New Word Game--the UNscrabble Alterran Scrabble Game...
« on: August 23, 2010, 08:48:09 am »
OKAY--we tried to play Scrabble but without a board it was difficult. Despite Brew's best efforts in sending us Scrabble boards, the multi-dimensional concept was just too daunting. SO...there's a new game afoot!

Suppose I start off with a word: 'ALTERRA'. The last three letters (RRA) must appear in the next word. Suppose Brew responds with 'ARRAH!' (An expression of disgust.) He gets credit for the word, plus five bonus points because the letters appear in the same order. I might also give a couple for obscurity on that one. The next player (whoever responds first) will come up with a new word containing the letters 'RAH'. They do NOT have to be in the same order. Example: Say Winter comes back with 'HATTERAS' (from Fire-heart). She gets credit for the word, plus five for a character name, but no bonus for 'order' because the letters are not in the same order. The next player must use the letters 'RAS'--perhaps 'SALASTOR' from 'Ravenshade' would fill that one. Five extra for character name. Next word must use 'TOR' and so on.

You will receive points for obscurity and relevance in Alterra. Character and place names are allowed and get FIVE bonus points each.

Words must appear in one of the three books.

I am 'she who decides extra points for obscurity and relevance'.

The first word is 'FARAHIN'.
First player must therefore provide a word including letters 'HIN'--bonus for character/place name and for letters in same order.

Let the game begin!!  :D

Archer -- been a long time since I played Scrabble -- can the free space get used for any letter?

Surely the word "gain" is in the books.  I don't have my Kindle with me so I can't search.  :-\

Free space can be used for any letter!  :)

'Gain' is undoubtedly in the books. Free space is still open! Brewie gets six points for 'Gain'

    New tiles are: H, F, W, T, A, E, L
(Next player can use the free space, but will have to incorporate one of Brew's letters, too. (G, A, I, or N)

Remember...character and place names get extra points!

Tip, I'm guessing it is 1 point for each of e, a and i and 2 points for L.  No points for the N since it is free space (blank tile gets no points).

Actually I was looking at 1 point each for e, l, a, and i , no points for n.  Total 4 points (I guess it doesn't qualify for the 5 bonus points for being a character though  :( )

But I was also looking at G=2, A=1, I=1 and N=1 and trying to figger out how that got to be 6?

And, the MAIN reason -- I also was poking at Archer because, well, because its FUN!  ;D  (ohhh, bet that's gonna cost me points!!)

But then again she did say "I am 'she who decides extra points for obscurity and relevance'. " so maybe's we both got bonus points!!   ;D

    A few points to remember:
    1. Archer is mathematically challenged.
    2. Anyone can play any time and one does not have to wait one's turn.
    3. Once in a while I'll have a double word score or triple word or letter score.
    4. This game is a lot like 'Fizzbin'--especially when it's dark on Tuesday!

    T,F,H,E,I,N aaaaannnnd K!

(Remember that you must incorporate a letter from one of the previous words--not necessarily the most recent one)
I'm making a makeshift 'board' on paper so I can keep track.

'Elani' is a general term referring to Elves--perhaps we should include ALL proper names as bonus words!
Okay, Mr. Tips--you've got your 5-point bonus!

Okay...now that I have a board, I can state that Tip's 'AWOKE gets him a bunch of points!
The 'W' is a double letter score which means it's worth 8 by itself. Add the rest and you get 8 more=16 points!

Brew, not to be outdone, put his K on a double word score. (Gasp!) Plus, he gets 5 big ones for the proper name! I calculate twenty-one points for 'Kino'.

Ahhh, but your 'R' is on a double-letter score, as is your 'T'. So you get...eight points plus five for proper name. That's thirteen?
    Not too shabby.

Tip, I have the words played so far just written in a grid to keep track of where they are.  Given that, I think the "o" in abode will end up right in front of gain creating "ogain".  Is that what you have down, Archer?  I need to transfer them to the board I sent Archer, but haven't printed it off yet.  If you want to PM me your email I'll send it your direction too.

GAAAH! Archer has the flu! Hit me like a freight train last night. I'm pretty wobbly today, and I'm not going in to school. However, I did bring my scrabble board.

Brew, I think you're right! Let's send Tip a board so he can visualize. I had trouble, too, which is why I started a grid. But the board is so much fun because of the double-letter scores and such. ABODE would be a pretty good word...I think Tip can fit it in elsewhere!

He sent me one but it'll be real late tonight before I can get some time to do anything with it.

BUT, since we seemed to run everything upwards from the original GAIN perhaps ABODE will work going down from that A?

I tried to transfer all the words over to the board but need to know where you started the first word (gain).  Also, the board I sent didn't have a legend and I don't have a real board to look at for comparison (at work).  What are you using for each color?

