The Language of Alterra
« on: June 14, 2010, 05:52:44 am »
This is a more general than Fire-heart specific, but I'll use it to kick off this book klub forum...

Archer, how do you come up with the "language" of Alterra?  If it's considered "intellectual property" and confidential, I respect that, but if not, it would be very interesting to know how you determine what things are call what.  Especially since you have words for everything from animals, to places, to plants to food...how do all those Alterran words come out of your head?  :)

Excellent question! The truth is...I rely on existing languages; primarily various forms of Gaelic, with a smattering of Icelandic, Old English, and Sanskrit!
I anglicized the names after deriving roots from 'real' languages; I expect a Welsh or Irish reader would smile at my pronunciations! Egad--I hope they aren't thinking of Jar-jar Binks, or anything!

If anyone would like an Alterran name, just ask! I'm your 'guy'!

A bit later, I'll give an example.

Very cool!  I'd actually put some of the words into the Google translator to see if it came up with anything close and there were no matches.  I guess Google doesn't know about Alterran!   ;D

So does this mean that we can all learn Alterran, just like learning Klingon?

I loved loved elfhunter but I found so many formating errors in fireheart
that I had to stop reading.  Is there a newer corrected version out that
I can download somewhere?  I re downloaded it from amazon but it
    was the same.
    Thanks

Hey there. We fixed the formatting errors...we thought. Depending on when you re-loaded, it should have been ok. However, all three books are offline as we are between publishers at the moment.
What I can do is send you a copy myself...if I can figure out the best way to export it so you can put it on your Kindle.  :D

Brew: Can you be of any help there? (He knows everything!)

If the file is an .azw format  or .mobi format, you can email it to a person, they can save it on their hard drive, then attach the kindle usb cable and from the PC you can copy (or drag and drop) the file from the PC to the documents folder on the Kindle.  It should then show up.  If not turn it off and back on.  If not turn it off by holding the switch for a count of 15 and then turn it back on.  Holding the switch that long causes a re-boot, what we do when there is new software.  Longer does a "restore to factory defaults - we normally don't want that.

    That should do it.
Brew - did I get it right?
