Title: Fire HD 7" - First Impressions
Post by: Ann in Arlington on September 14, 2012, 11:36:08 am
Very nice styling. . .quite sleek.

The physical size is a bit wider and only very slightly taller than the original Fire.  While still a 7" diagonal screen, the proportions are slightly different.  Original Fire is 3 9/16 x 6 1/16.  HD is 3 12/16 x 5 15/16.  You'll notice it most obviously if you open the same book on both.

The screen definition is very nice.  I'm downloading a video just now to see how it looks.

Yes, I could stream, and I will later, but I wanted to get an idea of how much space things might take up.

There is a welcome letter from Jeff bezos and when you have that showing in the carousel, the suggestions below it include a User Guide.  Which appears to be interactive, rather than a 'document' or PDF file. . . .more like an app. It's also readily available when you select 'more' from the menu along the top -- it's under 'help and feedback'.

There are more categories now. . . .Ship, Games, Apps, Books, Music, Videos, Newstand, Audiobooks, Web, Photos, Docs, and Offers.  You can toggle between the book cover view and a list view which has a smaller thumbnail and the full title.  Oh. . .gee. . .that was on the original Fire too.  Guess I didn't use it much.

There is text to speech. . . . .the same choices of font size and font style, but they're accessed slightly differently.  The 'sepia' is slightly darker. . .but nice. . . .

There's an auto brightness that there didn't used to be.. . . and there's FB integration now. . .so I'm thinking it'll be shareable when you get to the end of a book like you can do on an eInk Kindle.

You can change the speed, but it seems to be a female voice only. . . . have to see if I can find out how to change it to a male voice.

Watching the show now.  Video is great.  Sound is certainly superior.

More in a bit.

Thank you so much for your impressions.

Two questions:

1. How "heavy" does it feel? I felt the original KF felt heavier than an iPad 2, which is unacceptable considering how much bigger the latter is.

2. How is the sound on something like Netflix streaming or Amazon instant video? I found the original KF was never loud enough with those two apps (yet games and such were loud). The new speakers are supposed to be much better. Are they?

O.K. So, I can't check on the HDMI until the man comes home and helps me figure out how to do that. Main thing is to find the HDMI cable. ;)

But I have successfully gotten it to talk to my bluetooth keyboard so yay for that.

They no longer have the gear for the drop down menu along the top. . .you just swipe down to open it and swipe up to close.

The carousel is not as obviously off set from the bottom section. The suggested items in the lower part relate directly to whatever book or other thing that is front and center on the carousel.

The lock screen ad has so far been  nothing objectionable.  On the home screen there's a small text ad at the very bottom. . . very unobtrusive.

Having some delay with the BT keyboard, but beats typing on the touch screen.

I am really liking it and am even more excited about the larger screen model! :D

It is not, it seems to me, as heavy as the first  Fire. Definitely thinner.

The sound seems fine to me, but I didn't use video that much on the other one.

Found that the only TTS voice is female.  It's not bad, but I'd rather listen to a male voice.  That's just personal preference.

It arrived with software version 7.1.0 and just now updated to 7.1.5.

One of the first offers was $5 for music . . . . must be used by Sept 24.

The carousel does not have ALL my content. . . .only the last few dozen books.  New things purchased does show up at the front of the carousel as it did with the original Fire.  All my books are shown in the 'cloud' under the 'books' tab.  I'm not sure that's a bug or a feature. . . .but it doesn't bother me one way or the other.

Still no collections. . . . at least, not that I've found yet.

Oh, and the line spacing option is no longer available when reading a book.

I just got mine :)  Looks like a very small iPad, does not feel heavy at all :)  I haven't done much with it but I like the female text to speech voice!  You can also speed her up to like 4X.  I like to listen to audiobooks on 2X so that makes me happy ;)

Thanks so much for all the information, Ann!

Oh, and the line spacing option is no longer available when reading a book.

I have no idea how it works on the Fire, but you may not see a line spacing option because you have the book set to "publisher default" for text. I dunno.

Enjoy your new toy!!!

Post by: Ann in Arlington on September 14, 2012, 01:29:01 pm
I'm not seeing an option to use 'publisher default' or not.  I've opened different books. . . .both self pub and big pubs.  The option's not there.  It IS there on the same books on the older Fire.