      LET THE GAME BEGIN!

      Here's your first word:

      'FARAHIN'

First player must use letters 'HIN'. Bonus for character/place names and for getting letters in same order.

(You do know "hin" by itself is the word for "Rain", yes?  8))

I'll start with Cos-domhain...not in the same order, but first outta the chute is always a challenge.

(You do know "hin" by itself is the word for "Rain", yes?  8))

I'll start with Cos-domhain...not in the same order, but first outta the chute is always a challenge.

So if I understand correctly the lette3rs are AIN

      So, I'll go with AINCOR.

Brian--yes, the letters ARE in the same order. Well done! An extra five for you, and an extra five for Tip, too!
      You guys are too fast.

Looks like COR are the next three. Good luck!

      Jump start time again!!

Okay we'll toss up Orogond and Galador's pack horse Cronan -- not in order but the right letters C O R.

That would make the next set be N A N

Ok, I'm going to play Finan and suggest a rule change...Finan keeps the same last letters "nan", right?

What if we changed the rules of the game to be the next player has to use "any" three letters in the previous name?  It would make the ball roll faster, no?  Too fast?  It would prevent the same letters going turn over turn tho.  I'll shutup now.  :-X

Hey Brew -- how bout we morph it so that any three letters are fair game so long as they appear in order?

For example, I'd take the F I N and offer up Faladinn -- containing F I N in that order (but not required to be adjacent).  Otherwise, I'll still offer it up since it contains NAN just not in order.  :) :)

We'll have to wait till Archer gets done playing with the fine young lasses at the Woods and comes to visit again.
Ah yes, the memories of playing with the fine young lasses of the Woods!  :D (I went to an all male (at the time) college not far from the Woods and we certainly enjoyed playing with the fine young lasses of the Woods!!)  ;D

      TIP! (ahem!)

(I'm sure they enjoyed playing with you, too. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.)

Take this game and morph it! The faster the ball rolls, the better. And I say, just play--don't worry about order or points (though the really obscure will deserve special mention). After all, Elves just wanna have fun!

Sure but you also need to follow the morphed rules Archer (puhlease don't pick up your game and go home, dear one!  :P ) -- pick 3 letters in a row from the last word and use them in the new one in order....

      Finan -- FIN -- Faladinn
      Faladinn -- LAD -- Alamand
      Alamand -- LAM -- Farath-talam

So, for example, one could offer up

      Farath-talam -- ALA -- Alduinar

Okay -- have at it!  :D

      Alduinar is in play.

Ooh! Can we make it a requirement that we answer in verse?
Might not be easy, but it could be worse...

        (ahem!)

Rama was the name Finan once bore,
He lost his Prince in a long-forgotten war.
The Moonflower took Finan from his pain,
And he met his Prince again on the heavenly plain.

(Do I get extra points for using ALL the letters?) :)

Imprisoned he was in Dun Arian
But value in Ishtar did Hallagond see

The savior of the city he did come to be

Alterra is a land of the strong and the true,
one best explored with a map and a brew,
while adventures abound for the young and the old,
I'll take my map new and I'll take my brew cold.

        Halrodin I'm sure would agree,
(If Gorgon hadn't sliced him from his neck to his knee)
So here's a new map and an ice cold brew,
Some boots made for walkin' and a warm cloak, too.
I'll take a fast horse and a nice hot meal,
throw in some honey and you've got yourself a DEAL!

        A brew for you
        a brew for me
        The bird we
        hope we do not see

        For if we do
        Its not with glee
        For who should we
        Expect to see?

        Why it's Ikari
        and his beloved Karatsu

Oh my, is that a double?

        Wow! NOW we've got illustrations!
        I am not worthy.
         ;)

        Tip-the-bold has raised the standard!
A double word score (as he wittily bantered).
And to boot, we've got a raven's dark form.
I'd say that goes far beyond the norm!

Sorry...I was brewing last night ;D and didn't have a chance to sign on.

An Elvish king named Farahin was once the king of all,
He left no heirs to take his place when he was but to fall,
Was known as wise and I'd say that's true since Gaelen he did snare,
But Galen had not met me yet or it'd be me she'd pledged to care.   :-*

          Farin is a Dwarven smith
His prowess is the stuff of myth
The ring he made for Rosalin

          His teeth were like swords
          His claws were like daggers
          Scales he had many
          And spines on his tail

          His color was Scarlet
          Spouting fire from his gullet
          What havoc did he wreak
          Upon all who could speak

          But Fesok he met
          The Iron Bearded King
          Fearless and strong
          With smarts come along

          Now Cos-domonhain stands
          Upon the great lands
          Where Redruin came
          To lose his great claim

Man, this is getting harder!  I'll be away from the 'puter all weekend -- running away -- running up to Vintage Illinois Winefest!

