What do you do when you're in a slump?
« on: July 01, 2020, 09:12:25 pm »
To relax, I mean.

Right now I feel like watching about two hours of The Honeymooners.

Hahaha. I'm so weird.

I go outside - take a walk or mess around in my garden.  :D

I agree with I Am A Unicorn.  I often go out for a walk near trees or gently focus on another hobby to take my mind off of writing.  It seems like it helps me to clear up some of the things causing a slump and let's my subconscious work through story details.

I am an "energetic rotating relaxer" - i.e. I always have a lineup. If I don't feel like writing, I quickly switch to maybe creating a cover for my next book, or fiddle with my ads, or write a blurb, or get on XBOX and yell at all those pathetic, useless, incompetent members on my team or the cheating, clearly-advantaged, awful people on the other side (if they're winning, they're cheating, and if they're losing, it's because of me), or go for a walk, or listen to music and dance awfully embarrassing my kid, or watch something... I never let a slump get to me :)

I work on my websites and my newsletter.

Lately, though, if the morning is fairly cool I'll brush-hog the woods and fields, of which we have 42 acres.

I change hats.  Do more promotions, maybe redo a cover or two, try a new type of social media.  And away from all this, I play with the kittens, get out in the garden, go for a walk, watch a movie. :)

Anything besides sit in front of my computer -- walk my dog, bake something, exercise. I find that taking my mind off writing helps, and then I can return refreshed to whatever I'm working on.

I go straight to Anne Rice for any inspirational podcasts and instruction videos. I just can't veer away from anything writer related. Admittedly, it is tiring. I will resort to some W.C. Fields or Laurel and Hardy films just to boost my mood and change my outlook.

Physical activity is always good for a creative slump. Especially something that gets you out of your head like partner dancing or learning new choreo.

    Thanks, everybody.

For me, the hard part is the promotion and just that. stuff.

Sometimes you just have to step away.

I am not a sales person at all and I never claimed to be. I can't stand that aspect of writing but there you have it. Somebody has to do it.
