I believe it's a matter of conflict of interest.  Thousands of copies of her books were bought by a state university, on whose board she was a member.

Yep, she was on the board that voted to pay her hundreds of thousands of dollars for these books. Clear conflict of interest. Plus, most of the many tens of thousands of copies of the books that were allegedly purchased are missing and don't seem to actually exist.

And now the Baltimore Sun is blaming self-publishing:

    https://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/arts/bs-fe-pugh-self-publishing-20190402-story.html

"...a disruptive new industry"???  About a paragraph or two later, the writer notes that self-publishing has been around since 2007, so... is that considered 'new'?

Too bad the article doesn't allow comments.

But Baltimoreans might wonder what would have happened if the Kindle had never been invented, or if the meteoric rise of the self-publishing industry had been delayed by perhaps three decades. Would Healthy Holly have remained Pughs own private brainchild instead of a roughly 80-page national embarrassment? And would she still occupy the Baltimore mayors office today?

    Good grief.

I think the writer, Ms. McCauley, missed the TRUE party that bears the blame:  Clearly, blame rests at the feet of Johannes Gutenberg.  If he hadn't made his famous printing press, the written word wouldn't have become so common, and people wouldn't have learned to read.  The people of Baltimore would have been spared this horrific mess if nobody had learned to read in the first place.  (Thanks a lot, Johannes!!)

In fairness to the newspaper, they have another article (a sidebar article) that speaks positively of self-publishing and features several Baltimore area indie authors.

Probably was in response to the negative reactions from self-published authors from the first article.

As an author who struggles to sell 100 books a month and hasn't seen a profit yet, I want the Baltimore mayor to rot in prison for the rest of her life for this.