(psst! Hey, Brew! Should I mention that Redruin has been used before? Naahhh...Tip's rhyme is so fine, I can't bear to tell him!)

Elraen was once a happy young heart,
Until Wrothgar's pits tore her soul apart.
Her mind was gone; her spirit was dark,
Her eyes without life or vital spark.
When she left her love, his heart did break,
And for him she did Galador mistake.
As she drew her last breath, he came once more,
And took her away to Elysia's shore.

I'd let sleeping Raven's lie, Archer...his rhymes are stellar!  Besides, I think both of us have used names twice ourselves.   8)

Orogond lie there counting star by star,
He'd being doing the same all night so far,
The sun was rising in the East don't you know,
And he'd not slept a wink since he'd laid down low.

He couldn't understand what kept him from sleep,
But then he remembered...he'd drank far too deep,
He'd been really tired, he'd felt almost dead,
'til the kaffa from El-Morah's cafe' before bed.

(to the tune of 'Geen Acres')

Greeeeeeeen Mountains are a place of fame,
          Monadh-ailan is their Elvish name.
Peaks stretching out so tall and wide,
Gotta get past 'em so all day we must ride!

          (da-dum-de-da-dum)

          Gaelen: 'Let's GO!'

          (da-dum-de-da-dum)

          Fima: 'This BLOWS!'

          (da-dum-de-da-dum)

          Eros: 'Nice grass!

          They're really not that hairy,
          Yet people find them scary,
They do not like the sun at all,
Some are big and some are tall,
          I think perhaps they're misunderstood,
But please, not in my neighborhood.

Now who's this I blabber on about?
It's Olcas friend, without a doubt!

Realm of Great Learning standing alone.
Your King has fallen, the Gates given way,
Wrothgar's Legions advance on this dark, dark day.
Fair Dardis is lost, Leiras, too.

Mother Rosalin, a river beauty she was, And Orogond's mom

I'n baaack!! -- and I see you've all be pleasantly creative whilst I was away swilling the elixirs of the grape.
Weather did not cooperate but a wine, errr, fine time was had by all!
Rainy in the morning but it stopped in time and it was just overcast in the afternoon -- kept it cool though. Came back with 2 1/2 cases to add to the cellar. Hmm, maybe buying a house with an 8x8 chilled wine cellar was NOT a good idea!   :D

Some say Aontar drew the wave
that bore it to the sand,
For brave Salasin took his precious lore
          And founded Dun Arian.

          The Silver City prospered there,
          And there it stands today.
As a monument to the knowledge
          Which none could take away.

          The ale it doth flow
          and the honey astound
          The Elves gather round
          and the stories abound
          As the sun peaks atop
          and Risolas comes round

In the dry, parched earth of the Raavi-Shan
was the thief they searched from dusk to dawn,
just half a face was left of him,
the ravens feast had done him in.

A skin lay just outside his reach,
perhaps a nasty lesson to teach,
he died alone and thirsty too,
but what else is a wicked Spider to do?

Gaelen and Nelwyn came on him late,
they cursed revenge they'd now not sate,
but when done they'd no longer dread,
the sight of Cuidag who'd lost his head.   ;D

          P.S.  Forgot to mention...WELCOME BACK, Tip!   ;)

          Ri-solas? Extra points for obscurity!!
           :D

Brew--your rhyme is sublime! Cuidag was a scag.
Dead is the best way he can be--as you let us all see.

          How's this for obscure?

Aran is a friend long lost,
Whose gruesome death came at great cost.
          For Gaelen's hair, like ginger-gold,
          Will never Orogond enfold.
She tears it short with blade of steel,
It frames bright eyes with wild appeal.
But never will he lose his soul
Engulfed in hair of ginger-gold. :-\

Lost and shivering out of her mind
Made mad by the evil she had bore
The one the scouts they did come to find
The one who was the loved of Galdor
That love she had held did make her bind
To Nelwyn's dear mate sweet Galador
In the troop some kindness she would find
and healing come from the Eolar
Dona she was since being maligned
In truth she was known an elfen star
As Gaelen and Nelwyn would remind
And once again her mind would unbar
She was to become desert enshrined
Elraen's tale is one without par

          Noooooooo!    :-[  :-[  :-[

We didn't mean to get out of hand with the game -- c'mon back and play -- rhymes are NOT required!  ;)

Okay Elraen was last up so I'll offer up

          Eadram

A reminder -- all you need do is pick 3 letters in the last name and find a new name with those letters in it in order (do not need to be adjacent though) and you've done it.

Take a shot at it Geoff  :D

Ha! Geoff does fly-bys occasionally, but he rarely stays. I wave and blow him a kiss  :-* and then wait patiently for his next appearance.
