Which Kindle is just simple ereader?
« on: October 20, 2020, 11:31:27 am »
We got the mother-in-law a PaperWhite for Christmas 2013 or 2014. She needs more storage, but she likes her Kindle to just read ebooks. Doesn't need any bells or whistles, just lots of storage. Which Kindle would be the best? Thanks.

Both the basic Kindle and the Paperwhite are good options. All of the e-readers lack "bells and whistles", unless you consider the buttons to be in that category. :)

You can get a PW with up to 32 GB. Although I don't recall ever using up all the space on any Kindle - but I also don't keep EVERY book on the device. I typically have at the most maybe 5 books.

For me, the PW has PLENTY of storage. Keep in mind you don't need to keep ALL your books on it at the same time. As long as you can regularly connect to a WiFi network, you can have access to everything in your library pretty quickly.

As for storage, if you go to amazon and look at any kindle page, you can scroll down a bit and see a comparison of the various models. It looks like the current PW is available with either 8 GB or 32 GB of storage. If she has an older PW, it might only have 4.

The Oasis also is available with either 8 or 32 GB, but that's a lot more money for the device. For most, I'd say the PW is the best value, but if price is consideration, the basic Kindle is still a nice device and if her old PW only has 4 GB, that would still double the storage.

Kimberly and Ann, thanks for your replies. I just wanted a starting point before I perused Amazon. They have so many choices there that I get lost. LOL Thanks!!

As mentioned, does she need more storage or does she need to manage the storage she has? Prior to doing a hard reset I had about 500 titles on my 8gb Oasis. A few were "The Complete Works of" Conan-Doyle, Twain, Verne etc. so really a lot more than 500. That only used about 20% of my space. It's convenient to just have it automatically load every new book purchase direct to the Kindle but that fills it up with more books than one can possibly read. Have new purchases go to the Kindle Cloud and then put a few dozen into the Kindle, removing them when they've been read and adding more periodically.

Does she remove the ones she's finished reading? That may be a solution all on its own.

Be sure to consider whether or not she needs, or would like, the higher res screen of PW (or Oasis).

A lot of people need, or find it much easier & more pleasant, to have higher res, whether because of "older eyes & getting more so", early cataract development, or other vision problems.

I wouldn't get the basic Kindle now for myself unless that were the only choice, but am happy with the (2017?) PW as a carry-around-reader, though I do most of my Kindle reading on an Oasis when at home -- I like the off-white screen option + slightly larger screen; the page-turn-buttons are an added plus.

(on the Treadmill, & for graphic novels or newspaper, I use an iPad)

I loaned my PW4 to a friend some months ago. He returned it yesterday. Wow, it is tiny compared to my Oasis. I'd forgotten how much smaller it is. It isn't any lighter though. Maybe that's just the different cases and I'm sure on a postage or baby scale there would be some/many grams difference in weight but in left/right hand balancing they are the same or the Oasis is a hint lighter.

Thanks for asking that. I will have to check with her.

Thanks. She has very bad arthritis in her hands, so lighter may be better.

but in left/right hand balancing they are the same or the Oasis is a hint lighter.

You would need an accurate scale to tell any weight difference I think. They probably give exact weight on the website in the specs.

When you decide what she is going to read on you can investigate a stand for when she reads at a desk or table.  I have use this one for years from Amazon.  https://www.amazon.com/TechMatte-Multi-Angle-Aluminum-Readers-Smartphones/dp/B00HHEAMXC/ref=sr_1_3?crid=QYSMMR3RXCZ4&dchild=1&keywords=tech+matte+stand&qid=1603404394&sprefix=tech+natte%2Caps%2C202&sr=8-3

I am sure there are others but with any of them she only has to touch the side of the screen to turn the pages.  Much easier with arthritic hands as I have learned.
    Its unlucky to be superstitious.
