As promised...some data on Kindle Daily Deal results
« on: July 02, 2013, 08:50:57 am »
I'll be updating this post as we get further and further away from the KDD day but here is some stuff for those that are interested in such thing.  The data from the graphs comes from Novel Rank (if you aren't using it you should - as you don't have to hit refresh every hour to see your data).  It is based off of Pacific standard time so when it turns 3:00 am EST it's midnight on the west coast and when the deal goes into effect.

The first chart shows the ranking just before the KDD.  The axis shows what day the ranking was record and the hour of the day 20=8:00 pm  5=5:00 am

As you can see I was ranked in the high 5,000 - 7,000 range before the KDD by 5:00 am the first ranking started seeing adjustments and by 10:00 am I was under 1,000.

The second graph shows that at 1:00 pm the day of the KDD I was really close to breaking 100.  The climb from 39 to 17 was pretty steady for 7 hours where I maxed out.  Sales peaked the day after at 5:00 AM pacific time.

  • Day 1 ranged from 23 - 7,851
  • Day 2 ranged from 17 - 75
  • Day 3 ranged from 104 - 210
  • Day 4 ranged from 257 -289

Very nice. Thanks for sharing the data. The charts really help. I will have to start using novel rank as well. And congratulations on the uptick in sales!

That approximately mirrored my experience with King of Swords. Maybe they have a Sword fetish? However you slice it, KDD is a game changer, at least for the day and following week or two. I heart Amazon.

It certainly is  huge boost - I'm not sure I would call it a game changer, though.  I seem to recall that a few weeks after the KDD my sales were pretty similar to what they were post KDD.  So I looked at it more along the lines of a nitrogen boost to a high-performance car rather than changing out a six cylinder for an eight.

Thanks for sharing. Another interesting stat, if you have the time and inclination, would be a tally of how many extra books you sold due to the KDD.

I'm traditionally published - so I don't get access to my sales like I did when I was self.  That being said - I've asked my publisher to relay this information and I haven't heard back yet.

Thanks for sharing that data.  Very interesting.  Now, how do you get your book selected to be a KDD?

    Thanks,

    That's the million dollar question...

Although when you ARE selected do you have to do a price reduction/sale? do they change the royalty % or anything (if you drop into the 35% rate..ugh)?

My KDD was priced at $2.99 so still in the 70% range.  But in December I had the KDD and it was priced at $1.99 and I got royalty at the 70% not the 35%.

Great to see the data, Michael!

Thanks for sharing, as it all helps fill out the canvas of what's happening out there.

Wow! What I'd give to have my USV title selected for feature!

Things that seem to tip the scales in favor of being selected for the KDD:

    - published by Amazon
    - brand name bestseller
    - regular price above $3.99
    - part of a series
    - good cover
    - good sales
    - lots of reviews
    - 4+ star average (unless published by Amazon or brand name bestseller)
    - prolific author

    Any other thoughts or observations?

Those do seem to track well with the books I've noticed.  Here is something that I've often puzzled over.  There are several books (or series) that have gotten the KDD more than once. I had it on 12/23/2012 and then again 06/29/2013.  Given how important it is to sales boosting, I'm surprised that would give it to the same title more than once.

Wow.  Now I've got to add KDD to my publishing wish list:

    1) Reach the Top 100 in the Kindle Paid Store
    2) Sell 1 million copies of my books
    3) Get an 8-figure, print-only deal from traditional publisher with rights reverting after 1 year (it could happen...)
    4) Become KDD

Okay, I won't hold my breath for the third one, but for the rest I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Get #4 and you are pretty sure to hit #1.  It is very infrequent that I don't see the KDD in the top 100.  Usually the Top 20.  "Back in the day" when the program first started and they had only one book featured it almost always meant #1 or #2.

I'm not sure why or how - but I do notice that Rosetta Books (that puts out a lot of backlist titles) get the KDD in science fiction/fantasy quite often.  I don't if it is a case of them paying some sort of premium to get more spots, or if backlist of big names is just a popular choice - but I just saw that today's KDD is yet again one of theirs.

So, if I'd named my series "War of the Swords" instead of "War of the Blades", I'd have been set? Too late now...

Just under 1 week out from KDD and I updated the graph:

I find it interesting that there are these little plateaus at various times.

Day by day breakdown is here:

    • Day 1: 23 - 7,851
    • Day 2: 17 - 75
    • Day 3: 104 -210
    • Day 4: 238 - 455
    • Day 5: 497 - 733
    • Day 6: 922 - 1,226
