Sideways into a Bestseller
« on: July 19, 2020, 05:11:50 am »
Among my many eclectic interests are homesteading/gardening/independent living.  When I jumped into raising chickens this past spring, I discovered Justin Rhodes' YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOSGEokQQcdAVFuL_Aq8dlg - highly recommended).  I was watching Justin's latest video last night and right at the end he mentioned another YouTuber - Jessica Sowards, who has a channel called Roots and Refuge Farm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guKtTvlGzL8.  The reason he mentioned her was because she is writing what appears to be her first book.

The First Time Gardener: Growing Vegetables is on pre-order at Amazon, with a release date of next February (https://www.amazon.com/First-time-Gardener-Vegetables-encouragement-First-Time/dp/0760368724/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=first+time+gardener%3A+growing+vegetables&qid=1595150107&sr=8-3 ).  What astonished me is that despite a number of considerable headwinds - including a pre-order date way in the future, first-time author, a somewhat light page count, and almost no advertising - Ms. Sowards soon-to-be title is presently number 62 among all books on Amazon!  Apparently, her few-seconds, almost embarrassed, mention in her video that I linked above was sufficient to send a whole bunch of her 363K YouTube subscribers scurrying over to her Amazon pre-order page.

So there you go.  If all the classic author-oriented strategies we talk about around here aren't sufficient to launch your book into the stratosphere... consider perhaps first building an audience on YouTube or one of the other social media platforms.  Think of it as a mailing list on steroids.

And a reminder that, at the end of the day, visibility probably matters more than everything else combined.

That's a great story, and a good reminder of YouTube's power - as is this article: https://workingauthors.com/2020/01/27/social-media-book-marketing/
