please recommend me podcasts
« on: May 22, 2015, 09:33:15 am »
I've never actually heard a podcast, I'm not even 100% sure what it is. But I think it is like a radio programme on a certain topic?

So can I listen to one on my kindle? Do I get it off the internet or off Amazon?

And what would be a really good one for me? (baring in mind that I'm already a published Indie Author but well aware that I still have loads to learn).

Obviously I am hoping to listen to ones about writing. Kind of like reading good posts here except I'll be listening while walking. Thanks!!

You can listen to a podcast on anything that will play an MP3, so most people use their phone, tablet or computer. They are basically radio talk shows, yes. Here are some of the top ones:

    Rocking Self-Publishing
    Sell More Books Show
    Self Publishing Podcast
    The Creative Penn

There are a ton of other great ones, but those four seem to be the most popular.

    In addition to Chris's -

Self Publishing Round Table gets a few good guests
The Writership has just launched, critiquing indie work as editors - still finding its feet but I'm enjoying it
Hank Garner's Author Stories are interesting too.

Writing Excuses is run by trad-published authors but there's a lot of good craft advice across their 10 seasons.

John August is a screenwriter but he and his partner Craig Mazin talk a lot about storytelling in general in amongst the Hollywood stuff

For writing listen to I Should Be Writing http://murverse.com/podcasts/ and The Dead Robots Society. http://deadrobotssociety.com/ For general entertainment listen to The Monster Podcast https://monsterpod.wordpress.com/ The Joe Rogan Experience (cant reccomend this one enough. Some surprisingly great conversations here) and The Nerdist http://nerdist.com.

Also, the Author Biz and the Science Fiction and Fantasy podcast (Lindsay Buroker).  Even if you don't write in SFF, there's a lot of useful information in those.

Not sure about Kindle Fire. I listen on my laptop. Isn't there a Kindle Fire forum somewhere on kboards (outside the Writer's Cafe)? Maybe someone there would know.

    Rocking Self-Publishing

    Self Publishing Podcast
    The Creative Penn

There are others I pay attention to, but these are the three I listen to most episodes of. (In the case of The Self Publishing Podcast, I listen to every episode. It's just very fun, whether or not you're getting useful stuff every week)

Ooh. Found a few new ones.i had to go through and delete over half the actual podcast files on my phone because they ate up my SD card. I don't know what works with Kindle devices, but I have the app Pocket Casts on my Android and it's great for subscribing and auto downloading and such. Now if only the hubby would turn down the music, I could listen to a few on the road trip  XD

I listen to podcasts on my Kindle Fire. There are a number of ways to listen to podcasts. Apple users can download using iTunes. Android users can use Stitcher. Many podcasts have a YouTube channel.

But here's all I do to listen on a Kindle. It's simple. Go to the show's website, find an episode, and click play on the player.

I did that, nothing happened. I wondered if I was supposed to download some software. Also I want to listen out and about (away from wifi) can I download something in advance and play it back?

    Hi,
If it is OK to self-promote, we are 5 episodes in with our new podcast, http://typehammer.com/ where three programmers who write take a more a tech focus to writing, publishing, and the craft. Still finding our sea legs, but is a lot of fun.

    Thank you

For the last year, I have co-hosted a podcast called Media Carnivores: http://mediacarnivores.com

My co-host is Brent Hartinger, who has both self and traditionally published. His debut novel Geography Club was turned into a movie.

We use the podcast very specifically to build a listenership/readership and to connect with our current fans. It's a sort of mixed bag of movies, TV, books, and stuff about us. Recent episodes include "Does Harry Potter hold up?" and "Is Game of Thrones the future of television?" But also insider topics like "How do writers pick their next project?"

It has a smaller audience than my writing and blog posts, but I can also say that the fans have been very vocal and loyal. I can see the long-game of this being a very good thing for us, especially as I release new work.