The option IS there on eInk kindles -- for line spacing that is -- no 'publisher default'.  I have had books I opened on an eInk device that didn't have all the options available. . . I assumed that was something the publisher did.  And I don't usually like it. ::)

I also haven't found the line spacing thing either.

I really like this so far.  I thought I'd be returning it but it might be a keeper!

I immediately bought out of the special offers.  I didn't mind them on my eink Kindle, but for some reason, I didn't like them on my Fire.  Maybe it's the full color of them  ???.

But overall, I'm loving it.  I'm surprised at how nice the speakers sound.  For a tablet, its pretty nice.  Nicer than the speakers on my netbook.

I started watching Hunger Games and the video was crisp, clean, and there was no lag.

Tetris is free on the Amazon appstore today, so I downloaded and played that too.

I'm highly impressed so far.

I've not decided about the special offers.  So far the lock screen pictures haven't been objectionable.  I actually really like the one for Titanic!  Nice image of the ship. ;)

And on the home page there's only two lines of text that says

Read Harry Potter for free
with Amazon Prime

As far as I can tell that hasn't changed.  The lock images do change however.

Oh, and I learned a new thing: when you're on the web, and look at the menu, one of the options is to not have the page automatically go on the carousel.  I like that and it wasn't on the last one.  Forwhatever reason, I don't mind apps and books and movies in the carousel, but don't like web pages.  They look funny. :o :D

I kind of like the special offers because I am interested in things like "if you like this, your might like..."

The video has been kind of choppy for me.  The sound is great!

After a couple of hours playing with it, I like mine a whole lot. I just opted out of the special offers. My mom has them on her e-ink, but I don't think she has ever noticed them. They were starting to bother me already. What's REALLY bothering me is the "customers also bought" that runs along the bottom of the home page. I thought that removing the special offers would take care of that, but I was wrong. Is there any way to get rid of it? I can ignore it on the Amazon site, but this has to go NOW!

Also, much as I hate to mute the HD, I'm going to have to put a matte screen protector on it. I have one on my original Fire - now in my husband's hands - and I can see major eyestrain in my future. I turned the light down, and I'll turn it down some more, but it may not solve the issue. Any suggestions as to brands? The one that sounds the best isn't out for the HD yet.

I think you get that whether you have SO's or not. . . . maybe bellaluna can say.. . . it seems to me it's related to what's showing on the carousel.

Oh. . .khrunner confirms that.

For the brightness, you can set it for 'auto'. . . .I've noticed it does change depending on whether the room is bright or dark.

I am so glad I bought this!  I love how little and light it is compared to my iPad.  I like retina display better for reading but this is way more comfortable to hold.  I'm really happy with this :D  I have just been playing with it and going from thing to thing rather than actually reading on it though haha

I'm really loving this new Kindle Fire, it might even eventually replace my iPad.  One thing I do need to figure out on it is how to get the Zinio app.  I followed the instructions that worked with the last Kindle Fire but it doesn't seem to be working on this new one.

Oh reading all of this makes me so excited for my Fire to get here! :)

Can I ask a silly question since this is my first Fire? Does it go to 'sleep' while you are reading if you have been inactive? That is one thing I love while reading in bed, I don't have to worry about not turning it off. :)

Yes and I think. . . .with the cover. . . .if you close the cover it goes to sleep.

One thing I have noticed.  If you have a bluetooth device connected. . . it will keep waking itself up. . .or the bt device wakes it up.  I found that when I'm done using it I need to turn OFF the bt keyboard so the Fire will stay asleep. . . . . not unlike a small child -- you must take away the toys to get them to rest. ::) ;D

Go to the 'manage your devices' section of 'manage your' kindle'.  You'll be able to do it there -- costs $15.

At least one game isn't working. . .at least. . .I've not found it in the 'cloud' which usually means it's not a compatible app. . . .the one I use a lot on my Fire is "Safe Trip or Not" and when I find it in the Appstore it doesn't list my HD7 as a compatible device.

