Opinions on new book cover
« on: May 14, 2020, 06:41:37 am »
I want to match the paperback cover with the ebook cover. As is, I can't get the ebook cover image (too long to explain) so I'm trying something different.

Thanks in advance.

Is featuring a face only on the cover really common in the genre?

Personally, I don't think having two different covers is a big deal.  What I do notice is the two women don't look like the same person (especially their hair color).  I think it is important the two women are seen as the same person.

Thanks for your replies so far. The trend seems to be vector-type images, but I was kind of wanting to do something different. Edward - I might do that, depending on the responses. Thanks a million.

Well, it can be different, but just face alone isn't enough to give genre context. It needs more probably. :)

I've changed the font. What do you all think? It's a cozy romance/mystery/clean.

You can insert the image into the post by using and posting the link to it between them.

    Yes.

Sadly, text is badly placed. Title should be a bit more centered, and definitely have little less space between the two lines. Bump it down a bit too, it's too close to the top edge now(making the space between lines smaller will allow that since that saves space). That's super common DIY cover mistake. Also the words of title are not center-aligned either between themselves. Top line words should be bumped a bit to the right.

Similar with author name, nudge it more to the right, a little higher, and then make the space between lines less.

What if you added something 'behind' her? Like a visual of a house, palace, etc whatever works according to the book (on the left of her). That would make cover less empty.

    .

Make the title font 'thicker' or choose another font.
Fonts are surprisingly important to setting genre and quality of the cover.

One way to cheat thicker fonts is to double an overlay and offset one to the other a few pixels.
Need to be careful of curly serif features.

Fontsquirrel and Google web fonts have free ones to use.

Don't be limited by trying to MSOffice ... you can get a copy of Inkscape or Gimp for free, watch youtube videos on how to use.

Thanks for all your input. I've done another one but I want to let it sit for a few days before I ask opinions.

    Once again, thanks.

I just looked at the cover you have in the linked Google drive, the cat book.

My only suggestion is some sort of block type for the title instead of the scripty type, if only for readability on thumbnails.

The pic looks fine. The author name being scripty isn't bad, as its white color makes it clearly visible...

Maybe un-italicize the title at least? And a brighter color?

    Good luck with the book.

Definitely improved. Maybe orange is too close to her face colors but it's certainly more interesting and not just a boring background.

In any case, cover design can become perfectionists and you can never stop tweaking. I'd just get real feedback from putting up the book on sale and see how it does. If it works it works, if not, then you can do another round of tweaks on cover and blurb etc. People vote with their wallets so that is the ultimate feedback.

    Good luck!

    Probably because she's strangling him.

    Hi,

I like the cover, especially the last tweak. My only problem is that nothing about it says detective to me.

    Cheers, Greg.

    .

Pull out "The" into a separate text box so you can make it smaller and that lets "Happy Cat's" fill more of the top line and "Detective" can be larger on the next line. Does your graphics program have the ability to change text kerning? Squish the letters closer together and make them larger. Larger more readable title at thumbnail is the goal.

I'd also try a few different color shades for the title font. First try swapping the author and title font colors -- I think you'll get more cover 'pop' out of it. Sometimes putting a thin color shade layer over the whole image can quickly blend text and graphics better, but your software may not be able to do layers like that. Maybe a bit more yellow/orange in the title red, but experiment. Perhaps try a version swapping both the fonts and the colors between the title/author and see how that looks. Shrink your image on screen or walk ten or more feet away from the cover to see what a thumbnail will look like. As is, the tiny thumbnail of the cover shows the author most prominently and you really want the title center stage.

She does look like she has a choke-hold on the kitty. :D

The red doesn't look quite right with the rest of the cover. I think you are smart to think about these decisions for a couple of days.

Good luck with your book. :)

My first reaction is please don't. This does not look like a good cover.

I get no feeling for genre.
She looks kinda mischievous (romantic?), not like a cozy at all. Not like a detective.
Why is she strangling the cat while smirking?

The composition and design is really inadequate.
    The typography... just nope.

When you submit a print cover, you're stuck with it into infinity. You can swap a cover out, but the old cover will remain available and will show its ugly mug on your author page forever.

You can, by the way, use an ebook cover to make a print cover in one of the templates. You may need to adjust the size a bit (please don't stretch it). Someone with a bit of photoshop knowledge should be able to help you with this.

    Thanks again everybody.

Patty: Funny you should say that as I was looking at other images. My problem is she becomes an amateur sleuth two-thirds through the book. There's a touch of romance and she is also a vet. And she lives next to a cat's refuge where she helps out. It's a kind of multi-genre story and difficult to define exactly. There's also a hint of 'All Creatures Great and Small' in the story, which, by the way, is set in Spain. And there's also humour.

So, you can see my problem.

It sounds like you need to figure out which genre will give you the most readers and focus the cover to meet those expectations. It definitely has that "All Creatures Great and Small" vibe if I recall what the covers looked like WAAAY back when I had them.

It would be good to add another element... a big part of the cover is seen through a magnifying glass, or there is a splash of blood across it... or zodiac killer looking coded writing across the whole thing. Something to say mystery solver.

I had a lot of trouble nailing 'AI techno thriller' as a genre as there is a lot of 'are we living in a simulation' misdirection. I ended up abandoning all my brain and maze images and just went for creepy face in false colors with circuit boards around them.  Feels like you need to find your circuit boards element.
