how many audio books can you have on the kindle?
« on: June 22, 2010, 10:14:26 am »
I only have 50 books, 20 archived, on my Kindle 2. When I tried to add another audiobook
It said i was out of room. How can that be?

Audio files (including just MP3 songs) take up a tremendous amount of space. If you want to carry a lot of audiobooks with you, you'd be better off with a large capacity MP3 player.

Audio files (including just MP3 songs) take up a tremendous amount of space. If you want to carry a lot of audiobooks with you, you'd be better off with a large capacity MP3 player.

As an example, a recent audiobook I listened to, The City & The City, is a 336 page hardcover. The Kindle edition is 492K (0.5MB).

The audio of this book is 39MB in its lowest quality format, and 296MB in enhanced format. That's about 600 times larger. And it's not a particularly long book. Given the amount of space typically on a Kindle, you probably can't fit more than 4 or 5 audio books on there in a higher quality format.

I do have 18 audiobooks on it, I guess I didn't understand about the space. So when you delete them, do they stay in your audible library and you can download them again or are they gone? I don't save the ebooks,
but I thought if I got my favorite on audio i could listen to them a few times.

I have hundreds of audiobooks.  There is no way I could save even a portion of my audiobooks on my kindle.

Not sure if this is an okay place to ask this question but......I checked out the audible.com site and did not see the Kindle as a compatible device.  If I joined, is it possible to download the file to my K2?

eldereno, yes, Kindle 2 supports Audible format audio files.

To the original poster, it's really easy to manage your Audible library.  You only need to download an Audible audiobook once.  When you downloaded your first Audible book, you had to install the Audible software, so I assume you have the Audible Manager on your pc.

To manage your Audible books, open the Audible Manager program.  All the Audible audiobooks you have downloaded will be listed here.  Connect your Kindle via the USB cable - Audible Manager will automatically pick it up and show you which audiobooks are on the Kindle.  If you want to add a book to the Kindle, right-click on the title and select "Add to Amazon Kindle".  You can delete audiobooks from the Kindle, but they will still be on your pc and with Audible Manager, it's very quick and easy to transfer them back to the Kindle.

As luvmy4brats said, you can always download your audiobooks from the Audible library if something goes wrong and you lose the files.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks on my Kindle, but I only have one on my device at any one time.  If you want to carry a bigger audiobook library with you, you might want to check which other devices Audible supports.

Yes, with the help of these people, I learned to use audible. As a tech dummy I did not understand about the space until now. I can still order an ebook and get it but I am overloaded with audiobooks so I guess I will have to delete some and reload as I want them. Maybe I should check out am MP3? I've never seen one. But I do thank you all for the help.

Just one more thing, you will be able to download the file...but not wirelessly to your Kindle.  Audiobooks are far too large to be downloaded directly onto the Kindle like ebooks.  You have to download it to a pc first and then transfer it onto the Kindle.

Me personally, don't care for listening to audible books on my Kindle. I often listen to books at night and quite often fall asleep while listening. If I do that while listening on the Kindle, I'll wake up in the morning at the end of the book (or part). With my iPhone or iPod I have a sleep timer.

I do keep one or two books on there "just in case" but honestly, I am never without my iPhone, so they haven't been listened to.