Here's a FB app specifically for an HD Fire.  (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71XkOT1vwwL._SL160_.png) (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0094BB4TW/?tag=kbpst-20)

I'm still trying to figure out how to skype (never done it before ;)).  What i'd like to know is how to skype between 2 fire hd's.  From what I've been able to glean from many google searches is that I need to make a video call, but there doesnt seem to be that option avaialble in the skype app.  Also, having trouble with the Whyspersync when i read.  The page is so sensitive that even the slightest touch will turn it, then when I return to the page I was on, the recording automatically starts over at the top of the page.
A couple of other isues:
*  Does anyone else have a hard time finding the on/off switch?  It sits so flush with the surface that it's a bit hard to locate without taking a long close look
*  The hdmi out port is right next to the micro USB, not really an issue for me but for.my 80 year-old mother in law it (along with the on/off switch) are proving to be a problem

I'd suggest providing feedback . . . . .

If you don't mind, I'm going to split out the Skype questions to make it easier for others to find abd so we don't derail the first impressions thread....

Betsy

I was using the GSam Battery Monitor for Fire so I could check the battery percent quickly. It appears to not be compatible.  Also, art Authority, Asphalt 6, 7 Little Words, Aces Traffic Puzzle Pack, Doodle Jump, Peggle, Quell, The Lost City, Triple Town ( :(!).  I really hope they get some kind of update to be compatible.

On a side note, I noticed that IMDB is now not compatible with either device. Neither is Zinio.

If you go to the Appstore for Android, and scroll down, you can select in the left side to view only Fire HD compatible apps.  I see many of the recent FAOTD apps are HD compliant.

Also the FAotD from a few day sago, Battery HD, is compatible. (ah yes, the one Betsy linked to.)

Quell Reflect seems to be o.k. and there is an IBDb ap that's pre-installed, I believe.

Triple Town is, as I recall, an eInk kindle app and didn't work on the first Fire either.

This is the version of Triple Town I was talking about.  There is a Kindle Active Content version as well.  (And a Facebook version.)  Lol, in case you can't tell, I love this game.

ETA: I was posting at the same time as Dream Weaver.  That is the same version I was talking about.  It works on my original KFire, but sadly, not on the HD yet.

I downloaded an app and keep getting the 'look in the library' message too.  It's not in the library - or anywhere on my device near as I can tell.  I love the new Fire, but it is a little buggy.  Plus, the Marware case I purchased forces me to use the Fire upside down.  Not a big deal since most screens can reorient, but not all of them.  That has been the biggest annoyance so far, but it is more of a case issue than a fire issue.

There was one I went to download and got a message about it re-indexing the library or something. . .it said try again later.  And I did, and the app downloaded just fine.  I like that, when you're in the cloud view, there's a little check mark to let you know it's already on the device.

Also, FWIW, the FB app linked above, is essentially the mobile app. . . . .unlike on the previous fire where the FB link basically opened a web page.

I just checked the cloud apps again and it's there finally.  I purchased it last night, and it didn't appear anywhere on the Fire until today.  Hmmm...maybe things were backed up due to many receiving their new Fires yesterday.

Ok, if you use the web browser and go to the Dropbox website on the Fire, you can download the app.  I also sideloaded a Zinio app which seems to be working so far.

All in all, I am really liking this device.  It seems to be "zippier" than the first one.  :)

I am LOVING my new Fire!!  The screen is amazing, and it's definitely lighter and thinner than the old fire.  I will agree with what someone said above that the on/off button is hard to find.  I can't seem to find it by touch and have to be able to see it (hard in the dark).  However, I'm really thinking that I'm going to need the pink Amazon case when it comes out and having the auto sleep/wake will solve this problem just fine.  ;)  The Fire does fit nicely in my Vera Bradley ereader sleeve, so it is protected when not in use, but I really don't feel comfortable without a full-time cover on it!

There is also no light on the outside to show when the Fire is charging or fully charged.  Not a big deal, just different.  I did not order the charger, as I have a surge suppressor with built in USB ports for charging that I was going to use (and I also have several USB adapter chargers lying around as well).  This has charged the Fire fine and it seemed quick too (though I didn't time it).  I also like that the port for the charging cable is along the side instead of on the bottom -- it's much more out of the way if using the device plugged in.

