I can't pick 3 books. Maybe 3 series?

Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich
Discovery of Witches series by Deborah Harkness
The Dark Is Rising series by Susan Cooper

3 singular books though...

Riders by Jilly Cooper
Like Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Bag of Bones by Stephen King

Yup, I admit it. I'm a total genre whore, I mean, reader. I could spend all day listing my favorite series and authors. I'm a total book addict. I could pretty much lay out my entire life with what my favorite 3 books were for each year. I'm currently mainlining Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series. Thank goodness for Audible -- I can keep the book playing when I'm doing other things.

    Ringworld--Larry Niven
    Silverlock--John Myers Myers
    The Three Musketeers--Alexandre Dumas

Just going by lifetime re-reads as my guide here. I might be mistaken about #3, there are a handful of also-rans for that slot.

    Only 3? Crazy.
Dune would have to be up there.
    Probably Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
And something from childhood: The Redwall series. Maybe it wouldn't be my favourite if I read it again, but as a kid I was mad for those critters.

20,000 leagues under the sea - Jules Verne
Stephanie Plum, any one- Janet Evanovitch
    Odd Thomas - Dean Koontz

The third would probably change on a daily basis depending on mood, for either Raymond E Feist, Keri Arthur, Steve Berry or ...... Lol

Or maybe an Arthur c Clarke! Maybe I'll come back to this  :D

So many books, and only three for this list... my first thought it to go highbrow and impressive with classics that I love.  But I realize that the books I keep returning to for inspiration are:

    Harry Potter
    Lord of the Rings
The Ocean at the End of the Lane

I also need to throw in Stephen King's Changing Seasons but only for two out of the three stories in it- Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Body.

HP and LOTR contain magic- and I don't mean they deal with magic.  They contain that emotional magic that makes you as a reader want to live there.  You want to BE a part of these worlds.  At least, I do.

Gaiman and King are the masters of character.  I know these people.  I could sit down and have a chat with them.  They are drawn so finely but with so few descriptions.  The story plotlines are not the greatest but I care about these people and I get that feeling of immersion when reading these books.
    It's all spider food now

A question that is impossible to answer, but I'll have a go anyway. :)

Mary Renault: The Alexander Trilogy (Fire From Heaven, The Persian Boy, Funeral Games)
Maurice Druon: Les Rois Maudits (all seven of them -- there is an English translation: The Accursed Kings)
Robert M. Pirsig: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

And of course almost everything by Shakespeare.
