Firefox 3.6 and Personas
« on: January 26, 2010, 04:40:40 am »
So how many of you guys are using the new Firefox 3.6? Have you found a really good persona (theme) yet? They're really cool and easy to try out by just placing your mouse over the sample...

http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/gallery/All/Popular

I'm using this one at the moment, it's kind of boring, but nice...

You can also make your own... I'm thinking about making a USC themed persona. Any interest in a KB-themed one? =)

Yeah this is just like Aero on Vista or Windows7.
    Something you don't need.
But boy does it look good.

Most reports say that the technical goodies were in 3.5 release.
And that 3.6 is mostly cosmetic.
    But it really looks good.

    Just sayin.......

Actually, it's supposed to be 15% faster than 3.5... that's why I upgraded. The personas thing was just a nice extra. It's different than the old themes were in that personas don't change the buttons and don't require a restart. I haven't noticed any difference in performance since installing either.

Thanks for this post! For the last few months I've been using Safari, because FF has been so darned slow! So slow that it's like it locks up for a bit and I can't click on anything. I just now got the newer version and it's working great! I hope this lasts!

Not sure how much I care about personas, since (a) I'm the sort who runs Windows 7 using the "Windows Classic" theme, and (b) I've adjusted FF 3.5 to use as little area at the top of the window for menus/icons/search/address-bar as possible in order to maximize the actual page area. But we'll see... (downloading now).

    911jason,

Funny you mention this as I just dl'ed firefox in all of my pc's yesterday. I am not always comfortable with change, but everyone has been telling me how much more secure firefox is than IE and with two teenagers on laptops, I figured I would give it a shot. I gotta say I am loving it! It is quite a bit faster than IE, and those personna's are KILLER!!!! I have Turquoise Butterflies right now, and yesterday I had Pink Radience. I am loving it!!!!

    P.S.- Would LOVE a kindle personna. =)

Tried several personas. . . have settled on a ukulele one for now. . .but that may change. . . .a lot make it really hard to see the icons which, to me, makes them useless. . . .I'll play more, though. :D

This thread prompted me to get off my b**t and upgrade to 3.6. Very nice personas. since there are 47,557+, it's gonna take a while to browse them all! But I've already created a file of about 6 'favorites'. Using 'Old Garden Paper 5' (http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/79431) right now.

I put v. 3.6 on my computer last night, but the personas are too busy for me.  The brushed silver one is the only one that doesn't get in the way of the labels I need to see, but I haven't even put that one on.  It's like putting a skin on the dashboard.

Now that I look at the bunch of them again, I agree with you.
I chose Sunset Over Water for the reason that you chose the birds.
The left sie is just dark - ok.

I tried 3 or 4 of various types, settled on a metallic silver/gray one, found that even that made some menus/icons difficult to see, so I went back to the default layout. It was cute, but for me totally unnecessary and no benefit to the user experience (in fact it decreased it for me). Of course, my Kindle skin is Decal Girl "Carbon", so what do I know? ;)
