15% off Editing for NaNoWriMo Winners
« on: February 19, 2015, 07:51:05 am »
Hi Everyone!

My name is Jessica and I'm a freelance editor. I have a certificate in Copyediting from UC San Diego (as well as an MA in English, a BA in Creative Writing, and a BA in History) and have been editing for over five years. Though I edit all kinds of writing (academic, articles, resumes, etc.) my passion is fiction. I run a book blog called Tales Between the Pages, where I write book reviews, page to screen adaptation reviews, and discuss all things literary. What does being a reviewer mean for you? It means I'm up-to-date on new releases and current trends and can use that knowledge to give your manuscript a leg up.

Individual Services:

Proofreading $0.006/word
Copy editing $0.007/word
Substantive Editing $0.008/word
Jacket Summaries $200 flat fee (includes one read through of the manuscript, the jacket summary, and one revision)

Editing Packages

Full Service Package $0.018/word - Includes one round of substantive editing, one round of copy editing, and one round of proofreading.

If you're interested in learning more, you can visit my website: http://www.jessicahollandediting.com. I provide a 5 page sample edit as a part of my free quote.

I'm incredibly passionate about books and would love to work with you.

UPDATE 12/4/2015

Every year, I offer discounts to NaNoWriMo winners. Show me your 2015 validation and receive 15% off all services. Now booking for January and beyond. Email me for a free quote at [email protected]

    I offer several affordable services:

    Proofreading $1.25/250 words
    Copyediting $1.50/250 words
    Substantive Editing $1.75/250 words
    Developmental Editing $2.00/250 words
    Jacket Summaries $200 flat fee (includes one read through of the manuscript, the jacket summary, and one revision)

    Ugh, math in the morning. Are these rates accurate?

    Proofreading $1.25/250 words  ==> .005 / word
    Copyediting $1.50/250 words  ==> .006 / word
    Substantive Editing $1.75/250 words  ==> .007 / word
    Developmental Editing $2.00/250 words   ==> .008 / word

    I was trying to estimate what the cost would be for a 30k word novella and the extra division didn't agree with this maths challenged writer. :P

    Those are pretty good prices, IMO. $640 for full DevEdit for an 80K novel (the first time I ran it, I came up with $6,400. Almost lost my coffee!)

    Two questions:

    1. Does each level of edit include the level below it? Or would you do (and charge for) each separately?
    2. Do you have minimum chunk sizes?

    This is a hard question to answer. I read across most genres (thriller, mystery, literary, contemporary women's, middle grade, YA, etc.). I'm not in the habit of turning down work, but I am the least familiar with poetry, autobiography, and memoir.

    1. Yes, each level includes the level below.
    2. Not usually. We hash all that out when we talk about quotes/scheduling.

    What do you like to read when you're not editing? Like, pleasure reading?

    And with your BA in history, where did you focus your interests? What periods of history?

    Mostly curious, but I'm also slowly working on finding editors I think will be like-minded enough for me to want to work with.

    I'm currently reading: Wicked Women: Notorious, Mischievous, and Wayward Ladies from the Old West by Chris Enss.

    Books I Adore:

    The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb
    Reservation Blues and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
    Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore
    Food Memoirs like Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain, Bon Apptempt by Amelia Morris, and My Life in France by Julia Child
    The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury
    Ubik by Philip K. Dick
    Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
    Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
    Ready Player One by Earnest Cline
    Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
    Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton .... also The Andromeda Strain
    North and South by John Jakes
    Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
    The Hunger Games Series
    Harry Potter

    I could go on here, but I'll move on to your history question:

    During my MA I focused on early American literature, which is a 50/50 split on history and literature for the most part. My time period of interest is 1770-1870. One of my favorite early American history books of all time is What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848. A close second is Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War by TJ Stiles.

     I have several literature favorites from the time period: The Letters of John and Abigail Adams, Ormond by Charles Brockden Brown, Reuben and Rachel by Susanna Rowson, Hope Leslie by Catharine Maria Sedgwick, and The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I also love Walt Whitman.

    My BA in History didn't ask me to specialize because they wanted us to have broad training. I especially loved these courses: History of Chinese Civilization, History of Modern France, History of the American West, US History 1939-1960, and US Space History (my favorite).

    So yeah, I'm a giant history nerd who reads just about everything I get my hands on.

    I do accept short stories. Turn around time depends on the word count and the level of editing you need. You can email me for more information if you'd like. I'd be happy to help you.
