Submitting ARC sequels. Do you include prior books?
« on: August 04, 2020, 12:12:57 pm »
Just that. And, if you've done it, how did you do it?

For those who've submitted ARCs for sequels, do you include the prior book? And, if you do, how do you organize the file? Put the prior book in the back? Separate out with a copy of the cover? Looking for any advice on this. I've got a Hidden Gems coming up and they advise that for a non-stand-alone series, all books prior are included. My sequel can work as a stand-alone, but I was considering adding the prior book anyway.

    Simple answer: no.

If mean, if someone actively requests it I'm happy to provide it (almost never happens), but when it comes to ARC reviews, they get the book they signed up to read.

That makes sense to me. I review a lot of books -- always non-fiction, though, so sequels never come into the equation -- and would be very surprised if I got two books instead of the one I asked for, and even more surprised if it were three or more. I'd have a feeling that I was being played. It's hard enough as it is to break the news to a publicist that I won't be reviewing her (or less often, his) company's book.

I think it's also a statement about the strength of the book / author.

I've read / watched sequels before without seeing the first. A bit of confusion at the beginning is normal.  But by a couple of chapters in, the story should be humming along, drawing the reader with it to the point where they might be curious to read what's come before, but not absolutely lost.

Seriels are one thing, but the individual stories within series should stand on their own IMHO.  Maybe arrogant of me to say, but if someone is so lost that they're halfway through the book and have zero idea what's going on, then that might indicate a failure of the storytelling and might be indicative of how the ARC reviewer should review it.

I never have. And really most of my ARC readers have read the earlier books anyway.
