The #1 Contributor to your sales is....
« on: May 13, 2020, 04:11:27 pm »
What is the top reason for the bulk of your sales? I'm hoping for something we can use to benefit our businesses, not just "Amazon algorithms," but feel free to answer however you wish.  Perhaps it's someone who keeps you motivated. Perhaps a once in a lifetime speaking gig you landed, or it could be that you pop out a book a month....

For me, as far as I can tell, and as much as I try to resist it, it seems to be Amazon ads. Rather than invest more time into Amazon ads, I continuously look for ways to spend as little time as possible on it, to try to drive sales from other outlets.

For me, it's Facebook ads. 95%. I'm yet to nurture sufficient organic sales - something I intend to do once I stabilize the ad channels. AMS has been an absolute flop for me and I gave up on it long ago.

Consistent product and consistent releases. I do not advertise, and yet my books still sell, as well as my library. My sales, although not massive, are decent when I release consistently, and I make sure that the readers who bought the last few books know what to expect with the new ones, at least as far as writing quality, the types of characters, and plot 'quality' is concerned.

I put plot 'quality' in quotes because as a writer it's sometimes hard to stick with the desired tropes and believe you are really putting out a terrific plot. But you do the best you can.

A lot of authors here will swear by advertising. The advertising industry exists for a reason. So the success authors have with it is understandable, although, like stated on another thread here, YMMV with it.

I've found recently it's through the mutual promotion of other authors' works. Not manyof mine sold, just a wee sprinkling. But it was better than the promo sites I've used. I guess some promo sites do betterl with certain genres than others.

More books, ads and the algorithm. In that order.

I'm wide, so I take a very varied approach to visibility. In-store promos, permafrees, mailing list autoresponders, Bookbubs --- all key!

But if I had to choose just one thing, I'd have to say it's staying in my lane and giving my readers what they expect. Werewolves with a strong heroine and a good balance between adventure and romance. That way, once I find a reader who likes one book, they have a good chance of liking them all.

Hard work. Taking the time to put out a quality product and advertising non-stop.

Consistency is the most important thing. Writing as much as humanly possible and aiming to have put as much quality books out per year as humanly possible. Whether you're just starting out or have been at this a long time, new books is the best way to make money and that's where most writers should be focusing their efforts.

I think this is whats referred to as a false syllogism? The first part is true, but the second part not necessarily. It leaves several factors unaccounted for. Like effectiveness of marketing (including ads, blurb, and genre-suitability of the cover) and quality of product.

Without question, what's important is to have a reputable publisher behind the book. And not necessarily Big Five, either -- a university press sold 40,000 copies of a book for me, in hardcover and paperback over the course of 14 years, exclusive of a book club sale. A Big Five publisher then picked it up and sold another 25,000 copies over the next nine years. The university press was willing to issue a third edition if I didn't change a word of it, but I nobly refused and self-pubbed it. I've sold maybe 200 copies in four years. Publishers have also gotten movie, British editions, Dutch and Chinese translations, and mass-market paperback editions for me. So, hands down, if you want a lot of sales, get an agent who can get you a publisher.

On my own? I have absolutely no idea where the sales come from. Amazon Associate fees don't support the idea that my monthly newsletter sells a lot of books. I saw zero returns from Google and Facebook ads, and AMS worked only for the early months of the program, before Mr Bezos got us bidding against one another to return all our money to him. One thing I have noticed is that if I sell a book that hasn't previously moved, I'm likely to see another sale in a very few days, so I'm guessing that people buy books recommended to them by friends. So I think I'll give a weak show of support to the poster who said that quality writing will sell. (Well, not necessarily quality, but INTERESTING writing.)

My Guide sells a few copies every day. I used to think that was newbies on the KDP Community forums whose questions I would answer, but I've taken the month of May off from those, and sales have continued at pretty much the same rate.

I can't account for any promotion or marketing service that has truly sold books for me. I've taken out the last of my AMS ads for these last two books just recently released. So I'm sure they are not, or will be, much of a contributor. I can only say, after watching my stats and knowing where the books have been listed, that it has been word-of-mouth that has pushed some sales--not much, but just a little spike here and there every two days or so. I have a rather large FB following, so new books get a spike in sales at first. I'm running two author names and I'm wondering if the newer pen name is diluting the real author name, even though I'm exposing my identity. So lately, recommends from previous readers.

This. Whatever you need to do to get visible, be it FB ads or AMS or screaming at your neighbours, this is it.
