Geemont has chosen some great banned/censored books for you to vote on for our December book-of-the-month club. Sample the books and be sure to come back here and place your vote! Voting will be open for 2 weeks.

1. The Master and Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov, $7.17, 432 pages

Censored by the Soviet Union upon publication in 1967: 12% of the text was removed and still more changed.  The English translations were incomplete, based on the censored version, until 1996 and 2001.

WikiPedia:

The Master and Margarita is a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, woven around the premise of a visit by the Devil to the fervently atheistic Soviet Union. Many critics consider the book to be one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, and one of the foremost Soviet satires, directed against a suffocatingly bureaucratic social order.

2. Grendel - John Gardner, $9.99 Kindle Edition, 192 pages

Banned for graphic scenes involving the Danish queen in which the monster visualizes torture and mutilation.

WikiPedia:

Grendel is a 1971 parallel novel by American author John Gardner. It is a retelling of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf from the perspective of the antagonist, Grendel. The novel deals with finding meaning in the world, the power of literature and myth, and the nature of good and evil.

3. Song of Solomon - Toni Morrison, $11.99, 352 pages

Banned for language degrading to blacks, violent imagery, sexually explicit and profane language, and depictions of sexuality. It has been accused of promoting a "homosexual" agenda.

Overview from BN.com

Milkman Dead was born shortly after a neighborhood eccentric hurled himself off a rooftop in a vain attempt at flight. For the rest of his life he, too, will be trying to fly. With this brilliantly imagined novel, Toni Morrison transfigures the coming-of-age story as audaciously as Saul Bellow or Gabriel Garca Mrquez. As she follows Milkman from his rustbelt city to the place of his familys origins, Morrison introduces an entire cast of strivers and seeresses, liars and assassins, the inhabitants of a fully realized black world.

4. The Satanic Verses - Salman Rushdie, $11.99, 576 pages

Banned for criticism of Islam and blasphemy to the prophet Mohammed.

Amazon.com Review

No book in modern times has matched the uproar sparked by Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses, which earned its author a death sentence. Furor aside, it is a marvelously erudite study of good and evil, a feast of language served up by a writer at the height of his powers, and a rollicking comic fable. The book begins with two Indians, Gibreel Farishta ("for fifteen years the biggest star in the history of the Indian movies") and Saladin Chamcha, a Bombay expatriate returning from his first visit to his homeland in 15 years, plummeting from the sky after the explosion of their jetliner, and proceeds through a series of metamorphoses, dreams and revelations.

Unless I'm somehow mistaken, Song of Solomon is the December Book Klub pick.  I hope readers enjoy it.