I do have several apps that are not yet compatible with the new Fire.  All the Mumbojumbo games, for instance.  I'm guessing that's why they recently went down in price so much!  Luckily I already finished them on the old Fire -- but I was surprised not to see them on my app list in the cloud.  I also was going to get Empress of the Deep II as my first hidden object/adventure game for this new Fire, but it doesn't seem to be compatible either.  I'm sure they'll be updated soon, though.  Some of the Big Fish games I haven't played yet are compatible, so I'll just start with one of those. :)  Actually, one of them, Serpent of Isis (Full), shows "What's new in version 1.0.24 - Verified compatibility with the Kindle Fire HD" -- so apparently it's being worked on. ;D

Also, the whispersync for games doesn't really seem to be working right.  I see where a little syncing symbol (rotating arrow circle -- don't know what else to call it! :D) comes up at the end of each level.  However, although it sees the game achievements from the old Fire, it doesn't seem to see the completed levels.  One time on the old Fire, while trying to get this to work, I did get a message that I had progress on both Fires and it asked me which save I wanted to use.  However, this screen has never come up on the new Fire.  I think it probably has to do with the levels being completed before Game Circle was implemented.  I tried re-completing some later levels on the old Fire to see if that would get it to sync, but it didn't work.  Oh well, I will just enjoy redoing the levels on my new Fire -- it's like a brand-new game! ;D  Oh, this was tested on Where's My Perry? and Quell Reflect.

The web pages I've looked at look great on the new Fire -- really everything looks great, I just can't say enough about the new screen! ;D  I haven't tested video yet -- we're nearing the monthly limit on my 4G MiFi (I really hate that limit >:(), so I didn't want to download any video right now.

Oh, another new feature that I haven't seen mentioned -- when you hold the Fire in landscape view, the bottom navigation bar moves to the side (going down the side instead of across the bottom).  I really liked this -- felt it was easier to open the navigation bar and use it.  I also like the external volume control (though, like the on/off button, it is flush with the case and kind of hard to find by touch in the dark).

So all in all I'm really happy with my new Fire -- I feel like it's a great improvement on an already great device! ;D  Oh, and my husband is very jealous that my Fire is cooler than his. ::)

Those of you with the HD; have you found any of your existing apps that don't work with the HD?

MapQuest loads and runs for a few seconds, then crashes.

Got the  Kindle HD 7 and having this problem Carousel repopulates itself when items are "Removed from Carousel".

Items are only removed from the Carousel until the next time they are used?  Or are you saying they are showing up even thou you haven't used or opened the item?

My carousel is behaving as expected. . . .items show up if you open them.  You can remove from carousel and they go away until the next time you open them.

I have noticed that I've accidentally opened some apps I didn't mean to so of course they showed up on the carousel.

I hadn't exactly planned on getting the new Fire HD 7 but I did.  :)  Overall different feel from the old version.  The screen seems to be more responsive than previously, in some respects and a bit sluggish in others.  Need to make notes if I'm going to post on here.  I wanted it mainly for games and found that a lot of the games aren't available for the HD version.  As others have said, I'm sure the app developers are working overtime to roll out the new versions.  I LOVE to play Pogo games while sitting on the couch and the iPad just gets too danged heavy after a while.

Question...  have you noticed the back getting hot... warm... whatever?  It seems to be near the strip on the back.. whatever that is or is for.

Oh yeah, almost forgot.  About the bad*ss Battery Monitor.  I found the monitor works but it isn't the advanced version as I previously had AND the Icon app doesn't work at all.  Bummer!!  Hopefully that update will be done soon.

I love this but on the other hand, I'm feeling a bit dumb.

Oh, another question.  Have you found that the 5 minute Screen Timeout doesn't work?  I don't think it worked on my old Fire either.  The magnet in the case works great!!  So perhaps I should put it back to 5 minutes and turn it off by closing the cover.

Sorry for the rambling... just putting down random thoughts.  I bought the new Fire because my old one was really messing up... battery issues.. and was prepared to take this one as I found it.  So far, I'm finding it very good indeed.   ;D

I haven't noticed it being any warmer than any of my other android devices when being used.

I set my time out to 15 minutes and it does work.  Though I usually do end up sleeping it manually anyway.  Note that if you have a bluetooth device connected it won't sleep properly as it keeps wanting to talk to the bluetooth thing.

The original Fire isn't a year old yet. . .and has a 1 year warranty. . . you might want to contact Kindle CS and see what they'll do for you.  Probably replace it.

my carousel is repopulating too...hopefully someone can figure out how to fix that and my library is slower to load than my old fire, but i didn't have all 3700 books on the old one. i'm sure that makes a difference. those are the only complaints i have so far and they are minor compared to the improvements. i love the sound and the hd, so far i haven't played with the bluetooth, or many of my other apps but it's been fun.

