I've been drooling over the Canon 5D Mark II for more than a year, mainly due to it's amazing high-definition video capabilities. I just stumbled across this article about how the director of the hit Fox TV series, House, used the camera exclusively for filming the season finale that will air next month. Side note, it was also the first digital camera used to shoot the official Presidential portrait.

This is the camera:

House Season Finale Filmed Entirely with Canon 5D Mark II

This is a sample short-film shot with the camera:

I think it's pretty nuts.  I had that camera on my short list, but my bankroll was even shorter and I wanted to go with a Nikon so it was not to be.  I've seen some footage shot on this and the Nikon equivalent and it was pretty insane in terms of quality.  I'll have to make a special point to watch that episode of House.  I haven't really bothered trying to do much with the video on the camera I did buy, but I imagine it's not near the quality you get out of those higher end DSLRs.

The first video I saw that really dropped my jaw was some live footage of a Nine Inch Nails concert that was shot right on the stage with the cameraman walking among the performers. The camera handled the dark lighting so well, and was not affected in the least by the strobe and stage lights. You could see the sweat just pouring off the lead singer. I'm not a NIN fan, but the video was amazing.

If you search for NIN and Canon 5d on vimeo.com you'll find many videos like that.

I've been retweeting this all day to my friends! I have that camera and it is just amazing. I've taken some gorgeous portraits with it, and some great video as well. The Low ISO performance is just amazing, and of course the lenses are top-notch.

I'm soooo jealous Holly! I'll trade you a 25-yr old 2nd hand Canon AE1 with 2 lenses and a bunch of crappy filters in a very worn and dirty camera bag!!! ;D

Sorry, I have my own 25-year old AE1 not to mention a backup Rebel XT :D. It took me a year of sitting fees to save up enough for the 5D and so far it's been worth every penny.

That was impressive! At first, the handheld camera was bothering me, but about 10 minutes in I completely forgot I was watching something filmed with a SLR. They certainly played up depth of field at every opportunity, and then some, but I expected that. I found the low light captures particularly impressive. That camera is a dream in low light.
