Is there a list of cover artists for hire anywhere?
« on: October 06, 2010, 05:27:46 am »
I've now written and edited and published a novel for Kindle, but have been holding back on doing my own cover art, and still resistant to it. I could do a decent job, but if hiring out for it is reasonably priced, why not save the time and effort and let a pro do it?

Is there a list somewhere of reasonable cover artists for hire?

thanks,
John

Check elance.com. That's what I use. Others will recommend digging through deviantart.com

I commissioned the artwork for VoV through deviantart.com. My other two covers were done by the KB's own RonnellDPorter, who is VERY reasonable. I hope to use Ronnell for my next cover as well.

My guy is Timothy Lantz.  He's not cheap, but I feel he's worth it; his artwork is fantastic.  His website:  http://www.stygiandarkness.com/

Best guy around is Ronnel D. Porter. His fee (last I checked, though he's in more demand lately) is only $50, flat fee.

Ronnell did all three of my covers and they really are wonderful.  I've never contracted anyone at deviantart, but I've seen the work over there and there is a lot of talent there.

Reining In and Phantom Rising are only 99 on Amazon Kindle.

My brother, Don Michael, Jr., did my covers. You can check out his work at:

I've been enjoying a lot of covers on this board, and I was just about to post about cover artists. I would love to find someone to do the covers for my next series--mysteries--at a reasonable rate. Thanks for posting the above artists. Anyone else out there? I love choices.

You could contact my artist, Jesse Young.  I'm not sure what he'd charge due to the fact that we have a special contract, but he's a fantastic, fantastic talent.

The graphic designer who did my recent cookbook (not a Kindle book) was sheer genius. A lot of people are buying it because it LOOKS so great, inside and out.

I don't know what she charges for freelance work, but she's amazing.

I recommend Jeroen ten Berg--he is fast, imaginative and very reasonable. He's done covers for me--does covers for Blake Crouch, and recently did the cover for Draculas!

Plus he loves books and is incredibly supportive--reads everything submitted to him for artwork, and collects books (asked me for a signed manuscript of a novel I wrote for his collection, since it's an ebook). He comes up with ideas quickly, makes changes fast. I can't say enough--he's simply great.

My friend Lindsay Birmingham has done both of mine and she's very reasonable. She's a photographer at heart, so if you're looking for a photo-based cover, she might be someone to look at. Check out www.lindsaybirmingham.com.

Wow! Those are some wonderful artists. I would love to work with a cover artists, but I worried that the cost would be prohibitive. Did you find it was worth the financial outlay?

Flip through the posts of the last couple of months. (I know it will take a while) IIRC there were a couple of graphic artists who came in and posted about wanting to expand their offerings into cover art, and they were willing to go very low on pricing.. (I think 1 was looking pro bono, but I may be wrong).

Ronnell has done great covers for many kindle board members, I think, he still only charges $50. I may be wrong, but I don't think we does original drawings. I think he manipulates stock photos, but for most covers that works. He also can assist if you don't know exactly what you want.

I have an artist I can recommend. His prices vary depending on what you want done, but generally range in the $75-100 range. Here's his deviantart gallery:
    http://blewh.deviantart.com/gallery/

Deviantart is great if you have a good idea of what you want. My cover for Monster Mashup only cost $25.
it is possible to get burned there though. Don't pay more than 50% down, make sure they know you are going to ask for some minor revisions. Also, sure you let them know what you want rights you want, as at these prices they retain the copyright and use the images in their portfolios.

I'm not sure how tacky it is to advertise myself but hi :)

And to clarify: some covers are original and from scratch, for example David Dalglish's Guardian of the Mountain, Jessica Billimgs' The Girl Born of Smoke, my own cover Oceania, and many, many others. Some are stock photos. Some are pictures of friends. Some are a mix of both.

I assume you charge extra if you're doing original artwork? Can you give us an idea of how much?
