What are you doing on this 4th of July?
« on: July 04, 2019, 08:26:46 am »
ME:
  • Arose at 7am and got the coffee brewing.
  • Started preparing my partner's lunchbag.
  • Smacked my head. Duh! Silly me. He doesn't work today - it's a national holiday!
YOU (hopefully):
  • Had a nice long sleep-in uninterrupted by an alarm clock.
  • Enjoyed a homemade breakfast. Or a stale toaster biscuit from the back of the pantry, at least.
  • Look forward to a day off celebrating with family/friends - or - look forward to a day off alone while avoiding family/friends.

We decided on foregoing a family get together and are instead making this a pressure-free relax at home day. In other words, I'll be roaming Pinterest and Instagram for holiday food porn because we are antisocial sticks-in-the-mud. :D

I still got up early as I am watching Wimbledon.  ;D Staying home and we'll be grilling some burgers later. Just chillin. Having some beer later and some margaritas to cool down. Hot here. Humid.  All while wearing bug repellent armour as my backyard puts the woods to shame when it comes to biting creatures. I step out for 10 seconds on my patio and get attacked.

Every year I keep thinking of maybe going somewhere. Some nice events here. But then I think of the crowds, the heat, the crowds and where the heck am I going to pee.  ;D

Staying in where it is cool and doing as little as possible. I will be fixing ribs later, but they will be cooked in the Instant Pot. Not sure yet whether they will be finished in the oven or if I'll be able to talk II into finishing them on the grill.

We're avoid the crowd kind of anti-social stick in the mud types also.

Napcat, I like your attitude.  8)

Atunah, I'm with you on the importance of having a pee plan. But I think those bug battalions would keep me from going out in any case.  :o

Linjeakel, your avatar has me mesmerized.

loonlover, my partner bought an instant pot last winter. I don't know how to use it (never even used a pressure cooker) but he's made a number of yummy dinners with it such as chicken korma and chili.

Our neighborhood is situated on a hill and we have a good view for watching fireworks in several directions. Later in the evening, we'll probably step outside to enjoy the sky show.

I got up at my usual time -- 6 ish. Puttered about until 9 when I got showered and woke the Hubster.

Then we headed into DC for the baseball game -- Nats always (since they came back to DC) play at 11 a.m. on the 4th.

It was BEASTLY HOT -- I think I drank a gallon and a half of water! Hubster caught a t-shirt, which we gave to the kids sitting behind us. He also won a ball cap as the "designated driver fan of the game".

Then we headed down to our friends' pool to cool off (but just between you and me they keep it way too warm, though they and my husband like it Still nice. ;))

After a light dinner, we came home and sat down to watch the Phillies/Braves game but was dozing off in the chair so hit the sack around 8:30 and slept until about a half hour ago.

Completely ignored all the other ridiculous goings on in DC, but recorded the concert to watch today.

Ann, that sounds like a wonderful time. I haven't gotten to a baseball game in way too long. But then my local team hasn't been inspiring lately.

Although the neighborhood fireworks had started before dark, we didn't step out until 10 pm. For a good forty minutes, we enjoyed a nice series of sky blooms in the distance and a more intimate display from the end of our cul-de-sac. The surrounding tree-growth blocked other happenings that we could hear but only caught flashes of. A very pleasant evening and surprisingly, I didn't hear a single fire truck all night.

Im recovering from severe cough and sore throat due to allergies. Soo Cancelled my planned road trip to see my elderly mother. Got up at 7:30 am without alarm, had breakfast out, then didnt stir from the house the rest of the day. Read a Gideon Oliver novel and reread some Sherlock Holmes,  never turned on tv all day. To bed at Midnight so I could be back at work today.

My sympathies, THC (errr... is that abbreviation okay with you?). I know that severe allergies can make one totally miserable.

Believe it or not, we were at Schlitterbahn on the 3rd and 4th. That is way outside of my comfort zone - all those people!!
Then we came home for bbq and watched the fireworks streaming from Walt Disney World.

Awe, sorry Claw. What are you reacting too? I never had allergies until I moved to San Antonio. I know I get chest issues and cough with cedar in the spring, but lately I been having issues and apparently its the grass pollen and some mold. I think the grass is new to me. That makes my sinus messy and my nose hurts. And my throat is always tight and feels like I am swallowing marbles.  :(. I do take some generic zyrtec, when i can remember. It does seem to help.

    Hope you feel better soon.

Slept in...which then meant I had to rush to get ready, grabbed an Uber to the train station, rode down to Trenton, switched to the River Line and headed to Palmyra NJ, where I got picked up by a friend to go to their house for their usual July 4 picnic. Ate too much food, stayed the night there, got a lift to Hamilton Station in the morning, took the train to Penn Station in NYC, bought a new camera bag at B&H photo, took a quick train ride back to Secaucus Junction, Ubered back home, and collapsed for a few hours. :)

Tomorrow, I repeat the process to get down to Hamilton Station, where a friend will pick me up to go to this month's "Game Night" -- which is mainly an excuse to eat yet more food while getting in some card and/or board games while we're digesting before we start dessert.  8)

Good news: I'm now old enough for the senior discount on NJ Transit, so all those train rides are at more than half off the regular prices.

PS: Hope you feel better soon, Claw. My allergies were bad for a couple days early in the week -- weather app said the grass pollen was very high here.

We had a relaxing day of it.
Made a lot of potato salad and shrimp/pasta (shells) salad on Wednesday.
Cooked up two pounds of shrimp and put them in the fridge to cool.
Had a wonderful, easy dinner on the Fourth.  Enjoyed the Capital Fourth on PBS.  (wouldn't go to D.C. in that crowd for nothing)
And we have been eating from our abundant "salads" Friday dinner and will do so again tonight.  Will probably grill some chicken to go along tonight.
Hope you all were safe and happy.

THC is an old and honorable designation for me here!  :P I have used it myself in thread titles even...

THC, it's a relief to see that you haven't succumbed to summer allergies. :) That thread is such a neat idea. I wonder why I haven't seen others do similar ones?

So good to hear about everyone's holiday. And it sounds like Andra's and NogDog's were more adventurous than restful. 8)

geoffthomas, your mention of 'two pounds of shrimp' had me salivating. I think one of the best things about holidays is the leftovers.