I'm not even seeing that.  All I see, right now, that is... is Customers Also Bought.

The dumb question of the day - What do the screensavers look like in w/o SO?  I'm not finding them objectionable either... yet! :)

The 'print ad' on the home screen is now

The West Wing--available now
to Prime members at no additional cost.

At's at the bottom left of the screen. . .to the right is the favorites star.

The one or two sleep images I saw before offers downloaded were very similar to those on the original Fire.  Sort of artistic graphic images of arty/writing/bookish things -- pencils, typewriter keys, old cassette tapes, etc. . . . .in color.

I really gotta get me one of these babies!!  ;D

One question for all you lucky HD owners - does this display your library as a bookshelf with cover images? I don't mean the carousel, I mean if actually browsing your library of books.

Also, I presume you can sideload books like on the Kindle WiFi?

I assume this means we can still download "outside" apps on the HD (since Amazon's Zinio for Android still doesn't show as being compatible with the Fire)?   I've pre-ordered the 32GB and that was one of the things I had a little concern about - although it's also something that would be hard to walk back from now that they've established the precedent.

On the HD7 there is still the option to allow apps from 'unknown' sources.

I expect most apps that aren't already compatible with the HD will soon be updated to work. . . . .

I only ordered the HD7 because I didn't want to wait for the 8.9.  I figured I could play with it a while and then give it to the Boy. . . . . But I am REALLY liking it. . . . . .and I'm not entirely sure I'll like the larger form factor as well!  Ah well. . .the Boy will get something, no doubt. :D

I'm still not seeing this.  On the home screen, in portrait, I have the list of Shop, Games, Apps, etc. then under that the carousel and under that "Customers Also Bought" then under that is the Favorites Star but nothing on the left side.  That's strange because I think I remember seeing a very small text ad at some point.  Maybe before the Fire upgraded itself to the current version 7.1.5 .  In landscape mode, it's only the list, carousel and favorites star.

I posted two questions at the beginning of this thread. My first question was whether the new Fire was lighter than the old one, and it seems to be.

However, no one has really answered this yet...

- How is the sound on something like Netflix streaming or Amazon instant video? I found the original KF was never loud enough with those two apps (yet games and such were loud). The new speakers are supposed to be much better. Are they? I mean without headphones.

Thanks.

I think the Fire HD is slightly lighter than the original Fire.  Didn't feel dramatically different as far as the weight goes.  It is thinner depth wise  and wider (less rectangular) than the original Fire.  Also, the HD's bezel is wider which makes it easier to hold without interfering with whatever is on the screen.

I think the volume is fantastic for a small tablet.  Much better than my iPad.  I get so frustrated with the iPad's volume.  Don't see myself having that issue with Fire HD.  Hope that helps.

Yes, you would have to opt out of adds after you recieve it. The cost is $15.

No, it doesn't have a charger, but it does have a USB cable and you could use your computer to charge it. Or you can probably use one of the current chargers or buy the new charger... If you buy the charger along with the Fire it's only $10.00. If you have an iPad, the charger for that works just fine.

Let's try this a different way: The 7" HD costs $199 with ads, $214 without.

A charger, which is a very nice compact design, costs a net of $6.99 if you need one ($9.99 if purchased with a Fire, plus a $3.00 MP3 store credit until the end of the year).

Therefore, a 7" HD costs a grand total of $220.99 if you don't want ads and you need a charger. Free shipping if you have Prime, and currently no sales tax collected in most states.

Still a great deal in my opinion, especially when compared to the original Fire, which shipped 10 months ago at $199 (although it did include an irritating integrated power cord/plug with a too short cord).

I love my Kindle Fire HD! I owned the original Fire, and I loved that too, but this blows it away.

It feels lighter, the screen is very nice.

I bought a micro-HDMI cable, hooked it up to my TV, and it looks awesome! I love browsing the web on my TV (was very close to buying a set top box with the web on it... sticking with the Fire HD for now)... i love playing racing games on my Fire hooked up to the TV. I was able to watch youtube and vimeo videos online on my TV via the Fire HD. And, of course, the Amazon Prime videos, in HD, look awesome on my TV.

