Atlas Shrugged by Rand. Its philosophy is powerful and compelling. It is an epic philosophical journey. Although I don't agree with many aspects of the philosophy Rand presents it's still a great thought provoking read.

Kisala, have you read Imajica by Clive Barker? I think it's stunning and reread it every few years. Here's the Amazon link - it's a little pricey for an e-book. You can probably pick it up cheaper in paperback in a book store.

Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy is quite a read, if you like Victorian novels at all . . .

The Driver's Seat by Muriel Spark.  Completely fascinating and surprising.  A tale not often told and a masterful voice.  Also, it's 125 pages so if you're in a mood where you're getting bored easily, you'll be done before you can put it down.   ;)

    Thanks for reading!

Oh, I just picked up The Stand, so I'm glad to hear rave reviews!

The Little Prince was a life changing book for me. It's a very slim little novel, but it's just so lovely, and it will make you re-think what it means to be an adult. :)
