Title: Holy cow! Now THAT is a sinkhole!!!
Post by: 911jason on June 02, 2010, 04:53:44 am
Maybe some of our resident authors can base a story on this...

A cavernous and almost perfectly round sinkhole swallowed an entire intersection in Guatemala City during a tropical storm. The hole is 66 feet across and plunges nearly 100 feet down. Geologists said that the circular shape suggested a cave formation underneath, but what exactly caused the sinkhole was still a mystery...

We have had a lot of small sinkholes here in the Maryland area.
you know - can swallow a pickup truck and even one up by Frederick that could have swallowed a 16-wheeler.
But 66 feet across - wow.

I hope they publish the answer when they find out how it happened.

Just sayin.....

I think the most amazing thing about this event was that it swallowed a "3 story building" and there is not a sign of it in that picture.  I think that it has to be deeper than 100 feet, the news yesterday said that they don't know how deep it is.

Here is more of the story:

"The sinkhole formed Saturday and gulped down a clothing factory about three miles from the site of a similar sinkhole three years ago. Neighbours said a weekend security guard was spared because he had left to tend to his house, which flooded from heavy rain as Tropical Storm Agatha bore down on Central America. The storm has killed at least 179 people"

Can you imagine if it happened during a normal business day.  Who knows what the casualties would have been.  And that security guard probably is thinking it was his lucky day.

Guatemala sure didn't get spared anything, right before the storm hit, their volcano erupted, about 40 minutes away from the city.

If this isn't fodder for conspiracy theorists, I don't know what is!

That picture almost looks like those artist's sidewalk chalk drawings! So big it's almost unbelievable.

That is horrible.  The whole area around it looks like it's been decimated too.  I wonder why there hasn't been more in the news, although I see from this thread that CNN had it.  Must have been buried in the newspapers if it was covered at all.

That is so weird, cuz it's such a clean, perfectly shaped hole. I've seen a lot of sinkhole pics, but none ever looked like that. It looks like it was drilled with a very large bit.

If you think the bit would be big... what about the drill?! ;D

The Washington Post carried it in both the Morning edition and the Express Edition (for the Metro).
And Fox 5 News - local DC Fox affiliate had it on the 10pm news.
So we got a good coverage of it here.

Just sayin......

If you guys haven't seen The Boston Globe's Big Picture Blog, you should check it out, they have amazing photography. It's kind of like the modern day internet version of LIFE Magazine.

This image comes from http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/06/a_rough_week_for_guatemala.html

A friend of mine posted that on facebook the day it happened and my first reaction was that this was obviously fake!  It's really mind-boggling that something like that could happen.  I mean, the Earth quite literally opened up!

It looks so improbable that I almost expect to see an accompanying photo showing the UFO that launched out of there.

I honestly thought that the picture was photoshopped when I first saw it. I hadn't caught it on the news, and thought it was a joke. That is just unreal!
