Winter, what I've found with all the Kindle apps (on the PC, on the iTouch and on the iPad) is that they are limited as to what you're used to on the Kindle itself. I like to highlight passages as I read and I like to search for something I may remember from before that is important now...neither of those can you do using the app. It's good for just reading and it will sync to Amazon and keep your place across all platforms which is nice, but you can't beat doing the reading on the Kindle.

That's right, though I seldom use other things than reading. But it is great for places where the kindle is to big to handle. Like when walking my cats..

Winter, congrats on the Iphone! Everyone I know who has one just loves it! I have the ipod Touch and I do like it. I don't have wi-fi at my house (we live out in the boonies) but do at work, so I can check email and look stuff up on amazon and I also have the QVC app - love it! I only read about 2 books on the kindle app, reading on a backlit screen really hurts my eyes, even playing games for long periods of time really strains them. (But I can read for hours and hours and hours on my precious Annabelle with no problems!)

I just found out about the new update coming and I am so excited! I can't wait to get it! Now I have to look at my excel spreadsheet and make a list of what I'm going to name my collections ..... So much organizing to do and so little time ....

I looked at the tag names I have been using on my K2. I am going to work on a shorter list for my Collection names.

I would have been nice if the new update synced with Calibre and used the tags there for categories. But at least it's something.

I don't think Amazon is going to try to sync with 3rd party software, but I wouldn't be surprised if the author of Calibre does implement something like that once the updates are released. He seems to be very proactive, with weekly updates. If that happens, though, I think I'm going to revisit my categories in Calibre before I use them on the Kindle. I wonder if we'll be able to have subcategories... ie categories Fiction, Nonfiction. Then under fiction, categories for fantasy, science fiction, mystery, suspense... and what about read and unread? Hm this could get complicated.

From what I've seen, you can have categories and subcategories and (really useful) you can have one book in multiple categories. I can't wait to get home from work and turn on my Whispernet to see if it's there waiting. Looks like some people are getting it now.

ibrewalot, where did you see the subcategories? I thought I read that there are categories and that one book can be in multiple categories. I did not read that a category could have subcategories.

After reading that the people getting the early updates have DX's, I am tempted to turn WN on for DH's DX. (Mine has been on since the announcement.

Amazon is in the process of rolling out the much anticipated update to our Kindles that will, among other things, allow us to better organize/categorize the books on our Kindles. Here's a link to the announcement on the Amazon website:

Some people have gotten an early update for testing purposes. Update 2.5 Screenshots but most of us will not have this on our K2 and KDX until end of May. There have been statements that there will be some form of Collections for the K1s at a later time. However that is from the discussions on Amazon; not sure if it has been confirmed.

This is the update that Amazon promised last year that would be available in the first half of 2010 to improve the ability of Kindle owners to organize their content, i.e. the much requested "folders" or "tagging". The Collections will function like "tagging" since a single document can belong to zero, one, or more Collections.

There are other features that will be in the update as well. The other one that DH and I are most looking forward to is the ability to Zoom and Pan on PDF documents. There will be 5 sizes: Fit to Screen (what we have now), 150%, 200%, 300%, and Actual Size. DH will also like the 2 new larger font sizes and improved clarity.

EDIT: The Zoom and Pan will not work on images in books. This means that if a map of Alterra is available as a PDF file, we would be able to zoom in and see details up to 300% or Actual Size. However the maps in a book could not be zoomed any more than is currently possible (fit to screen).

Second EDIT: Maps were the very first thing I thought of when I saw the announcement about Zoom and Pan of PDF documents. (Origami diagrams were second and DH's model railroad magazines were third.

I must have read it wrong earlier...could have sworn I saw sub-collections, but here's a quote from someone that has it already and set up collections:

One drawback to the Collections feature - no sub-folders. You can't create a sub-Collection within another Collection. The ability to sort by author within a collection does help keep series together but sub-collections would have been nice.
