HBO greenlights 'Game of Thrones' to series

Winter is, indeed, coming.

HBO has greenlighted highly anticipated fantasy series "Game of Thrones."

The premium network has picked up the project for a first season debut next spring (below is the first released photo from the series). Nine episodes plus the pilot have been ordered. Production will begin in Belfast this June.

From the moment the project was first announced in development, the series based on the George R.R. Martin novels has generated enormous, perhaps unprecedented, online interest for a series at such an early stage.

The sprawling tale set in the mythical land of Westeros tells the story of the noble Stark family who become caught up in high court intrigue when patriarch Eddard (played by Sean Bean) becomes the king's new right-hand man. The four-and-counting books in the series would each be used as one season of the series.

Unlike many fantasy novels, the "Thrones" series largely avoids relying on magical elements and instead goes for brutal realism -- think "Sopranos" with swords. Martin, a former TV writer ("Beauty and the Beast"), writes each chapter as a cliffhanger, which should lend itself well to series translation.

Sweet, I had not heard they committed to anything more than the pilot, so this is great news!

There is a GoT tabletop battle game coming out soon, a nice card game and strategic war game already out, mods for Total War (a great PC war game), a few comics, nice replica swords and stuff, several RPG iterations, and now a TV show. What is left?

Oh yeah, THE NEXT DAMNED BOOK!!!!!!!!!

While I love ASOIAF, the number of competing series that have been introduced, and even completed, in the increasing time span between books 4 and 5 is staggering! With all this parallel development coing to fruition, how can that guy not finish the books?

I lost interest in the series when Martin lost interest in writing the next book..and the disdain he has shown eager fans who have asked him about it is  just wrong...fans pay his bills

I have read all that he wrote and the last one seemed like he had lost his way.  I think the first couple were great.  I understand he is writing epic fantasy but how long do you really need?

He needs an editor. He has the same problem that Diana Gabaldon does but at least she manages to put a book out every 4 years or so.

I agree.... and it is still up there after how many years?

I have just about given up on the series.  I re-read them all a couple of years ago when I was reading online articles about the next book release.  Wanted to be prepared.  As it is, I am lucky to remember any of the characters -- except for Tyrion.  I WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS TO TYRION!   ;D

Excited about HBO series coming out on the books.  Going to have to round up some friends with HBO...   I have never had HBO but have been netflix'ing some of the HBO series and love them.  My husband and I powered through the Sopranos and were losing sleep over them.  Just finished the "Rome" series last weekend -- another good one.  Hope they do as fine a job with the "Fire and Ice" series.

Oooooh....this might even be worth getting the books for my Kindle and re-reading them again, which I swore I would not do until Book 5 had a solid release date.  (Remember all the trouble Amazon got in for posting wrong early release dates for Book 4...twice?  I pre-ordered it...both times!   :-[)

I only recently discovered the series, so I'm not as bitter and angry about the five year wait. For me, it is only been like a 3-month wait. I might sing a different tune if, five years from now, I'm still waiting.

I started reading the series right before Book 3 was released.  At the time, I thought it was going to be a trilogy.

Ah, those good ol' days when I could finish one and move right onto the next!

;D  My thoughts exactly.  I am trying not to hype it in my mind but it is already starting to build up a head of steam.  Gotta work on some friends who have HBO...

The books have been phenomenal.  When the next book is released, I plan to lock my doors, call in sick to work, and not leave the house until it is over.  Once I power through it the first time, then I can go back and read it again more carefully  :D.  I get so excited I feel like the hamster in the little rolly ball in in the animated movie "Bolt." (You would had to have seen the movie to understand this level of excitement).

I actually don't have HBO, but once Game of Thrones goes live, we'll probably order it. My wife and I are such big fans.
