Documentaries about authors / writing
« on: March 09, 2015, 11:32:15 pm »
Hello there!

I just watched a Harlan Ellison documentary on Amazon and it was amazing. Also, Story of a Writer was worth a watch. Can we share documentaries about writing/writers/authors in this thread?

Tales From The Script was a really good doc I saw a while back. It's a screenwriting documentary so not focused on prose writers, but I thought it was great.

I saw one about an old woman who was a very working-class person, didn't speak proper Queens English as she was from Newcastle (a very dialect part of the UK) and her struggles to get published. Her book was contemporary fiction, about a boy growing up in the North-East England and the family troubles etc.

She had a wealthy and influential agent though, a real eccentric gent.  He got her published and it showed her walking into the bank to collect her advance and the manager meeting her with flowers!

100,000 was her advance! This was in 2004-5 time as well!

I can't remember the name of her book. Run for.... .... ???

    It was an interesting documentary.

There was a PBS doc on August Wilson I recorded recently, which was pretty cool. They play it now and again.

Also, half hour "teaching aids" about writers on local PBS station in Chicago. They are very broad, but one introduced me to Anzia Yezierska - a fabulous writer of New York's Lower East Side 1910-1920's. She wrote a memoir called Red Ribbon on a White Horse about having her first book bought by Hollywood in the 20's and her experience out there. Also wrote about WPA in Depression and writers being paid by the government to write guidebooks and things.

    I love docs on writers.

There was a good mini-series about the history of crime writers on BBC a few weeks back, and a documentary about Tove Jansson, which was fantastic (I think that was on Sky Arts). She was a fascinating woman, and it showed how she got her ideas for the characters for her Moomins series, but my planner cut it off just before the end...ugh! I can't remember the names of either now, though. Sorry.
