review question
« on: July 13, 2020, 04:07:53 pm »
Hey all,

I was just wondering if it was possible to get Amazon to transfer existing customer reviews to an new edition of a book (new ASIN) due to a slightly different author name.

Appreciate any responses!

Cheers

I haven't done it, but I've read that you can write to them and ask and they will do it, but I'm not sure how identical all the details have to be. Worth a try.

I tried that and for some reason they would do it. they said the title and author had to be the same to transfer the reviews. I wouldn't know how to go about it.

Never actually tried that, but I would think it would be doubtful.

    An update on this --

Amazon said they're open to transferring reviews to new ASINs provided the vast majority of content is the same. My understanding is that it would be a special courtesy and not standard policy. In any case, here is the response in case I have it wrong:

If you are concerned about changing the author name for a Kindle books alone, there is no need of re-publishing it with a new ASIN. Our system will allow you to make those respective changes. However, irrespective of the system letting you do or not, if you just wanted to unpublish your old version and republish it, please note that, all the reviews will get transferred to the new submission, once we link them.

Since you've mentioned that the changes are also minor, they will stay linked.

In the case of a paperback, since Title, Subtitle, Primary author name etc will be locked once the book is LIVE, you might have to unpublish and republish it as a new submission altogether. Again, we will be able to link the old and new versions as long as the title, subtitle and most of the book's content match.

Though author name is also expected to be matching, since you've mentioned that the change is minor, linking the old and new versions should work.

Please let us know if there's a hindrance in this process. Though the author field is locked from your end, we can request our technical team to change the author name for your paperback as a one-time exception.

We'd be glad to assist you in case of difficulty.

Well, that was indeed more positive than what I got. They told me the title and author had to be the same to make the transfer of the old reviews. there was no mention of content. Of course, this was a trad published book, so I wonder if that had something to do with it.
