Smashwords is 403 Forbidden
« on: May 20, 2020, 07:48:36 pm »
It's never a good sign when a book distributor is suddenly appearing as 403 Forbidden. I wonder what's going on at Smashwords.

    It's working now, fortunately.

I think I figured out what's going on. I use a VPN, in part so that I can see what natives see when they look at my books in different territories. I've used it for over a year. A few days ago, using a VPN has caused a 403 error at Smashwords. Interesting.

Yeah, I've played about with a VPN this month, and I've given it up except when I'm feeling self-conscious. It slowed my download speeds a lot, and worse, at Draft2Digital it kept triggering those awful Captcha images of sidewalks and traffic lights that I can seldom get right.

If I lived in Hong Kong, I'd use it all the time, but Mr Xi can't reach me here ... I think ....

Ive noticed a lot of attempted hacks on my own website coming from behind VPNs, so maybe Smashwords has some security setting to block similar attempts. Glad you figured it out and its working for you. Im just starting to use them again for more wide distribution to see if that helps sales go up.

Interesting. I use a VPN, and I hadn't had any trouble before, but it could be something new. I don't have any trouble with Amazon, either, except the emails every time I log in. Yes, it's me, and it's me logging into Google, too, crazy thing. Meh.

I just checked again using my VPN. The 403 message is gone. I guess they fixed whatever it was.
