My name is Elizabeth, and I'm a full-time editor. I've had the pleasure of editing and proofreading the manuscripts of several KBoard members over the last three years, including some best sellers!

Arrowhead Editing focuses on the sentence-level editing of final draft manuscripts.

My services include:

Proofread
0.006 / word (or $60 per 10k words)
Take 10% off as a follow-up to a line edit

Line Edit
0.012 / word (or $120 per 10K words)

Genres I have edited:
Cozy Mysteries
Superhero
YA Urban Fantasy
Historical Fantasy
High Fantasy
Paranormal Romance
Mysteries
Spy Thrillers
Science Fiction
Space Operas
Horror
Techno-Thriller
Contemporary Romance
Post-Apocalyptic
Alien Invasion
And more!

My strengths are in smoothing out sentences, ensuring consistency in spelling, names, and style, fixing grammatical errors both basic and advanced, catching repetitions, flagging inaccurate or anachronistic wording, and catching missing words and typos. I have been praised for my attention to detail and thorough edits.

I follow the Chicago Manual of Style and use both the New Oxford American Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. I am familiar with American and British spelling.

I use Microsoft Word's track changes and comment features. I also use Scrivener, though I prefer Word for editing.

I have studied creative writing & history at university, and I earned a degree in Broadcasting & Film.

Want to know whether I'm the right editor for your manuscript? Send a 1000-word sample that best reflects the overall condition of your manuscript to arrowheadediting[at]gmail[dot]com and I'll have the edited sample back to you within 48 hours (weekends not included).

For more information, including a detailed breakdown of the services I offer and my availability, please visit my website: www.arrowheadediting.com

You can also hire me through Reedsy!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to PM me, email me, or post here!

Thank you for reading my post and I hope to work with you soon!

Hi! I'm not a writer, but I know many folks here use Scrivener. Do you work with Scrivener, or only with .doc/x documents?

I actually use Scrivener to write, myself. Love that program!

    Promotional Update: September 2, 2014

Offer is now closed (and in record time I think!)

With September's promotion being such a big hit, I'll be sure to hold more in the future. Check back for other promotional offers!

Hi Elizabeth - I second Catherine's question. I would like to book a service if the sample goes well, but I'm looking for late September. This would be novella length so something around 30,000.

    Hello Elizabeth,

How long will this proofreading promotion be running for?

    Thank you. :)

The first two weeks of September (or until I book 5-6 proofreading jobs).

I'd be more than happy to honor a scheduling with these rates, as long as your edits are scheduled for either September or October. If this doesn't work for you, email me and we can work something out.

    Hi Heather!

Late September works for me. Email me a sample whenever its ready and I'll get it back to you within 24 hours of receiving it.

Edited to add for no particular reason: I have Bound in Blue on my Kindle!

Ideally, the first week in October because of life stuff at the moment. And I get paid the last week of September.

I'll book you in for the week of October 6 as a placeholder. If anything changes, let me know. You can email me anytime :)

I'm going to assume that a typical book would (ideally) need all phases of editing done. That is, developmental, substantive, and proofreading.

This would add up to $1,260 for an 80k manuscript. That's a lot of money for a self-pub author. Are there discounts available for the later phases, if the earlier phases are purchased?

    Thanks

For 40,000 words, it usually takes 2-3 days, but that's usually for extensive copyedits. For a proofread, I'd estimate 1-2 days. If you need it done ASAP, I can push it to one day. These estimates can change depending on the level of work required.

Actually 1,260 is a very very low quote for three full passes for the amount of work described. To put things in perspective I paid 500$ for 20k from my developmental/content editor for a single pass. Which would work out to about 2,000 for an 80k manuscript, and that's just for one pass. Now Joshua, the guy I worked with, does fall on the expensive end for Indies, but he wasn't the most expensive. So I think you'll find that these rates are quite low. Editing is expensive, and perhaps the most important investment you can put into your work.

A wonderful promotion. Unfortunately, my next manuscript probably won't be ready for proofing until November-ish, but I've bookmarked the thread for the future.

You guys are amazing! It's been a whirlwind trying to keep up, but in the matter of two hours, I've booked my promotion solid. I can't wait to start editing all your manuscripts, some of which I've had my eye on from your signatures.

I'll more than likely hold another promotion in November, so keep the page bookmarked! If you guys have any comments or suggestions, feel free to post here or message me (yeah, I know, $5 for 10k next time, right ;))

    Thanks again!

I'd suggest trying to write it yourself (you know your book best) and sharing it on KBoards for feedback. There are blurb doctors out there and I'd definitely be happy to help, too.
    My advice:
Make a character list of the important characters (protagonist, antagonist, love interest or supporting character), list your conflicts (outer and inner), any themes, the state of your "Ordinary world" (bad example: Willowbrooks was a nice, sleepy town) and the event that disturbs it (bad example continuation: until Smith, Aliens Most Wanted, moved into the neighborhood), your setting, and go from there. Try to boil your book down to one line (usually a question), and expand the summary from there (similar to the Snowflake Method).

Got my proofread back from Elizabeth last week and couldn't have been happier with her work. Not only did she find and fix lots of embarrassing little errors, she also pointed out a couple of continuity issues that I would have never found myself. Couldn't recommend her more highly!
