Amazon Review Anomalies
« on: May 30, 2019, 06:39:00 pm »
A quick question for anyone who might know - I was perusing Lee Child's books on Amazon UK and I noticed something odd - Reacher 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 15, and 17 all have precisely 11,772 reviews each.  My question is, What the hell?

How... unusual. They have different numbers on the .com site, and different (but way smaller) numbers on the .com.au site. Maybe it's just a glitch and it will pass. It was only a week or so ago that someone here woke up to find their small number of reviews had ballooned to thousands overnight...but, sadly, it was corrected.

Another indie writer I follow released a book a few weeks ago and instead of the usual 10-20 reviews in the first week, got over 300, this was also corrected. But what worries me is why this is happening, and exactly how accurate are any of these reviews, if quantities can just fly around all over the place like this?

I'm getting all kinds of foreign reviews but none from the US. Could be a quirk or something. Beats me.

I have noticed this. May make a comment in the review section.

How do you find the foreign reviews? Do you have to go to each Amazon site?

    I also have this question.

I assembled four of the largest review site lists that I could find. You know, The Indie Review, Rudsy (sp?), and two others. I think one of them lists 100 or more. I targeted YA fantasy. I sent out about 340 personalized requests, with about half of which were inactive (moved, closed, swamped, hiatus). Out of those I had 48 direct requests for the book, which is still no guarantee because it went to their TBR pile. This took me about 50 days. I also hit up my writing groups and display sites, FB and twitter. So far I'm had reviews from Canada, India and England. No US reivews. Not that I'm complaining, but even got another promise from an Australian reviewer coming up. This hasn't happened to me before, I can't figure it.

The review sites lists are from YA & Kids Book Central, Buzz Books, BookFunel, and the freebie site, Book Reviews. Maybe I'm missing something that might be more domestic heavy. But that's what happened.

Well, over a week later and now Mr Child has precisely and identically 11,783 reviews on Reacher 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 15, and 17. Now, no one is going to persuade me that it's possible for 10 novels to all have precisely the same quantity of reviews, especially at this scale, and yet they've all grown 11,772 to 11,783, which is an addition of 11 reviews on each one, and they're all on there a week later.

Seems it's okay to have thousands of fake reviews on books these days?

Have you actually clicked on any of these reviews? Because one minute of checking will show you that they're the same 11,783 reviews. For some reason, all the books link back to the same repository of reviews, like a series page. He doesn't have 11,783 reviews for each book. How would anyone even coordinate something like that? Those are for the entire series.

Cool, how do indie authors get all of their reviews put across their entire series? I'm sure it's possible, unless Amazon are discriminating against the very people who built their entire platform.

My guess is that Amazon is testing some new software and it's throwing out glitches. They certainly aren't going to tell us what's going on, so we can only observe and guess.

I'm not sure I would want to see reviews across the whole series. You could easily see spoilers for later books.

    That's a fact.

BTW, did get my first us Amazon review--short and sweet. It translated to all the foreign sites. Too bad that didn't happen in the opposite. guh.
