How come some users have larger avatars?
« on: October 19, 2009, 05:51:11 pm »
In this thread, Malweth has an avatar that 105x160 px. When I try an image that size, it gets scaled to 100x100. I'd like the larger avatar if possible, how do I do it?

I tried linking to an image on my Photobucket account and directly uploading an image.

Malweth has an avatar from the Kindleboards set of book avatars.  Apparently they can be a bit larger?  I'm going to check this out some more.

Ohhhh... I didn't even realize there were preset avatars. Can you pull some strings to get Harvey to up the size limit for non-presets?

I don't want anything drastic, but 160 looks much nicer!

Hmmm. I'm sure Harvey will see this and respond, but we sort of discussed this a while back when Harvey increased the avatar size to 100x100.

    Here's the link:
    https://www.kboards.com/index.php?topic=355.0

It may be that we can increase the size, but we'll have to change all the post level names to female authors.  ;D

Thanks for the link Betsy... I'm ignoring the last remark! =)

I'm leery about going too large with the avatars, mainly because we have to take into account screen resolutions as low as 800px in width. At that resolution the images can be very large in the display and the site starts to look like a Batman comic.

I did, though, just increase it from 64x64 to 100x100. Let's try that!

Food for thought Harvey, this being a "book" site (well, kinda) and most books are rectangular, how about leaving the width at 100 pixels, but increasing the height? 100x150 or 100x160 would be great. I like having my current book as my avatar, and that size would be perfect for a book cover.  Most single paragraph posts have some blank real estate beneath the avatar, so increasing the height limit wouldn't affect the layout much at all.

Not to mention you are already allowing that size with the preset avatars like the one shown below. Please, please, please! ;D

Well - great question 911jason. I don't really care about avatar size, but I did wonder what the differences might be. Maybe Harvey will take well to groveling & begging.  ;)

So sorry for this late response - I am coming up for air from some intensity in my day job.

I think we can increase that avatar size without a performance hit (or a clutter problem, which is the other consideration).

It will be a quick change - I'll post here when done.

Thanks, Harvey!  It looks like some of us will have to redo our avatars with increased resolution!

Our new maximum avatar size is 160x160.

Thanks Harvey! Although you might want to shrink the width a bit, my avatar now has it's own scrollbar! =)

I'm not sure why it's stretching mine though, and not any of yours?

Well, I was able to fix the proportions by uploading my image to the board instead of linking to it. However, the uploaded image limit is still at 100x100 so it's scaling it down. But here's what it looked like when I linked to the same image instead of uploading it.

Is there a setting that forces linked image avatars to the max size? Maybe that can be turned off... ? Hope I didn't cause you too much trouble asking for this Harvey! =)

Well, I did find out why I'm seeing scrollbars. I always have a bookmark sidebar open, when I close it, the scrollbars go away. I'm viewing the board at 1280x800 by the way.

Ah, that explains why mine suddenly changed.  Mine linked and I noticed it changed suddenly and looked odd...odder than usual.

Edit:  switched to uploaded version and now its fine.

Whoops. Not exactly sure why this is happening. I'm going to tinker with the avatar settings and see if it helps.

To prevent the scrolling, I reduced the max width to 140. I left the max height at 160px.
