Is this a crack?
« on: September 29, 2011, 08:50:38 am »
It's small, doesn't seem to be spreading and I don't actually notice it while reading. I just worry that it is a crack and will eventually get worse.

here is the link to that picture in a bigger size so you can see it better.

and on this pic, it shows it right below the word attention

Have you tried to brush it away with a clean kleenex or paper towel? Maybe it's just a fuzz.

It's not just something on the screen. It's been there for a week or so.

The Kindle screen has (AFAIK) a layer of glass with a layer of plastic on the front. A bit like a laminated windscreen but inside out (they have two layers of glass with plastic inbetween).

Can you feel it on the screen with a fingernail?

If you can then it's on the surface - might be something stuck on there or might be a chip or scratch in the plastic.

If you can't feel it then I suspect it might be a tiny chip in the glass which has not damaged the plastic - a bit like a stone chip in a windscreen.

If it's in the glass, then like a stone chip there is a chance it will spread.

What you do depends on your warranty - if it's pretty new you might want to wait a while and see what happens, if it's nearing the end of the warranty I'd be tempted to ask Amazon to replace it.

Thank you for your help. I can not feel it with my fingernail or anything. My warranty is up in February, but I still may call support and ask some questions. I hate to have to get a new one though because redoing collections and stuff doesn't sound fun.

    Thanks for your help again!

If all or most of your books are from Amazon, then putting your collections on the new Kindle won't be difficult. Once you've downloaded your books, just import your collections from the old device and all your books (the Amazon ones anyway) will slot back into their collections.

Thanks again for your help. I called tonight and they are replacing my Kindle as well as refunding the price of my skin ( because they don't have it in stock anymore, so they can't just replace it) so that I don't ruin it by transferring it to the replacement Kindle.

That's a good result, I'm glad you got a replacement. Now you'll have the fun of choosing a new skin for it.  ;D

When you say they are replacing your Kindle, are they giving you a new one or a refurbished one?  I'm glad they are doing something for you!  And that they are reimbursing you for the skin, too.

I don't know. He didn't specify. I assume its a refurbished one, but I really don't care as long as it works and has no scratches or cracks ;).

In general, you can expect a refurbished device if it's over 30 days old.  Some people do get new ones, but I think that's only because they didn't have any refurbs on hand! :D  And, anyway, a refurbished unit has been thoroughly checked so there shouldn't be a problem.  And, if there is, Amazon will replace IT. ::)

I wonder if the E-ink layer can get damaged and "frozen" in a spot, that's almost what that looks like

Could be.  But when there's a crack, it kind of does the same thing.
