Ingram Sparks PDF Upload Issue
« on: January 29, 2019, 09:17:32 am »
I've been trying to export/upload my PDF manuscript to Ingram Sparks for weeks, but the upload fails each time because "fonts aren't embedded." After converting my Word document to PDF through multiple online sources with the same Ingram response, I finally paid Adobe to export the document--still no go. Every single PDF version, no matter what tool/service I used indicates that the font was successfully embedded, so I'm at a loss as to what to do next. (I had no issue uploading the PDF manuscript to Amazon.) My font is Book Antiqua, and I use the same font for headers and content throughout. I've checked page-x-page multiple times to ensure no other font was accidentally used. There are no images in the interior (my cover image was accepted by Ingram with the first upload). I even changed the font to Times New Roman at one point and the upload was still denied "font not embedded." Numerous calls with Ingram Sparks CS have resulted in the same response: "We don't offer tech support--all fonts must be embedded--you're on your own." Has anyone had this problem, and if so, what was causing the issue? Thanks.

Word has trouble with embedding OTF fonts I believe, whereas TTF seem to not cause problems. I remember when I went through Word, I had to jump through some hoops.

Save As... (To be safe) Export as...

Then change the type to PDF.

    Click on Options.

Under PDF Options select the ISO whatever compliant PDF/A (or X, can't remember).

    The fonts should be embedded.

I uploaded to IngramSpark with no problems.  Exact same PDF went to KDP with no issues.

I think the difference might be using 'Save As' instead of 'Export' but can't be sure.

    Here's what worked for me:

In Word (2016), click File, then Export, then click  'Create PDF/XPS Document.'

On the Save dialog, make sure 'Standard (publishing online and printing)' option is selected.

Click 'Options...' and make sure 'PDF/A compliant' is checked.

On my Win10 machine, Book Antiqua is a TTF, so not sure why it might not be working.

    Hope this is helpful.

I have seen that error too many times. Here's what you do. Since you have Adobe, open the PDF file in Indesign.
These are the steps to importing a word PDF in Indesign.
    Open new document
    Set the margins of your book..If 6 X 9...
    Start on page 1
Then click "Create document" after you have set your format for the book.
Go to the top of Indesign menu and click "window"
    scroll down to "Utilities"
    Click "scripts"
    Search for "SelectmultiplepagesPDF" click it.
    A pop-up window should open.
Select your Microsoft Word Pdf file.
It will then load into Indesign
Check to make sure it looks correct once loaded into indesign.
    Export and save as PDF(Print)

(This will save all the embedded fonts that's needed for IngramSpark)

Snap! Don't "save as"-- "export." You'd think someone at Ingram Sparks would have suggested that! Thank you, Rock.