The battery life is great on it as well!

And the ads don't bug me at all, and $15 to remove them isn't too bad.

Here's a sentence from my Amazon review: The HD weighs 13.9 oz. vs. 12 oz. for the Nexus 7 (the original Fire weighed 14.6 oz.).

About the sound: So far, from everything I've tried (apps, video, music), the maximum sound volume is much higher. I haven't had to use the maximum volume for anything so far. With the original Fire, I often had to user earbuds or use an auxiliary powered speaker.

I got to meet Ann's Fire HD7... Very nice!  Picture is much better.  It seems a bit lighter.

There are more tabs along the top:

Games now have a separate tab, though they are also included under "Apps."  And there is a tab for "Photos."  And a personal video app.  So, I'm hoping accessing personal files like that will be easier using the new Fire?

Also, as for the ads, the lock screen ads were big magazine style ads.  I never saw an ad on the home page the whole time I was playing with it.  ???  Ann kept insisting there were two little lines of text at one point but they never showed up while we were playing with it.

Ann also showed me the envelope-style case that she had for the old Fire and how the new Fire fit in it.  The new Fire is a bit wider, and so it doesn't quite fit perfectly.  It would do in a pinch, but for long term, you want one that will fit better.

Afterwards, we looked for a HDMI to Micro HDMI adapter at Radio Shack, but that one didn't have one.  They did have a cable for $29.99, which made the one I found on Amazon look pretty good!

Here's another pic from my meetup with Ann.  Old Fire on the left, new Fire on the right:

The official width of the Fire HD is 7.6 x 5.4 x 0.4
and the classic Fire width is 7.44 x 4.72 x 0.45

but interestingly, the size of the viewable screen is a bit different proportionally.  The viewable screen on the old Fire is a bit taller and narrower than the new Fire, but the diagonal is the same.

As for appearance, showing the same article from the Washington Post with the same settings (except font size*), you can see the difference in the two screens.  On the left, "sepia" on the old Fire is very light.  On the right, the new Fire is a truer sepia color.  The screen seemed brighter in general at the same brightness level.

*to get the fonts similar, Ann had to choose one size larger font on the new Fire.  The original Fire was set at font size 3, I believe.  And one can't change the line spacing on the new Fire the way one could on the old Fire.

Betsy

Betsy's right about the fonts. . .it came up here somewhere else as well.  Pretty sure it's because of the higher pixel density but size 3 is definitely smaller on the HD than it is on the original.  I actually think both of those were size 3 -- I'm just double checking on the HD and when I switch to 4 the words wrap a bit differently.  It might be more obvious with a different typeface, too -- that's Caecilia.

As to screen size, I measured them as 3 9/16" x 6 1/16" for the original and 3 12/16" by 5 15/16" on the HD.  So the HD screen is very slightly wider and very slightly shorter for the same length diagonal.

Just got mine today. I had ordered it and then canceled, and then ordered again. :D

I like it. You can really tell the difference between screens, and it's noticeably faster on the web than my first Fire. Everything just works smoother.

I got the 7 inch size because of the portability- it fits in some of my purses better. Now, I just need a cover. I have it in a sleeve I picked up for $12 yesterday. It's okay, but I prefer covers to cases..

Mine should be here today, too.  I can't wait.  I'm getting frustrated.  I ordered it within the first 30 minutes of it giong up and ordered 1 day shipping....still no Fire :(

Come to think of it...I guess I did take that pic before you bumped the font up...

Oh my word, it's here and SO WORTH IT!  I am loving the new Fire HD.  I know it's bigger, but it feels smaller to me...maybe because it isn't so boxy?  I have the fuschia Amazon case and it's nice.

Question about opting out of ads:  will it take away the "Customers also bought" at the bottom of the Home screen?  (I already claimed one offer of $5 off in the video store....and downloaded a movie for an upcoming business trip....

Apparently, no, it won't take away the "also bought" row....

Ugg, I find them so ANNOYING!  I'll get used to it I guess. Maybe I find them more annoying because most of them are things that I already have "bought"....so it's not "smart" enough to realize that I've already bought it?

As I said in the other place you posted this question, note that, though for some content, the "also bought" row shows "also boughts," for some apps, it shows options within that app.

Well, everyone's mileage may vary, but speaking personally, I appreciate also-boughts.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say I've OneClicked more books I've checked out based on also-boughts than I have based on Amazon reviews. By a wide margin.  ;D

I love the also-boughts, as well. That's one of the most valuable things--it's helped me find alternatives and all kinds of books that I probably wouldn't have stumbled-upon in any other way. I LOVE the also-boughts.

I purchase a new fD Fire for my wife as a gift and it arrived yesterday...Only messed with it for a few hours BUt I like it a heck of a lot more then my original FIRE..especially the SOUND..

So far I sure miss the little gear icon on top..and I have not yet figured out how to get out of some apps BUT that will be her problem....(lol) I also miss the GREEN charging light..ALLOT !

Anyway I put a battery App on it and while the App  does work..t starts up with a message  that I DO NOT OWN the APP... (?????)   has a box that says to see details press here..but that does nothing..

Anyway my initial reaction is that the HD is VERY MUCH a better device then my original.. I may be trading my original Fire in for a HD...

I don't mind the "Also Boughts" on Ann's device  :D.  As I pointed out, there's useful information about your apps in there as well as the actual "also boughts."  However, I do think there's a difference between seeing "also boughts" when you go to a storefront and having them on your personal device, and can see why it would bother some.  I think that's a personal choice and what's right for one person isn't right for another.

I would encourage people to remember Amazon's 30 day return policy and see if you can live with the Also Boughts.  I didn't find them intrusive, and liked the "extras" for the focussed app, but that's me.

I'm one of the new Fire HD people who really doesn't like the Customers Also Bought piece on the home screen. I thought it should have gone away with the ads for the $15, and I wrote Amazon customer support about it. It's really the only thing I don't like about the new Fire.

This is part of the reply I received: Customer feedback like yours is important to us. We frequently receive requests for new features and I have forwarded your comments, expressing your desire to remove this feature on your kindle, to our Kindle development team, so that they can take notice of it, take them into consideration and most probably provide the option to remove this feature as an update in the near future.

So if you don't like the Customers Also Bought feature, you might want to let Amazon know. I'd like to see removing it as an option, since some folks like it and find it useful. I'd also like to see an option for keeping the favorites screen visible, but you can't have everything. :) I liked the way the carousel was set up on the original fire.

Yes. . .there's a pretty obvious Help and Feedback icon in Favorites and it's also available by dragging down from the top and taping 'more'.

When the Fire HD was announced I wasn't sure I was going to get one, after having some issues with my 1st Gen Fire I decided to go for it. Amazon replaced my original Fire, then I sold it to a friend & got the Fire HD.

I love the Bluetooth & the 16gb (2 of the main reasons I upgraded) & the camera (altho I haven't tried it yet). Better battery & screen are great too.

Some of the changes I'm not fond of are the "Customers also bought" Bar, I miss the favorites being under the carousel instead of the new star popup window. I really miss the charging light on the power button, don't like having to wake the Fire up to see if its done charging.

Last I really wish they would have added carousel settings that would allow you to tell it what NOT to auto add to it (like they did with websites). I don't use my Fire to read books & I really don't like the fact that when you buy it book it auto sends the book to all Fire carousels listed in your account. My roommate & I share an Amazon account & both have a Fire, but I read many more books then she does. We even tried turning Parental controls on the 1st Gen Fire, it blocked the books page & required a password to actually download a book but the cover still auto appeared in Carousel on the Fire even if I bought the book from my Kindle Touch. I hope Amazon adds this feature in a future software update or even in the new parental controls that are coming soon (I sent them my feedback).

Now I just have to wait for the Kindle Paperwhite to get here.

Good feedback, Dawn!  Glad you're enjoying your new Fire...  I love reading these posts, I'm living vicariously until I get my Fire 4G.

The "Customers Also Bought" isn't entirely without merit--if you move the focus to one of your apps, it will have options pertinent to that app.  Or, for subscriptions, a link to back issues.  Hope this will make you be less "not fond."  ;)

I agree that I'd like the charging light to still be there...surprised that its gone.  :-\

When I hold my KFHD in landscape mode (which is most of the time, except when reading a book), I don't see the also boughts.

I've been pleasantly surprised at the book reading experience on the fire HD.  I expected it to hurt my eyes, but so far it's been good in sepia with brightness dimmed down.  Have to dim it a lot more when reading in a dark room.  I don't read books on my ipad2.  Tried it and never got very far with it.  (I still love reading on e-ink readers, of course.)

The worst part is that the charging light is hardware and obviously can't be fixed by a software upgrade.

I received my Fire HD last Thursday.  I love it!  I had the original, just sold it so I could order the new one.  I love everything about this new model.  A major improvement is the sound quality. Movies play so much better, no buffering.  I finally signed up for Prime, very excited about movies and free 2 Day shipping.  I am waiting for my case, ordered a cheapo from RooCase.  I have had 3 from them and really like them.  They are inexpensive yet very nice, great colors.  I ordered an apple green slim case.  All in all, I am very impressed with the new HD. :-*

I have the original Fire and I have the new Fire HD on order.  I am wondering if its worth it or not to "move up to new and improved".  I use the original for watching movies/tv (Netflix/Hulu), playing a few games, night reading, and a little bit of surfing the web.

Those of you that had the original and moved up to the HD version is it worth it?

Thanks

If you use the original for movies and TV, I think you'll be even happier with the screen and sound quality on the new one. (That is, the HD model.)

And you can trade in the old one to Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics-tradein&field-keywords=Kindle  You can get up to about $83 for it which goes a long way toward recouping the cost of a new one.

Somewhere on these boards there was a question about the HDMI port. It appears that the port echos whatever is on the screen. Tried it with steaming video from Amazon - worked fine. Tried it with various apps and all worked fine, showing up on my flat screen TV. I even read a bit on the TV - an interesting experience.

First glitch requiring a reset.................Picked it up and the touch screen was not responding.  I held the power button for about 30 seconds and now it's kinda OK except that the on screen slider responds to my touch without sliding it.   It works but it's different.

I'm really loving this new Kindle Fire, it might even eventually replace my iPad.  One thing I do need to figure out on it is how to get the Zinio app.  I followed the instructions that worked with the last Kindle Fire but it doesn't seem to be working on this new one.

A 7-inch replacing a 10-inch? Maybe not.

However, Google is now confirmed to be working on a 10-inch Nexus, with Samsung providing the hardware, on a 10-inch Google Nexus 10 that will feature a display that is promised to be higher-resolution than the current iPad Retina display.

No word on price, but it is said to be "not a low-end device, not like the Nexus 7."

I got my wife the Kindle Fire HD 7" for her birthday. I recently published my own book and thought it would be neat to get one.

She likes it and is happy with it, but I have a few gripes.

-The system itself is pretty slow due to the android system being chocked by the Kindle overlay.

-They limit the picture/audio/video fromating. If they were more excepting and allow the thumbnails to be viewed like store bought items, I think it would be great.

-They also limited the apps. I understand that Amazon wants all the sells, but it is a bit annoying, especially if you have the apps purchased on Google Play already.

-No rear cam or even front camera app.

+ I do like the fast wifi and the overall setup (There are some snafu's I dont like though)

+The screen and speakers are great.

+It is nice and thin.

Overall, good tablet with a lot of potential if Amazon patches up some things.

To use the camera, try the directions here:

Still, it's a front-facing camera, so it's not going to be the best option for a camera for the most part.

I plan to keep my ipad v1 for reading magazines (the bigger screen is nice and some magazines have an "ipad enhanced" version not available on the Fire) but otherwise I find myself reaching for the 7" over the ipad.

(Lol, the Fire wants to auto correct ipad to Olaf- must remember to kill auto correct)

Thank you to all for adding to this post.  I received a Kindle Fire HD 7" today as a surprise gift, so I'm trying to get up to speed on all the greatness it has to offer!

the only question I have right now is:  Can I use the charger from my Kindle Keyboard to charge this unit?  Charging through USB from a laptop doesn't exactly thrill me, so if I can't use the white charger I use for the older Kindle, I'd better get a charger ordered.

thanks again ...

Yes. . . .it will be slower, but you can leave it plugged in overnight so you wouldn't really notice that.  It's probably marginally faster than via a laptop or other computer.  The other thing about a laptop -- it may not keep charging it when the laptop has gone to sleep and definitely won't if the laptop itself is operating on battery power.

The PowerFast that Amazon sells will be faster.

Love it so far!
